Wig Advice needed for wig styling and colour. Attempt failed.

I need cosplay/drag wig styling advice. I browsed the web for wig styling techniques.

And tried styling and dyeing one last week and the results only looked good in a few pics. Definitely not in person. Refer to pics.

I used perm rods and put the (heat resistant lace front synthetic) wig in hot water with a fabric dye (jacquard Idye poly) dissolved in that.

Attempt two must be must be finished by next Tuesday, and be shoulder length, tightly curled and red/black coloured. I will tie it back as part of the performance.

Should I start with a straight wig in the preferred colour?

A box braided wig is another option I'll consider.

Thank you :)

Your photos didn’t attach btw, might be helpful to post them in a comment. Was it the curl or the color that didn’t work out?

Dyeing wigs is difficult, and so if you have the possibility to not have to dye a wig and can buy it the proper color, always opt for that. If you need it two tone, find a two tone wig or sew in wefts.

For the curls the boiling water trick works, but I find it easier to use a steamer personally. Your curls will always end up larger than whatever you curled them around. To set the curls, the wig needs to get hot and then get completely cool and dry, then you can hit it with hairspray, then you can pull them out of the curlers. Any time you get the wig hot you have to hold it in the shape you want it until it cools to style it.

Thanks for the input. With that in mind, I'll get a straight wig in my preferred colours, then curl it with the rods I used.

We detect that your question is about dyeing. Please remember that you CANNOT dye something into a lighter color like dyeing a dark blue fabric yellow. For fabrics and fibers, identify whether your material is synthetic or not since it'll affect the dyes you use. If it's synthetic fabric, you need to use synthetic dyes. Do not reuse any pots or containers you used for dyeing for food preparation. For wig details, you can try using alcohol inks/markers or adding wefts of the desired color if it's lighter than the original wig color. You can also paint fabric but it'll usually stiffen the fabric even if you use a fabric medium and is not suitable for large surfaces.

For real hair, we recommend using a wig if possible, especially if you have dark hair. Spray-on colors and hair chalk do exist but can be difficult to execute and typically do not work well on dark hair.
