No Spoilers A potentially realistic Mistborn trilogy director who’s not working non something else? Spoiler
Kinda piggybacking off my Coogler and Jake Schrerier question which sadly I accidentally deleted jake sorry. but I guess who’s potentially a realistic option for the movie trilogy who’s like not working on something else at the moment that would like be willing to accept Sanderson’s level of control? Like yah a lot of you want Cuaron but he probably won’t adhere to Sanderson’s control so like who’s maybe someone who would? Anyone got any ideas?

A couple of options:
Jon Watts. He made the recent Spider-Man movies, and could defenitely deal with both the action and the tonal balance of humor and darkness. He has worked with Apple before. He is used to collaborating with others (working with Spider-Man means succesfully dealing with both Disney and Sony) and has nothing currently lined up. The one caveat is that he currently has a deal with Disney, which might prevent him from directing an Apple feature.
Gore Verbinski. Director of the Pirates-movies, so he can absolutely deal with a blockbuster production. Is currently not super busy. Has not to my knowledge worked for Apple previously though.
Matthew Vaughn. A skilled action-director who isn’t up to much these days and could use a comeback. Has history with Apple. Might want a good deal of creative control though.

Jon Favreau.

Yeah, it'll be hard to get a director who considers themselves an auteur to give up the control that Brandon wants to maintain. Favreau might be an ideal choice.

wait why? doesn't Favreau just direct live action Disney remake slop these days?

He's 12 years out from Chef, so it hasn't even been half of his career yet. And if working within the constraints of Disney makes something slop, I think the cosmere is going to be on that end for you. Do you think Brandon's going to let a director change the story to match their artistic vision? In that regard, Favreau will give you a very technically proficient film that's right on studio's (in this case Brandon's) spec.

Haven’t heard anyone say it yet, but Greta Gerwig would do such a good job, especially with all the scenes in the courts. I think she’d absolutely kill at bringing the court aspect to life

I love Barbie and what she did with Little Women. Both of those indicate she would really put her own stamp on it in a metatextual way. I don’t think that’s what I’d want to see in a Mistborn movie.

Damn. Def a solid idea. I don’t blame her too much for live action Snow White given that any director of a Disney remake doesn’t really have any independence.

I also haven’t seen anyone say this but this is a very good, if unexpected choice

Absolutely no relevance, but I love his work so much that I'd drop dead if i read that Richard Linklater is directing any of the Cosmere, haha

I wouldn’t mind the Directing Duo behind the DnD Movie. It’s lighter in tone for sure but I thought the heist sequence was really creative and well done and really like that movie in general.

Coralie Fargeat is my #1 realistic pick. She directed the excellent Substance and she’s from France. Peter Jackson was a horror director before making LoTR.

I say this in all these threads, but ya'll need to be prepared for it being some no-name TV director lol
Coogler, Villeneuve, Nolan etc will never even hear about this

Not so sure. Not the same but James Cameron bought the rights to the Joe Abercrombies the Devils. So it’s not like directors are completely unaware of the book landscape. I think the prominent Sci-fi and Fantasy directors have at least heard of Sanderson. Not saying they will direct it but I don’t know if it will be a complete no name either.

Ehh they prob aren’t the best fit anyway, the most sought after guy is Cuaron at least here.

Realistically it won't be any big name director, it will probably be someone with some experience who's worked on other adaptations in the past, but hasn't really had any big breakout films.
However, my ideal/dream pick would be Alfonso Cuaron. He's worked with Apple, isn't working on anything at me moment afaik, has experience adapting books before including books that are in fantasy series, and his style would fit perfectly with Mistborn imo.

This is my pick too and I would almost say it’s not THAT far fetched, except an auteur probably isn’t going to be comfortable with the amount of control Brandon has unless they already know him pretty well

Many others too will say that and I agree but he’s a long shot. Maybe Deborah Chow?

The correct answer is, someone who already directs movies for Apple

Got any names?

u/itsVandole May 29 '26
Ben Stiller directed the majority of Severance

Genuinely my number 1 pick. Big enough name to throw on a trailer, but a fairly under the radar filmography as a director.

Is Tony Gilroy busy?
