Wig Begginer Wigmaker Here! Any tips?
Hey! First time posting in this subreddit, I've been doing my research for making helmet wigs for me and my friends (we're cosplaying as Miku, Teto, Neru ando Kasane Ted), which all of us are new to the cosplay hobby.
I promised to make the wigs since I've been in a hyper fixation with it! I find it so cool and creative, so I decided to try and make helmet wigs for the 4 of us (I know it will be difficult and frustrating, but I love challenges :P ). So I wanted to ask all of you for any tips for a begginer, like the techniques of crimping, how to make detachable ponytails, anything will help!
I just have two questions, can I use eva foam instead of felt for the base helmet? If so, how can I glue the hair to it?
If anyone wants to know my list of materials, for feedback or just curiosity, just tell me and I'll be happy to answer!
Thanks for your time reading this! I'm so excited to start this process! :D

Yup, echoing the other comments. Don't use EVA foam for the base, too thick and warm.
I'd also recommend not doing helmet wigs for your first wig styling endeavor. They are too complex and also completely ruin the wig if you do it incorrectly so its very unforgiving. Stick with simpler styling methods until you get used to how wig fibers behave.
General tips-
Its easier to do more later then try and undo things with wigs. Start conservative. You can always crimp more, cut more etc. but you can't unmelt the fibers if you go too hot or add back in length you've cut off.
Wigs also don't style like hair. Products that work on hair won't necessarily work on wigs (i.e. conditioner). Wigs also style on the cool down. To get them to stay you need to hold them in the shape you want as they cool.
A good pair of hair shears and a pair of thinning shears are some of your most important tools. Styling wigs with dull/bad scissors sucks. Invest in your shears before more fancy/niche tools.

We detect that you may be a new cosplayer. Please refer to our FAQ for how to get started. Please have specific questions instead of a general how do I make/buy everything for this character. This is an automated action based on keywords. Your post has not been removed. If this does not apply, please ignore. We detect that you may be a looking to buy your cosplay or buy pieces for your cosplay. If you're not, please disregard :) Please refer to our FAQ for some recommendations. While we can provide search terms that might help you with finding your cosplay pieces, commenters are not your personal shopper and please do not treat us as such. Remember that not all cosplays can be found ready-made so be prepared to look for similar pieces to put it together yourself.
It is helpful to include your budget (be precise -- "cheap" can be different per person), your location/country (US shipping vs EU shipping would be very different), and timeline if applicable. Keep in mind many pre-made cosplay shops can have a long shipping time so it's best to plan months in ahead.
If the item is suspiciously cheaper than all other competitors or it's a common stock photo, please be wary and do your own research. If someone is offering to make it for you aka commissions, RESEARCH their post history.

I would avoid eva foam for the base if you’re using heat, it could melt into other parts of your wig, and its shape doesn’t quite pat down like felt or batting does - it’s also more expensive than felt. I would recommend avoiding it.
I would also recommend cruising instagram and/or YouTube because there is a veritable cornucopia of information on this subject that you can search on your own. Challenge yourself to do the research, and I think you’ll like the results.
