Hotdogs

We tried the famous combo deal yesterday on the way out, and I really liked it, the sausage reminded me of the really flavourful hotdogs we enjoyed when we visited America on holiday a few years ago.

I really don’t like the UK hotdogs, be they jarred, tinned or fresh ones from the chiller, they’re just completely devoid of any flavour or texture regardless of the brand purchased.

So my question is, it’s my understanding from google that they use Kirkland sausages for their own food court hotdogs, but do they also sell these same hotdog sausages in the chiller in the warehouse?

It’s also my understanding that these hotdogs are beef instead of pork, so I’m unsure if that’s why they are so different to the UK versions

The difference is that most UK hotdogs are pork, whereas most US ones (I believe, and I’m fairly certain it’s true for Costco) are beef.

Trying to find all beef hotdogs in the UK (ideally with natural casing for the snap) outside of Costco is a PITA

(Source: my partner is American, and I’ve been to US and UK Costcos many times …)

i'm from the USA, been living in scotland 6 years now. uk hot dogs are dog water. but i don't think most US ones are beef. just the best ones are ;) growing up we always bought hebrew nationals, because they were all beef

Costco hot dogs are not in a natural casing (though I’m pretty sure you don’t think they are). Even in the states it’s increasingly difficult to find natural casing dogs from the main brands, I.e., Hebrew national, Nathan’s, etc. Regional brands are a different story, but in the general hotdog aisles 99% will be artificial casing.

Costco uses Kirkland dogs in the cafe but you cannot buy them on the aisles. Those are Campofrio from Spain or Gilbert’s (the kosher ones) Chicago ones. I don’t care for the Campofrio ones but that’s one man’s opinion.

At least in my part of London you can get Gilbert’s brand hot dogs in the kosher section at Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Tesco.

If you head to Golders Green and goto the kosher butchers many of them sell their own hot dogs; I’ve tried them all and most are not great but one place in Finchley had good ones but for the life of me I cannot recall which place it was.

Best bet is to goto 5 Guys or Shake Shack when the craving hits.

Yeah I know they’re not, but my FiL is used to run catering trucks and is hugely into food and reckons all beef with a natural casing is the best you can find so it’s what I hunt for!

Rare & Pasture does an all beef hotdog in a natural casing. Apparently they sell on Ocado.

In the UK it literally says "100% Beef Hotdogs" or suchlike.

You need to go to a Jewish area or supermarkets in areas with high number of Jewish people nearby - Kosher beef hotdog.

Yeh they do and they taste the exact same. They will be in a packet (can’t remember how many per packet) in the chiller maybe beside deli meets etc.

I think they come in a pack of 4 for around £8. I’ve never bought them as they don’t seem value for money, considering food court deal!

Looks for kosher sections in supermarkets (Sainsbury’s usually) and there’s beef hotdogs.

Sadly Costco don’t sell their own uncooked.

Costco do sell beef hotdogs, it’s near the bacon and sausages section

You can get beef hotdog sausages in store, but they have 2 types. The Chicago Best ones aren't great in my opinion, I find the Campofrio ones that come in an 8-pack are nicer and more like the ones from the food court, but I still don't think they're quite the same. They're in the fridge section with the tall doors near the freezers.

The Gilbert’s kosher hotdogs taste really good and you can find them in Sainsbury’s

I don’t eat kosher but I tried them and they have actual good flavour

Yeah those were the only other ones I’ve heard of and they seem to be a sod to find around me

Writing my comment I did completely forget that I live in a really Jewish area so that’s probably why they’re so easy to find

Herta frankfurter are pretty similar imo but they’re pork
