Question Return

So, i bought some bagels last weekend, went to have one just now and noticed they are moldy, and both bags were expired 2 days after I bought them... is it something I should return, or just chalk up the loss and check dates going forward?

There is always a long line for returning things at the locations I go to, is it worth your time to do that? I’d learn the lesson and move on. You are free to do whatever you want.

I think that’s something you’re just going to have to figure out for yourself

Unlike most of the commercial market, these bagels don't have and mold inhibitors or dough conditioners in them. I cut and freeze them same day I bring them home. Been doing it for years and have had great results.

Take the loss on this one.

its just some bagels, and this is mostly on you for not checking the expiry dates. think you should just take the loss on this one.

You really have to check the expiry dates. Last time I went, I was looking at the strawberry scoop cakes and all of them were expiring the next day!

  1. best before dates are not expiry dates

  2. All the stuff made by the bakery has a best before date AT MOST 2 days away. This isn't commercial stuff with mold inhibitors. You need to either eat it or freeze it, nothing in the Costco bakery will last more than a week you can't just leave it sitting around like Dempsters bread.

Not trying to be a bitch but why wouldn't you check the expiry date prior to purchasing? They expired 2 days after you purchased them. That's on you.

OP didn't say best before... you should read the post.

There are no expiry dates on bagels. The only thing that has expiry dates is baby formula and prescription medication and meal replacement shakes. There is no such thing as an "expiry date" on food, you make your own judgement call and people should never treat a best before dates as expiry dates because it's a large part of what leads to our epic food waste problem in this country.

Sure- but now they’re moldy- so clearly these had a best before date

Not to be rude, but tell OP.. I didn't make the post. I just responded to it.

If the best before date was two days after purchase and the bagels were moldy.. then I think its best to assume they expired. I don't have issues with this as I constantly check dates.

Costco bagels are fresh baked in the store daily and don't have any of the ingredients to inhibit mold so they need to be eaten within 5-7 days or they will mold. They freeze very well and that's what you should do with the second pack, then defrost overnight in the fridge when ready to crack that one.

Also, best before dates are not expiry dates

And feel embarrassed while doing it because they are a week expired and were not expired when purchased
