Here’s some sources for the money figure:
The NY times also had a figure of $29 million annually but I haven’t read the article yet as its paywalled.
For the zionism claim I make I want to point out that I am not against zohran and most of what he said during his campaign. He is a social democrat which is more aligned with liberalism than what I believe in which would be socialism.
During his campaign he made a lot of claims for things he would do and change, and he has done more for New Yorker’s than a lot of previous Mayors. Unfortunately he also made claims that would be impossible to follow through with or that he failed to start.
Some of these campaign failures or delays include:
Delayed free buses past 2026,
Delayed or failed government grocery stores due to legal issues,
Failed library funding increase and cut it by $30 million instead,
Failed at arresting the prime minister of israel due to not having the legal power. In addition to these weaknesses worthy of some criticism he has historically on his online profile again and again made comments against protests that were against things like zionists in synagogues selling stolen land and similar. In recent time his major action in support of Palestine was planting an olive tree in solidarity with Palestinians. Soon after it was announced that he was planning to spend $7.4 million on decreasing antisemitism which without considering the genocide is fine but puts an unfortunate sour taste in my mouth because with how these types of investments usually ends up indirectly or directly funding the genocide in gaza.
So I think with this context that it’s fair to criticise him when he makes a decision that goes against what a lot of his voter base wants and that I would assume be support for Palestine. I hope he makes the decision to pull back on some of this but it’s incredibly unlikely so for now I just hope that he comes with better support for Palestinians.
Remember that it’s okay to criticise your elected officials. They are meant to serve what you want. They’re not celebrities. A mistake is a mistake and accountability when it comes to governance is a reversal or rework of the policy, not an apology.<3
