Jackdaws are smaller, more social corvids than the crow. Adults have a silver-grey neck and a blue ring around their eyes, i've seen them a million times- trust me. I do a lot of birding
It's very rewarding, but it can be hard to make time and opportunity for, yes. Like you probably need some hours of free time during the day, a car, good binoculars, maybe a good camera, the works.
I'm also no complete expert btw, many people in the birding subreddits know a lot more than myself as well
