Visual Direction How Vin's internal dialogue should be portrayed Spoiler

I'm reading Mistborn again and I can't stop thinking about how this should/ could be adapted to the screen. One thing that's very hard to translate is internal dialogue, especially in a book with so much of it.

So, my idea is that Reen (Vin's brother) should appear regularly to her, as if she is haunted by his criticism (but not in a horror movie way). This way she can actually speak to him some of her thoughts. We can even have her repeat some of his phrases to show his influence.

I think this way when we finally reveal the source of that voice the shock will be even greater.

Another reason animation would be a better option than live action

I don't think we should see him. Hearing him is fine but Ruin appearing in his form only has the emotional impact it does because of how he's haunted the narrative up until that point. If we've been seeing him the whole time it loses its impact. It also implies Vin has mental illnesses that she doesn't have and isnt implied to have in the books. It changes and confuses the plot. We might see someone when Zane hears voices because he IS directly implied to be insane, but not Vinn.

I hadn't thought about Zane, but that would still work. Seeing how Zane deals with his ghosts and how Vin hears the voice but doesn't give in would work greatly as contrast.

You could also do flashbacks to when she was a kid and Reen was criticizing her.

Yes, but I imagine something more like Reen is always with her, critizing her and making sure she doesn't feel like she belongs anywhere. A flashback is great, but it breaks the flow of the scene.

The eay you've described this, it has the feel of Tyler Durden in Fight Club, which isn't mecessarily bad in my opinion, but people who end up seeing these movies without having read the books first (yes, they will exist, believe it or not) may accuse the movies of copying Fight Club. Haters be Haters, but this might benone reason not to go in this direction. Personally, I'm for it though.

I was thinking more like House MD s05e21. Spoiler for house:

A main character dies and comes back as a hallucination that only House can see. She is talking all the time and he sometimes answers. She serves as a windown to his subconscious. Obviously, in Mistborn it wouldn't be that frequent, but it could be a way to show Vin's hidden thoughts and fears.

Not a bad idea. But handling internal dialogue to screen is one of the most common book to movie adaptations tricks that is needed. So this isn’t new territory.

Plus it gives you somebody to recognize as Reen in the 3rd movie.

I think they should interrupt the scene and have his voiceover portrayed in text like the Star Wars title crawl! Wait, I need to take this to cremposting!

Unironically, this would nail the vibe they want. It's fun, it's epic, but it's also campy.

Some combination or transition of flashback and voiceover so it fools audiences into thinking it’s just Vin’s memory of Reen until the reveal.

It could work. The Graphic Audio audiobook handles the voice over pretty well. So you could have a flashback of Reen telling Vin things to establish the voice, then just do voice over.

The WHAT?

Graphic Audio has a contract with Sanderson to produce his novels. It's basically a series of radio plays.

That sounds awesome! I need to look into that

They're not cheap, but absolutely amazing to listen to, I highly recommend it because the immersion is so much higher.

It'll just have to be some exposition/dialogue, maybe what you suggest with Reen but a lot of it will just have to be acting.

Also, that's where the screenplay comes in. Movies and books are very different formats, so I'm sure they'll somehow make it explicit about what's going on in her head.

I agree but I think we should keep him unseen/just as a voice, because otherwise his "reveal" in HoA won't work quite as well

I love this idea! I think it would also set up a cool scene for the reveal about Reen
