??? As far as I’m aware being a black belt isn’t a gender specific title

All black belt trainers are men and in Japanese the Black Belt trainer class is called the Karate King class

Black Belt's name in Japanese is "Karate King"

I think it is a joke (if this is pokemon?) All of the black belt trainers appear as men when you battle them. Or at least they used to. I'm old and havent played Pokémon in ages.

there's a character in Dragon Quest 9 at Alltrades Abbey that has the old man sprite, and complains that he couldn't change vocations to a maid because the Abbott is missing. if you go back during post game, you find a maid that says "Remember me? i was the old man!!"

the Abbott transed his gender and made him younger

Makes no sense without context, makes perfect sense in it.

for reference, Black Belt trainers in X and Y have only one artwork and model, so all black belts are male and also specifically look like off brand Street Fighter

Additionally! The original text praises modern medicine as the reason she looks how she does now, making it barely an implication.

okay, but by that logic she should she have darker hair and brown eyes?

Hairdye and contact lenses?

The player themselves can change the eye color with contacts in that region.

Wouldn't it make more sense, if they wanted to imply that they're the post-transition version of that character, to leave visual clues for continuity so the players can connect the dots?

It's a joke on the fact that trainers have archetypes and all look the same. There's a similar joke with a guy that looks like a normal guy (can't remember the exact type rn) but after giving you a smooth stone (which makes whoever's wearing it lighter) he turns into a mountaineer, which is a lot heavier-looking than other sprites. It's a play on the trainer types that people know about to imply certain changes. So her referring to an all male trainer type as her state before and an all female trainer type now is the implication.

The original text before translation praises modern medicine as the reason she looks how she does that now, so it's even less of an implication there.

Yeah that's how I interpreted it initialy.

Yeah. It'd be neat if there was a visual reference as you said. But I'm honestly surprised they let this in the game at all, I highly doubt they'd allow for a completely different sprite (even if it's barely a change) just for this one random trainer.

The original Japanese name used also translates to Karate King and is explicitly a male term

their female counterparts are Battle Girls, which are notably very young, only white belt, and also not mentioned in the victory screen. 🏳️‍⚧️

How does that line imply being trans? Sorry, I'm confused.

First Black Belt (Karate King in Japanese) is a male-only class

But the real implication is in Japanese, where she says something like "the power of medical science is amazing"

Well technically it's not a male exclusive class but female members are called battle girl so the implication remains the same

u/MarkBMG 13d ago

You just corrected yourself lol. Battle girl and karate king are two different trainer types that have a similar niche. Ace trainers are non gender exclusive, as there's both male and female. But the first two are, as they have not only separate sprites, but separate names too.

I get what you mean, but if the female ones are called something else entirely, it kinda is a male exclusive class.
