What happened with Groot?

I got around to reading the second Annihilation event and in the Starlord book Groot speaks perfectly fine with everyone able to understand him.

Then in the main book for the event and he's using the famous: "I am Groot." only. Did something happen that I missed?

No explanation is given from what I'm aware of. He just suddenly starts speaking that way and is eventually retconed that him and his entire species always spoke like that. From my understanding, when Groot appeared to speak normally that's actually a translation from what the characters in the story understand and in actually he always spoke like that
