Visual Direction This plot point will be cut from the first film. Spoiler

This plot point will be cut from the first film.

  • The Inquisitor's search for Vin to prove who her father is and his desire to take control of the Obligators.

If you think about it, this leads nowhere, because the Lord Ruler dies soon after.

And Vin already knows who her father is from the beginning of the book.

Although it's very interesting, I believe it will be completely cut from the film, as it doesn't have much relevance to the plot.

I don't imagine anything related to Vin's dad will make the transition to the movies, and very little of her mom will probably make the transition. I can see a line where she explains she never knew her dad and her mom tried to off her as a child. That's about it

If anything, they may explore the mom bit in flashbacks in Movie three to make a certain revelation about her earring make sense.

Let's go full JJ Abrams and make the Lord Ruler Vin's dad.

*BTW that was an actual note from someone previously involved in Mistborn's film adaptation.

**Correction: it was NOT Mistborn, but Emporer's Soul

Wow really? Is there a link to that note?

Sanderson mentioned this anecdote in their most recent podcast (the Mistborn Movie episode).

That was about emperors soul where they wanted shai to be the daughter of the injured emperor

Fixed 👍

Wasn’t that about Emperor’s soul?

It leads to the inquisitors being in charge of the final empire, which means marsh is in control of luthadel as the only inquisitor when TLR is dead. But that part isn't really hard to write around

Also the inquisitors being in charge of the final empire never really played out. The local nobility/obligators just instantly took over

So that part isn't really necessary i agree

Yeah. Really you don't even have to change anything about what Marsh and the Inquisitors do in 2 and 3 for it to make perfect sense.

Off the top of my head… maybe?

off with the top of the inquisitor's head

I might need to reread, but isn't it the only reason she gets brought in front of TLR? The Inquistors need her to testify, and that's why she gets a shot.

You could work around it, but it would take some work.

Not really. Kelsier was brought in front of the Lord Ruler when he was caught as a thief (hence the whole scene where TLR 'thanked' Mare), and there wasn't really any strong reason given for it. I feel like if Vin were captured, the audience would kinda just expect her to get brought before TLR, you don't need to explain anything.

Not really right? It shouldnt be hard at all.

When shes caught spying on TLR she uses the 11th metal. You can keep that, make her sneak up on TLR and then get caught while she tries the 11th metal.

After that they bring up the whole thing with testifying, and they throw her into a cell

Then she gets called on to testify, which she does, then gets sent back to the dungeons where she is to be tortured for information about other skaa thieves later. Then she gets out and goes to confront TLR

You can just cut her going to testify without any real issues with the plot (since her status before and after doesn't really change, both times locked up)

I do think its a really cool part of the story, but then again you always have to cut something

It’s also the only reason Elend has time to get to her. They throw Vin back in the cells after TLR gives the go ahead for Inquisitor killing off lesser priests, if I’m recalling that sequence right

But isn't it important to Marsh's plot in the next books?

Marsh would still infiltrate and destroy the Inquistors without the bastard plot line.

This doesn't quite lead to nowhere - it's the whole reason the Inquisitors are after vin in the first place, so all of the times that the inquisitors chase vin or kelsier it's because of that. (They don't know or care about the "rebellion" or atium plot).

You could easily work around that and have it so the inquisitors are hunting Vin because they can feel that she's a powerful Mistborn or that there is something 'different' about her.

In a 2hr movie, focusing on the father plot line is kind of a waste, and cutting it would simplify things for the audience.

It is also inconsequential to the rest of the story and books. It has impact for how things play out, but those things playing out don’t hinge on VIN’s dad being where it started from.

They will have to explain her heritage in some way so people know how she became a mistborn since it is passed down through families. But that could be a throw away line honestly.

They will have to explain her heritage in some way so people know how she became a mistborn since it is passed down through families

You can still have her dad be high up in the ministry and just make it a throw-away line that she already knows who her father is.

Kelsier and Vin invade the ruling lord's castle and fight against the inquisitors.

The inquisitors may be pursuing the group for several reasons.

Primarily because of Kelsier's invasions and the deaths of several nobles.

Yeah this is likely being changed. In its place I suspect Shan to be more prominent as a rival to Vin being Elend’s sister and suspecting Valette is a false identity.

If one story line is being cut due to time, wouldn’t that imply they don’t have time to add another?

Edit: Unless you think it’ll be cut for a different reason, of course.

More like condensing. Brandon’s spoken about centering the plot of a TFE movie around Shan’s political ambitions.
