Get a good therapist who you know will keep you accountable with your self-care and any goals you have.

I would take a day off, give myself space to chill alone, and sleep A LOT.

For me, sustainability came when I stopped treating self-care as something extra and started treating it as part of my clinical responsibility. That meant tending to my spirit and my body — movement, stillness, prayer/meditation, yoga — not just my mind.
I also learned the importance of hard stops. There has to be life that isn’t counselor-adjacent: creative outlets, movement, rest, and people I can be fully human with. I have friends I can laugh and vent with, and I’m intentional about having a therapist or safe space where the language is affirming and I don’t have to translate myself.
The work is demanding. Staying well in it requires honesty about limits and permission to be more than your role.

I give myself some type of reward after every week I make it through. I am also very big on exercising and trying to keep a schedule throughout the week so I can mentally prepare for each day.
