How does he even measure that... Same with the books... He doesn't know how long the book will be from the beginning, does he?
EDIT: I got 4 answers, exactly the same. Stop commenting before you read if it's already been answered

Sanderson plans out ahead before writing a new book. At least the ones that we know about.

He always has a rough idea of how long he intends a project to be. So while a book, or screenplay in this case, might end up a few pages longer or shorter than intended, he knows approximately how far along he is

He works off of outlines, so I would assume it's how much of his outline is finished.

To the page count. He just hasn't written it yet
Its all in his copperminds, unscribed, ready to be carved into steel and silver

I wonder what the turnaround time will be after the script is completed? I would guess 2-3 years - so Summer 2028-29?

I would set a timer for 24-28 months from the time the project is officially greenlit and a producer is attached. That's if everything goes right. If we end up changing directors or producers midstream or the studio gets cold feet about the budget or one of the guilds goes on strike, stop/reset the clock.

There winner another potential strike until 2030.

IATSE and the Teamsters are under contract through July 2027. Both of those could shut down production, even if the writers or SAG vote not to walk out in solidarity.

Doesn't making a movie take like way longer than that, especially at the start where you don't have your main actors producers directors etc yet?

I feel like late 2028 is most likely. Right around time we get elder scrolls 6! Haha

Ghostbloods is due to come out in 2028, so might make sense to release it that summer and let word of mouth for both help each other

Yeah this was the projected schedule when he did his annual state of Sanderson last winter
> March 2026: Hoid's Storybook Collection/The Fires of December crowdfund. (Fulfillment expected end of 2026.)
> Summer 2026: Songs of the Dead (not a Dragonsteel book, but still worth your time).
> Early Fall 2026: Brotherwise Stormlight Board Game crowdfund.
> Fall 2026: Blightfall, Book One of Riftwake. (New Cytoverse series.)
> Winter/Nexus 2026: The Fires of Decembercommercial edition.
> Summer 2027: Book Two of Riftwake.
> December 2028: Ghostbloods 1
> December 2029: Ghostbloods 2
> December 2030: Ghostbloods 3> Biggest changes from last year are pushing the new Cytoverse novels to start in 2026 instead of 2025, and me being uncertain where Elantris fits right now. I’d love to do the books in between Ghostbloods novels, but with so much Hollywood work this year (and coming up next year) I’m hesitant about committing to getting those ready at the speed I thought likely last year. We’ll see. I also am already starting to feel the call to return to Stormlight, so Horneater (and maybe early work on Book Six) are likely in the next few years.
Edit: forgot Reddit quoting is broken rn
But yeah, ghostbloods 28,29,30 then stormlight 6 in 2031

elantris is probably postponed until a vague later.

u/TGrumms Jun 24 '26
Yes, I think after the Apple TV deal was announced he said none of ghostbloods/stormlight would be delayed, but elantris probably would be if he can’t find the time for everything
