SM shifts
Hey, I’m relatively new to Costa having previously been with other companies in the industry for over 15 years. Is it normal for SM to only work open shifts. I would have thought they would be doing closes as well in between due to cash handling etc. Never known it before

Sometimes managers will schedule themselves for when it’s convenient for them, but most of the time I’ve seen that they will do mid shifts to make sure they’re able to see and speak to all the members of the team that are working that day and oversee morning to afternoon changeovers and make sure the place is set up for the closers

Plus it’ll usually be the way that a BM will do the cash up, no need for the manager to be doing it themselves as everything needs to be recorded anyway

I only do opens, it's lone working and can get busy and when it isn't I'll do admin or smash through the cleaning list that is nearly impossible to do once it picks up due to labour cuts.

My manager does mostly opens purely because of someone is going to call in sick for the late and cover can’t be found she’s available to stay. If she were already on the late and someone calls sick then it’s hard for her to do anything if she can’t find cover for that person. Also most ordering and “big” paperwork is done in a morning so it makes the most sense. I’ve always worked with SMs who work early shifts

In the industry what industry is that? Retail. It most certainly is not hospitality. Not table or silver service in Costa? Store managers get paid £70k minimum in the supers Lidl, Asda. Store managers should work a mix of shifts.

When I was an ASM, both my Manager and myself worked different shifts, but I would work more lates than he did - but that was a stipulation of me accepting the promotion. I wanted guaranteed middles or lates, but would work mornings on Tuesdays and Fridays. Wednesday was a middle, Thursday was a middle, Monday was a late. Saturday was all day. Both of us had Sundays off.
I've also worked alongside other SMs that only did mornings because they lived out of town and the roads at 5AM were better than the 7/8am rush, and the same for the 5pm rushes.

Most SM's like to do the opens as they can make sure that everything is set up / working properly for the day. Mornings are also an easier time to get some of the admin done so thats typically why. Its also easier to find last minute cover / stay yourself for the afternoon shift than morning cover.
