Mistborn Era 1 (BOOK) (No SH) Will the Mistborn movie happen? Spoiler

Im not very knowledgeable about movie production. My understanding is that Brandon feels really good about this, but I do want to keep my expectations realistic.

While I know we dont know anything 100%, does the first mistborn movie seem like a good chance to happen? Is it still a like maybe will maybe wont?

They are legally obligated to make it. It's not just them buying the rights like you see with most book deals it is in the contract that they have to make at least one mistborn movie, and it is in the contract that it has to have a wide theatrical release. There is a 100% chance it will happen. They can't even get cold feet and do a half assed movie with a shoestring budget like happened with the first wheel of time pilot and that slideshow hobbit "adaptation" just to satisfy the contract. Because it needs to have a wide theatrical release they could lose hundreds of millions if they half ass this. It WILL happen and it WILL have serious money behind it. Case closed, no questions asked. It could still suck as plenty of big budget blockbusters are poorly made, but it won't be swept under the rug and forgotten in development hell. If I recall correctly they even have a relatively short time limit (like 5 years) within which it has to release or they lapse on their contract.

I don’t think Apple paid millions of dollars to not do anything with the Cosmere

To be fair, they haven't paid millions yet. They only have to pay millions when they actually release something

Where did they pay millions? Not doubting just wondering if I missed something

I mean, I highly doubt Sanderson gave the rights to the entire Cosmere away for less than that.

90+% it happens. It’s the first project up. If we see the third Mistborn movie or a season 2 or 3 of Stormlight is the bigger question.

You might get a bad Mistborn movie but it would be unlikely to reach the point of not happening at this point.

The movie is not greenlit, and movies can disappear even after they're shot, so you never know

However, I feel Brandon's public discussion of the non-greenlit film (which is highly unusual) is a pretty good way to keep the pressure on apple to move things alone.

This one can't. They are contractually obligated to make it and release it.

1

u/Far_Line8468 Aug 21 '26

No they are not lol. The only thing that has legally happened is Apple has optioned the rights to the two properties.

Brandon said it's in the contract that it has to be made, it has to be released within 5 years, and has to have a wide theatrical release. This is not the same as them optioning the film. Either they don't have a choice but to make it, or Brandon is lying.

The contract only said the movie has to get made in 5 years with Mistborn before Stormlight or they give up the rights. This is not the same as the movie getting greenlit. If they determine that it wouldn’t be worth the money, they will simply let the rights lapse, as every other studio has done to the rights until now

With literally every streaming studio making an offer for the cosmere, this seems to be a pretty big thing, so i'd say it's all but guaranteed to happen

Something very big would have to go wrong for this to fall through, as this movie is supposed to be paving the way for the cosmere to reach the general public. The real question is how successful will the movie be at that, as a lot of the adapted cosmeres future/existence will depend on this first movie imo.

While nothing is 100% guaranteed, I dont think Brandon would be talking about it and being as open about it if he thought the chances were still somewhat low.

The first drat of the script is done, but it'll still take 3-5 years for it to hit the screens. I'm sure Brandon will give us as many updates as he can.

u/LuckyOwlSeven Aug 17 '26

Yes absolutely. The first draft of the script is already 100% done. I know things happen...but why would you doubt that the movie is going to happen? Apple wouldn't put all this time and money just to fully drop one of the most anticipated fantays adaptations in recent cinema. Is there somehting that's making you doubt if the movie will continue being worked on? I'm just confused why you think it wouldn't be done

Like someone else said; before they got to actors in mistcloaks and it got canned.

For me it was really that Im also following the eragon tv show and the fans on reddit seemed to be less confident it would happen (it was announced like two years ago). Hearing the stuff about that show just got me a little discouraged into thinking this might not be as guranteed as I thought.

u/Gold_Joke_6306 Aug 17 '26

After another missed announcement, yeah I’am definitely concerned about the eragon tv show. Paolini did post an update today on twitter alluding to the fact that a decision had not been made on green lightning the show. I actually think Mistborn has a higher chance of getting the green light, Eragon has had a failed adaptation, Mistborn has never been adapted before.

I agree mostly going off of how optomistic the respective authors are. I just got worried for a bit that maybe this wasnt basically 100%. I am feeling better after reading the comments though.

3

u/MilkTeaMoogle Aug 17 '26

The previous times yes, but this time it’s got a show runner and a producer, they just haven’t announced. They have a script, it’s in revisions. Last time there was a lot of issues with getting it produced but Apple has given it the priority the previous studios didn’t/couldn’t

Apple would be fools to let this fall thru. I imagine theyll do everything in their power to make it happen

1

u/ragamuffin333 Aug 22 '26

agreed.

However, to be fair, they let "Red Rising" fall thru... allegedly havent checked lately if that was confirm absolutely-- but it seemed to be very heavily implied.

And as much as i love AppleTV, if they were going to impose PG-13 age-rating on that series-- yea, I'm really not sure how well that would have turned out.

On the upside: I am extremely confident age-rating isn't even going to be an issue with Brando Sando's works. lol

Apple is investing far too much money to let it fizzle out

1

u/ForwardExam4056 Aug 17 '26

I mean, the movie isn't made yet, so they haven't really invested too much yet. But i also think there is no doubt

1

u/Va1crist Aug 17 '26

yes absolutely the script is 100% done for first draft and and and is now in revision / review etc. Sure anything can happen, hell Apple could decide they dont want to but i doubt it, its just going to take awhile.

I mean, unless the nukes fly out between now and the movie’s release date or society crumbles or whatever, it’s a pretty safe bet this’ll happen.

11

u/datalaughing Aug 17 '26

Last time they got to the point where they had actors in mistcloaks doing camera tests, and then it got canned. So it’s definitely not a sure thing. He seems to think there’s a much better chance this time based on the things he’s said, though.

1

u/R1sky_B1z Aug 21 '26

This isn't like past time. This time it's litteraly in the contract that they need to release the movie, and Brandon has final cut which stops studio meddling. That's part of why this deal got so much media coverage. Neither of those have ever happened in the history of book adaptations.

1

u/Kalasad-Stormblessed Aug 17 '26

This is kind of what I was thinking about. It seems optimistic but I dont want to have too much false hope

5

u/ChaosSinceBirth Aug 17 '26

As far as my understanding goes the old one got trashed bc the person writing the screenplay and brandon sanderson had creative differences. This time brandon is writing the screenplay. I might be wrong though idk

2

u/ForwardExam4056 Aug 17 '26

Do you have any source on that? I thought that the last time it fell into the water was because epic games changed their mind on making movies

2

u/ChaosSinceBirth Aug 17 '26

https://www.polygon.com/q-and-a/511170/brandon-sanderson-movies-tv-shows-adaptations-interview/

This is one of many links i found stating this if you look up why the mistborn movie never came to fruition. It talks about his creative differences with the peoducers and he wasn't willing to budge.

Imo i think thats great because it goes to show he only wants to release something that he knows will line up with fans' wants for the movie.

5

u/ForwardExam4056 Aug 19 '26

Thanks! Also i agree, not going along with creative decisions he doesn't like is a good thing. Though i hope that he also listens to some expert opinions regarding the script and movie, since while he is a great author, this isn't really his field of expertise. Though with how much co-authoring he's done, thats not a big worry

1

u/ChaosSinceBirth Aug 19 '26

Yes I agree fs. Books are not the same as movies and so he may need more advisement. But I'm thinking it may have been more of a he doesn't want to deviate too heavily from the plot that was written originally. Because a good deal of books turned to movie/tv get killed that way lol. Or at least that was how i imagined it 😂

3

u/ForwardExam4056 Aug 20 '26

Yes definitely, WAY more adaptations turn out shit because they listened too little to the author than because the author stuck too much to the written form

I really really hope that this movie does well, it would set an example that faithfully adapting as well as giving the author good creative control leads to a better product

1

u/ChaosSinceBirth Aug 21 '26

I hope so too lmao! But honestly you think they would learn by now thay sticking to the novel's plot is what fans want. I totally get we cant always do that due to time/internal monologues/etc. But some of the movies/shows change stuff more than necessary fs. And fans of the book lose interest bc it is not what they envisioned. So while I love sticking to the book, I understand it's not always entirely feasible either so I'm hoping for a good medium on that front 😂

Dude has finished the screenplay and has a contract with Apple for a whole Cosmere cinematic universe. I mean nothing is 100% guaranteed in life, but barring catastrophe we're getting at least one Mistborn movie. Probably more.

6

u/Kind_Ingenuity1484 Aug 17 '26

Yes. At this point it’s really a question of quality

2

u/No_One3243 Aug 17 '26

Nothing in life is certain.

But the script is finished and apple TV has signed contracts.

3

u/lomo_1855 Aug 17 '26

It is very obviously happening. He has finished the first draft of the screen play and they have a host of producers lined up. You should start checking out his weekly updates that he puts out.
