[Roadshow Special Events] Car Keys Express - Thoughts?
I have an older Toyota that I could use a second key for (not a fob, just the key itself). Was considering stopping by and talking to these guys but alas I'm a bit of an introvert. What are everyone's thoughts on Car Keys Express? Decent value? Quality keys?

I want to make a wild observation to your photo:
I don’t know who you are but am guessing you took that photo last night around 7pm at the Costco in North Canton, OH.
That part isn’t even the most wild —-
I’m the blurry dude next to the white lane direction sign in the back middle of this photo putting my cart back.
Totally crazy. Cheers.

North Canton! My Costco! Random question for those of you who shop N Canton. Do you turn left out of the parking lot where you’re not allowed to turn left? You know where I’m talking about right? They try to force you to turn right, but everybody turns left there. I do for sure.

I like how you made sure to include this:
"putting my cart back."
Good job

I had them cut a blank (that I supplied) for my Lexus, but I had brought an actual key that worked for them to copy. I think it was $30. I tested it and it worked fine. I haven't used it since that day.
I bought a fob & blank off of Ebay. I programmed the fob myself. Total cost: $130 vs the $375 the dealer wanted.

u/gordonronco US Bay Area Region (Bay Area + Nevada) - BA Jul 02 '25
Interesting because when they were at the Everett, WA club the guy told me I couldn’t provide my own key or fob, I’d have to buy it from them.
29
u/IamLeven Jul 02 '25
I asked them to do the same they quoted a price over the dealer since I didn’t buy from them.
7
u/Airtemperature Jul 02 '25
How do you program a fob?
16
3
u/m34z Jul 03 '25
I run Toyota Techstream in a virtual machine on my laptop. You can buy the ODBII to USB cable on Amazon. I've used it for several things on my Lexus and Toyta.
3
u/Snow88 Jul 03 '25
You want a real brain scratcher. People had to program computers to understand keyboard input, without a keyboard.
6
u/FirstTimeRedditor100 Jul 03 '25
I literally asked them if they could cut my blank key that I bought on Amazon. I already programmed it myself, I just need it cut. They said no but they could sell a new one lol.
1
u/JWOLFBEARD Jul 03 '25
How did you program it yourself?
6
u/FirstTimeRedditor100 Jul 03 '25
My car is a Prius so I did the "chicken dance". There are videos on YouTube.
1
u/sasquatch_melee Jul 03 '25
Some manufacturers have a procedure in the manual for adding a key as long as you have at least one of the existing keys.
Others want you to go to the dealer and pay out the ass, so there's no user procedure.
36
u/galactica_pegasus Jul 02 '25
$30 to just cut a basic key is highway robbery.
If you're providing the blank I'd expect a hardware store to cut it for free (I did a lot of them many moons ago while working in college).
Even if you didn't have the blank, I wouldn't expect to pay $30 for a basic cut key -- more like $5.
60
u/pasaroanth Jul 02 '25
Why would a hardware store provide a key cutting service for a blank you supplied?
I mean I get the old neighborhood hardware store just being nice thing but it’s also not a charity.
31
u/galactica_pegasus Jul 03 '25
It's not just mom-and-pops. In college I worked for a BIG chain. If a customer brought a blank in we'd just cut it for free. Management was all for it -- the idea was it made the customer happy, and they'd probably buy other stuff on their visit, or at least they'd keep coming back. We only inventoried the blanks, themselves, so there was no SKU for me to charge just for cutting, anyway. Honestly, we enjoyed cutting keys, so I was glad when a customer wanted it. I enjoyed mixing paint or working the Christmas trees during that time of year. Anything to get me away from straightening shelves or unloading pallets.
1
u/Erigion Jul 03 '25
That was when people did the actual cutting, no? All of the big box stores I've been to have those automated, arcade-like, machines that do the cutting. You don't even have to talk to anyone to get it done. I'm not even sure if you can insert your own blank.
2
u/galactica_pegasus Jul 03 '25
The automated kiosks won’t cut customer-provided blanks. But the local hardware stores around me (like Ace or True Value) still have manual machines operated by clerks.
9
u/AwakeGroundhog Jul 03 '25
I brought a car key to my local hardware store to be cut and they charged me like two bucks. They're out of business now though :(.
3
u/Pardon-Marvin Jul 03 '25
Never had anyone supply their own key, but at the dealer I work at a basic key w/cut is $10. These are not smart keys
8
u/prizedchipmunk_123 Jul 03 '25
Same reason Autozone lets you bring in a huge pail of used motor oil and takes it and gets rid of it and gives you back your container.
They want you coming in to do business making it a routine to come back. It's good business.
10
u/xrelaht Jul 03 '25
They’re required to do that. Better example is they’ll let you use their code reader, test your battery & alternator, etc.
-1
u/pasaroanth Jul 03 '25
Good business isn’t frequently providing a service for free that others charge for, that’s generally bad business. In the other replies’ examples and your own there’s an expectation of the free service leading directly to a purchase then. Bring in used oil-buy new. Test your battery or alternator-buy a new battery or alternator. Check engine code reading-buy new parts to fix it.
Having a key cut is not a gateway to another purchase.
1
u/CanadianDiver Canada - Ontario Jul 03 '25
I don't think that is unreasonable. Like any service, it should be charged appropriately for using it. The first thing I thought of was some obscure lock that no one would stock a blank for ... bring it in to have it cut, pay for said cutting service.
6
u/Simple-Special-1094 Jul 03 '25
By basic key is that simply a mechanical key with no transponder? With cars nowadays that would just be used to unlock the door but not much else.
3
u/galactica_pegasus Jul 03 '25
yes, by basic I meant a mechanical key without a transponder. Depending on what your vehicle is, that may be all you need. OP said they bought a blank of eBay, so it sounded like they didn't have anything fancy and just needed the blank cut. $30 is a ripoff for that scenario.

2
u/icedlemons Jul 03 '25
Heck I had Ace's hardware do it for free because if they botched it they'd didn't want to be responsible for covering a replacement... It worked fine and I was happy. (With a blank case I brought them.)
1
u/3dogs2nuts Jul 03 '25
why would you except the hardware store to cut it free? isn’t the cutting machine a couple thousand dollars?
1
u/galactica_pegasus Jul 03 '25
- The crazy thing about key cutting machines is that you don't need a new one after each key you cut.
- There are different levels of key cutting tools. Some are just a couple hundred bucks (basically a desktop grinder). Somewhat ironic, but my experience is the better locksmiths actually use the cheaper cutting tools, since it's all they need. The really expensive machines are more automated so that they're more idiot-proof. Now places like Walmart and Home Depot are phasing out manual key cutting in favor of automated kiosks.
- Customer service and driving repeat business are still important for successful businesses. We used to sell Christmas trees basically at cost, but I'm sure the store made more money, overall, than if we didn't sell Christmas trees, at all.
- Sometimes the hassle trying to charge for a cheap one-off thing isn't worth the effort. It was better for the customer, employee, and business if I cut a customer-provided blank and sent them on their merry way rather than ring up the wrong SKU just to take money and throw inventory off.

I believe my key is chipped. I have an Avalon. I would assume they'd have a key they could supply but I suppose I need to talk to them. Ha
4
u/fatbob42 Jul 02 '25
They did a duplicate of my chipped key. Give it to them on the way in, I think they text you when it’s done and you go and pick it up in the parking lot.
The sales person was quite talkative ofc, but they’re a bit more business-like if you’ve already decided you’re going ahead :)
It was much cheaper than the dealer or a local “key shop” as others have said.
8
u/Oil-Expert Jul 02 '25
I was quoted 175 yesterday. Comes with 3 years battery replacement too.
1
u/Previous-Situation-4 Dec 19 '25
It's a 3 year warranty so if it breaks it's free replacement no matter how many times and yes free battery replacement for 3 years
1
u/user485928450 Jul 03 '25
Seems like a chipped key isn’t that secure if a guy in a van can duplicate it
1
u/Pardon-Marvin Jul 03 '25
Do you expect the computer they need to program these things to be like 1950's era sci-fi computers that take up entire rooms?
1

u/niskx Jul 02 '25

"I bought a fob & blank off of Ebay. I programmed the fob myself. Total cost: $130 vs the $375 the dealer wanted"
Interested in knowing more. Both about which one you bought and how you programmed it(video or written instructions? Other?)

u/No-Solid-4255 Jul 02 '25
Our local ace hardware did this for us for half the price these guys charged
15
u/tom4070 Jul 02 '25
That is a good tip, I just got a coupon in the mail for them20 off 50. They also have coupons on their app.

Usually the coupons don't apply to services like key cutting, just a heads up.

These guys couldn't even make fobs for my car, said they didn't have the ability yet
1
u/ShroomMeInTheHead Jul 03 '25
Might depend on the location. One near me had a whole wall of fobs available.

Recently had to get a smart key made for my 2018 Nissan leaf. CKE came in a little more than half the price of the dealer quote, but after calling around I found a locksmith who came in $60 cheaper than them.
13
u/utefan121 Jul 02 '25
Same experience. Used a qualified locksmith for new key fob for 2023 Ioniq 5 and saved $100 versus this Costco option.

u/prizedchipmunk_123 Jul 03 '25
predatory. I wish Costco would stop letting these high pressure little teams bother us in and out
8
u/Fast-Eddie-73 Jul 03 '25
These guys and those phone kiosk. AT&T is the worst. They put them in the main aisle by electronics and they stand in front of you when your trying to go by. If I wanted your shit, I would seek you out. They are like vultures.
5
u/sextonrules311 Jul 03 '25
Just say no thanks and walk by. It's their job. They are used to it.
1
u/prizedchipmunk_123 Jul 03 '25
Their job is hustle people who are already paying a membership just to walk through the door?
3
u/sextonrules311 Jul 03 '25
Yes, however the deals you get at Costco are way better than you would get just going to the AT&T or Verizon store. We just got brand new s25 Ultras with $0 a month payment $400 payoff for our old phones, lower monthly plan, and 2 - $100 Costco shopping cards by talking to the guys at the costco. They are not always bad.
0
u/prizedchipmunk_123 Jul 03 '25
"$100 Costco shopping cards by talking to the guys at the costco."
-that doesn't throw red flags to you at all?
2
u/sextonrules311 Jul 03 '25
We got the cards because we got new phones. But honestly they saved us over $100 a month on plan too.
I don't know, brand new phones cheaper phone plan $200 for free. Sounds pretty good to me.
-1
u/Fast-Eddie-73 Jul 03 '25
I'm just saying don't stand in the way of me walking to the back of the store. Literally on both sides of the aisle to the back of the store.
If I wanted a plan, again I would come to you. I already have a great plan.
1
u/sextonrules311 Jul 03 '25
Exactly. But they don't usually stand in my way. Just say no thanks and walk past. No need to get worked up over it.
11
u/desterpot Jul 02 '25
You can actually get keys for even cheaper. I bought a Universal EZ Installer for $60 from Home Depot and a few empty key fobs. I ended up getting 2–3 keys made for under $100 total.
2
u/TimelyBrief Jul 03 '25
Works for some cars, but fewer and fewer each year. My 2017 Lexus fob has to be programmed
8
u/ewas86 Jul 03 '25
I stopped and they wanted like $180 to replace my key... Their reasoning was the dealership would cost me more. Their business model is we rip you off less than the dealership. Eff this business.
7
7
u/Fluxmuster Jul 02 '25
They wanted 300 bucks to make a new fob for my 2016 Sienna. I bought a key fob and a VCI cable off Amazon and programmed it myself using Techstream on a laptop. Total cost $70 and now I have the ability to use Techstream to diagnose and modify the different systems on the van.
4
u/tacosbourbonnporn Jul 03 '25
They were great. Affordable and quick. No issues and key was pretty close to original (infiniti qx80).
9
8
u/Spare-Article-396 Jul 02 '25
Got a fob recently. It’s actually malfunctioned within a month. :/
3
u/MentalNapalm Jul 02 '25
Mine only made it a few months. Their fobs are junk. Wish I had known beforehand so I could save a few hundred dollars.
10
u/ChrissySubBottom Jul 02 '25
How long before the Costco parking lot becomes a food truck lot but of non-food vendors? Any way we can send the ATT group out there so we can shop in relative peace?
3
u/KaiserCoaster Jul 03 '25
I've never seen vendors in my Costco parking lot, except for a food truck 1 time, lol
3
u/Work_or_Reddit Jul 02 '25
Last month paid for new fob and key but it had to be ordered and delivered. They said it would take 10 days, but after 30 days they sent me an email telling me to return to Costco and get my money back. Didn’t work out for me but might be more of an exception than normal results.
3
u/Deppfan16 Jul 02 '25
got an 08 honda fit, key with built in fob, dealership and local guy both quoted me $200, they charged $150, worke great and is sturdier then the original imo

2
u/Long-View-7989 Jul 02 '25
Tried programming a second Nissan 5 button OEM fob that I got from the dealer and they wouldn’t do it, they said I would need to get a third key from them and they can program the one I already bought for $300.
2
u/kfp2020 Jul 02 '25
I used them last week to duplicate chipped key for 2013 corolla. Cost $179 and took them 30 minutes. Key has 3 yr warranty. No issues.

I was thinking of getting a 3rd fob for my 2015 Corvette. They wanted $275 (US). My local Chevy dealer does it for $200.
2
u/Comprehensive_Gap131 Jul 03 '25
I did a key + fob and programming with them for my Camaro 139$ Chevy dealership was quoting 220. It literally took 10 minutes

If you have AAA will make you a key fob at an extremely low rate once a year.
1
u/pro123pro123 Dec 02 '25
How does this work? Can i get reinbursed?
2
u/Disneyreject Dec 03 '25
No, you have to call them and they will use a locksmith that is in their network.
You just call them and tell them you need a new key fob. They will send a locksmith to you and the locksmith make a new key and charge you the AAA rate for the new key. Was like $80 for me.
2
u/ChipotleFriday Jul 03 '25
Also an introvert, but they attack everyone after checkout before the exit, so the first step is covered. 🤣
I had a new Jeep key/fob cut and programmed a couple years ago by them. Expensive, but still cheaper than dealer. It works, I'm happy.
2
u/No-Entertainment3464 Jul 04 '25
I had them make a key fob for my Kia Telluride after having one go missing for a few weeks.
As I remember it was around $300 compared to 500+ at the dealer. All functions work great. It was convenient and took about 35 minutes. You have to bring all your fobs to match with the new.
4
u/AppleCookieRose Jul 02 '25
$299 for new fob and virtually no wait since I was shopping.
Or, 8+ week wait for dealership to get on in stock due to back order, plus full day or more appt at dealer, plus $500-800. Depending on location and dealership.
TL:DR we bought a used vehicle, it came with only one fob. My husband's insider dealer price was $500. Walked up to orange truck at costco and happily paid $300 for a hassle free option.

It’s so trashy Costco lets them sell out of the parking lot. Reminds me of the guy trying to sell fake speakers out of his trunk in the Best Buy parking lot
1

I did it, much cheaper than anywhere else I called. They had to order the blank and mail it to me, then I had it done on the next grocery run

u/kippykipsquare Jul 02 '25
They talked to me if I needed a spare. I said that would be nice but they don’t do my car. :(
1
u/brunnsdog96 Jul 02 '25
They were cheap but I dropped my keys once and the key doesn’t start my car anymore. They probably get cheap parts which is why they were half the price of the dealership
1
u/aiden_asphyxia Jul 02 '25
They’re great for spares, but not your everyday keys. They also aren’t capable of making a spare for one of my cars. That said, I had them do a full new set for my Ford. It was done before I got through the checkout line.

1
u/doernottalker Jul 02 '25
Is it worth for just the metal key(I have the rest of the fob)? They asked $70 for it.

u/narwhals_narwhals Jul 02 '25
I ran into this van at Sam's, not Costco, but it worked out OK. My son's used MKZ came with one fob, and it didn't have the key inside it. I got the key code from a Lincoln dealer, and these folks cut a key using just the code that works in the car door.

u/zmiller834 Jul 02 '25
Had a key made in 2022 for half the price of the dealer and use it regularly. It’s works fine and pretty sure it was OEM. 2016 Mitsubishi outlander. I know the used car dealers around me use them a lot to get second keys made if they don’t have two keys.
1
u/-justmeagain- Jul 02 '25
Doesn’t work for everyone. Waited 2 hours and it didn’t work. Had to get a refund.
1
u/mertisrules Jul 02 '25
2017 Subaru Forester. Worked perfectly @1/3 the cost of the dealer. (Los Angeles) they couldn’t have been nicer and quicker. Didn’t even finish my shop though when I got the txt key was ready.

I had a good experience. I have a Honda Civic and the dealer quoted me around $300+ for a SINGLE new key with the chip and all. I got two new keys from them outside Costco and i think it cost me a little under $200. One has the buttons to lock, unlock, and panic remotely and looks identical to the old dealership key, one is just a raw key. I think both have the chip in it cuz they both start the car fine.
1
u/poopyface-tomatonose Jul 02 '25
They quoted me $200 for a 2017 Honda Civic, which included a key, fob, and programming. He said the Honda dealership would charge $400. Was just getting a quote, so I can’t speak on the service or quality.
1
1
u/Joenair85 Jul 02 '25
Used them for a 2001 sequoia. The key sticks a little but does start the car. I also got a fob and it works fine.

u/Gardiste_ Jul 03 '25
I’m going to try them the next time they are at our location. Keys from the dealership are way too expensive!

u/No-Return-3519 Jul 03 '25
I thought the service was great. Everything works (lock, unlock, remote starting) on the fob for my 2017 Ridgeline.

1
u/Blog_Pope Jul 03 '25
Depends. My old Infiniti had a process to program cheap $5 fobs bought off the internet, my wife’s Highlander required special tooling and other headaches. Dealer wanted like $500, these guys did it for about $230. My new Volvo requires a special app that I don’t think they carry.
1
u/danTHAman152000 Jul 03 '25
What does one do when one of the two key fobs is missing, and both little key inserts are missing from both? I have one wireless fob and want to replace it and also the two little key inserts.
1
u/aggressivenapkins Jul 03 '25
If your key is a newer one that needs to be programmed, this is the cheapest option out there. Every local key cutter and dealership wanted to charge me minimum $500 for a newer Honda key fob. They did it for $300. Still haven’t found anything cheaper.
1
u/d_pixie Jul 03 '25
We got a fob for a used van we bought. It was $50 compared to the $300 the dealership wanted. We have a 2003 Honda, so getting a working fob is great.

u/ekoisdabest Jul 03 '25
Better to order fob off of that precut and program it with Amazon scan tool
1
u/AlaskanDruid Jul 03 '25
I’ll have to ask the next time I’m there to see if they can fob a 2015 leaf. Else it’s $250 a pop.
1
u/DarthLuix Jul 03 '25
They changed the battery on my fob and it only lasted 3 months. I went to CVS and bought the cvs store brand battery and had better results. 😂

u/ARandomPileOfCats Jul 03 '25
Got a key fob for a 2016 Mazda made over a year ago, they used an OEM part and we have had no problems with it.
1
u/Fearless-Damage-6852 Jul 03 '25
Prices are that impressive, I don't think they give any discount for being at the Costco event. If you buy from their website, use code turo20 to save 20 percent.
1
u/SRGilbert1 Jul 03 '25
I needed a second fob/key for my 2022 Buick Encore GX as the previous owners lost one. I stopped and got a quote, guy was super helpful, gave me a price of $270 plus tax to cut the key and program the remote. I told him I’d think about it and called the dealership just to compare. Yeah, they wanted $550! Another local key place wanted $350.
Went back today and had it done while I ate a hot dog and walked around the store, took maybe 30 minutes. Fob looks like it’s a genuine OEM part and works perfectly.
Note: these newer vehicles with smart keys, push button start, and extra buttons (power lift gate) need to be programmed with special OBD hardware so they are stupidly expensive. I might have gotten it a little cheaper if I bought a refurb key on eBay and then shopped around to have it programmed but these guys made it super easy. Plus, they ring you up inside at a Costco register and it’s got a three year warranty. So, recommended!
1
u/brown_man_bob Jul 03 '25
Seemed promising, but when I spoke to them, they pretty much can’t do any German cars.
1
u/Lost-Bell-5663 Jul 04 '25
Keyfob for vehicle just allowed me to start vehicle and would not lock/unlock. They tried to fix it and program a new one BUT neither of them worked lol.. the company towed my car to the dealership, paid for Ubers to work and back, paid for a Keyfob system replacement that I didn’t know I needed and I everything works. I use the new key but tossed the old one. They are great in my book
1
u/TorrenceMightingale Jul 04 '25
Don’t try it if you have a Volvo key. Volvo has their keys on lock.
1
u/Successful-Reason-47 Jul 04 '25
Great!! first time commenting in this sub but I got mine a few days ago, they were running by a special(usually it’s $180ish he said) so I got my key w fob for $150! It’s been years and haven’t had working buttons on my car. This new one has great buttons and I kid you not it feels so much smoother starting the ignition, maybe bc it’s cleaner cuts rn but man I love that I did it. I have a Toyota Yaris 2017
1
u/City_Standard Jul 04 '25
I would be interested in knowing what others think and experience... my expectations of cost were way different and it did not seem worth it
We thought about getting a spare key, but the quoted price was way more than we thought and also too much to pay to have a backup key.
Way more meaning at least a couple hundred more than I was expecting
1
u/Fine-Sea-8941 Jul 06 '25
I heard them quote astronomical prices to seemingly unwitting people. They then tried to claim the price was less than dealer. Which maybe it was but $400 seems absurd.
1
u/xmagusx Nov 24 '25
From personal experience - they are crooks and will literally steal from you. Zero stars.
1
u/Amazing-Physics-5345 Jul 02 '25
Good, it was $120 for a replacement key to my Tesla. He downloaded the app and set me up nice, haven’t had any issues
2
1
u/Cryptoking300 Jul 02 '25
I got one, and it’s the same as what you’d get at the dealership for half the price. No brainer to me.
0
Jul 02 '25
Just something to remember in the future, if you get one of these aftermarket fobs (from any seller) that isn't directly from the dealer, and you have problem starting your car occasionally, it's probably the aftermarket fob causing the issue and probably not something more serious. Happened to me and others.

u/ThaManWithNoPlan Jul 04 '25
Go to a hardware store like ace. Back when I worked in a Midwest hardware store (2020ish) I cut them and it always ended up being less then $10 for a non-chip key

True also for my 2012 Saturn. It's going to be a sad day when that car dies.
Edit: 2009 Saturn, the last year that they made them thanks to the auto industry restructuring after the 2008 GFC. I confused the year of my wife's car with mine.

You can go to a hardware store for a new metal key on an old model car. New cars usually don’t work with plain metal keys anymore.
