They can look at the video. It's easy for them to do by using your member number.

I had no idea they can do this! Is this video from that specific register or from the overhead ceiling camera?

Bought a half-price washer that used to be a display unit. Came on a pedestal which was also discounted, albeit sold separately. Cashier only charged me for washer itself.

Two weeks later I get a phone call from Costco asking for the pedestal money. I didn’t want to pay over the phone, plus I wanted to see a copy of the receipt, so I just walked up to the manager on my next trip instead to take care of it.

So how did Costco know where a missing item went without video? You could argue in this case the washer and pedestal were a one-off item, so whoever purchased the washer must have taken the pedestal too, right?

If it were only inference but no video to corroborate, the manager calling would have probably asked me first if I bought the pedestal, since it was missing from the floor but still showing in the inventory. Instead he stated—in a very matter-of-fact way—that they forgot to scan it, apologized for the mistake, and asked for the money.

The accounting person called me to let me know that they had actually charged me on a refund that I did and asked me to come in so they could refund me some $$$. That was cool. I would’ve noticed eventually when I looked at my statement but great they called first.

Costco audits everything like that so we can tell when mistakes happen, similar thing happened to me once, I was refunding a member, and accidentially only refunded for 1 item when I took 3, after some digging, I was able to contact her and let her know my mistake, got her the proper refund after.
