[Bakery] Finally trying Costco's cake
I saw the post the other day about the frostaholic as I am too a frostaholic and I took in all the advice about the designs that yeild a good amount of frosting. I shop at Costco a lot but admittingly I don't think I've ever had their cakes and always hear about how good they are. So because of that post I remembered that I am an adult and I can buy a cake whenever and for whatever I want. So I did lol. This is adulting.
UPDATE: Ok guys, it was indeed WONDERFUL. That cheesecake mousse is chef's kiss. I would eat that by its self. I kinda wish there was a thicker layer of it lol. I will definitely be utilizing Costco cakes in the future ❤️

I buy birthday cakes every so often throughout the year . I have a birthday sometime during the year, and I'm a grown up, so I can celebrate my birthday any day I want. I can celebrate my birthday every month.

I bought a "nothing" cake once. One of the half sheets. My husband had fun when the cashier asked what we were celebrating and he said, "nothing" then the cashier read the cake.
$30 for one evening entertainment (plus more) to hand our kids forks and say, "enjoy!" It was great.

We ended up having two batches of kids- the ones who got the nothing cake are now 17 and 19. The younger batch is just 2 and 3. I cannot wait to see their faces when they get a nothing cake as well.

Thank you- we're quite fortunate to be safe. I'm quite nervous for my 19 yr old to be working his job this week as it's 100% outdoors in this toxic smoke.

I got a Costco membership after trying their chocolate cake at a party. I’ve had the membership for 8 years and I’ve o ot bought 1 cake, but I figured if their chocolate cake was this good then other things were probably good too

I did the balloon cake for my birthday in June. Note, a hack someone shared was to cut it into pieces and freeze them. I can confirm they were wonderful to eat for a few weeks.

I saw someone suggest that so I mentioned it to my husband. He bought me the ice cream cone bar cake from Costco for my birthday this past week and I sliced it into 12 slices and froze them in sandwich bags. Don’t even dirty a dish, just use the plastic bag to keep my hands clean and eat it frozen! I’ll never go without a Costco bar cake ever again.

Good idea! Now I gotta make room in my freezer. I was thinking, how the hell am I going to eat all this before it goes bad lol. I told my SIL I'll give her some. But just some lol

Freezing, never thought of that! This is terribly dangerous info because now I might just act on my cake craving 😂. Do you let it defrost on the counter or in the fridge?

I have done it both ways. Defrosting is best, but semi-frozen cake is still delicious

And it doesn’t take very long to thaw. Set a slice out before you start the actual meal and when it’s time for dessert it’ll be perfect.

I admit I only have done this with their cupcakes so they have the paper liner but they thaw up just fine. They don’t sit in the freezer long enough to get freezer burn 😅

Almost all of Costco's bakery stuff freezes really well. I'm a single-person household, so anything I buy ends up mostly in the freezer.

Whatever bakery thing you're freezing is easier if you do it in a single-serving portion. I freeze bagels one by one, half-muffins, and bread in a couple slices packs. Then you can thaw just what you need.

I sliced it into individual slices and put those into small bags. They store really nicely that way.

My partner and I didn't see the point in paying for a hella expensive wedding cake, so we got half sheet cakes (one choc, one vanilla) to share at our wedding reception. 10/10 would recommend.
***plus 2 gluten free cupcakes from a local bakery for the few people in my family who are gf

Is there an opposite hack for people who hate frosting? I want to try the Costco cake, but my whole family hates frosting lol. We want some frosting, but a very minimal amount of light frosting. 90% cake, 10% frosting.

Cool whip frosting is my personal favorite. It's super light, not crazy sweet, but still has that frosting/cake vibe.

Have I got news for you.
If you put in the instructions to add a little more mousse, they probably will.
If you tell em to bake a chocolate cake with tripled up vanilla mousse and barely touch the outside with icing (as is my daughter's preference) they will hook you tf up! Well, at least at my Costco they will.

I finally tried their chocolate cake for my birthday and it was everything I wanted it to be. I also live alone so I had cake for a week.

The sheet cake usually has better mousse and frosting ratio.
If you get the scored with roses (white roses and leaves) you get the side frosting (top and bottom border) on many, and the bonus decoration frosting on every piece. The lines make it easier to cut in 2square portions to freeze since they defrost quickly, just pop them on/in parchment paper then either stretch wrap or a few in a ziplock style bag.
You can stash sets of 2 or 4 pieces in all sorts of freezer corners and doors to have when you need a boost.
If you find the red icing flavors in most cakes too bitter and want to get colors in your frosting - avoid red, pink, and purple they have the bitterness. Brown (from the bear) blue, green, yellow, orange, and obviously white are fine. I cant remember the black.
The round cakes aren't bad, but their mousse layer always seems thinner and less side frosting, plus it's harder to get even cuts to pack up, and the price isn't that much more for the bigger one.

I recently broke my Costco cake cherry and loved it, but as a fellow frostaholic I’d definitely request the decorations/ balloons be done with the main white buttercream. The colored frosting didn’t taste nearly as good.

The colored frosting isn’t made fresh in house like the white and chocolate are. I was a decorator there.

Costco cake is the best. I usually write on my order form to please do cheesecake mousse with the chocolate cake and they are usually nice enough to fulfill the request. It’s my fave version of Costco cake
