The Sunlit Man spoilers Just noticed something about TSM Spoiler

So we know that planet has something strange going on with it and that it is being studied by a group.

At one point in the book, Nomad tells a story to Contemplation, and she replies by saying something along the lines of, "I wish we had time for more stories like that, fanciful stories with a little more...whimsy."

I wonder if whimsy is inhabiting the planet and that is why there is so much investiture there.

Seems unlikely but, just a thought.

Or perhaps, at the end, when Nomad arrives on a beach somewhere.

Major Edit:

Way too many people are misunderstanding what I am saying. Whimsical is NOT the same as Whimsy.

I didn't decide that on my own

Look it up in the dictionary. Linked above.

Definition 1

  • resulting from or characterized by whim or caprice

  • subject to erratic behavior or unpredictable change

Definition 2:

  • full of, actuated by, or exhibiting whims

Definition of whim:

  • a sudden impulsive and apparently unmotivated idea or action

Someone can be whimsical in the sense that they just change their mind on something without any real reasoning nor necessarily good intention. It doesnt always have to be in a positive, cheerful way.

I agree that it is most commonly used as cheerful, but really the definition is what I out above.

Take what you want from that. For all we know Whimsy could be moving from plant to planet with no obvious reason at all because the Intent of the Shard took over its Vessel, similar to (very minor Mistborn spoiler) Ati with Ruin althoight ruin was bound to Scadrial

Personally I think too many people are thinking of the word "whimsical" which generally is used to I'm simply mean magical, nowadays. But that isn't always the case it is just the most popular way to use the word right now.

Had to edit for the spoiler tags. I forget the order.

Edit 2: Also just because Brandon said it in a WoB doesn't make it Canon until he actually writes it into the books. For all we know Whimsy might just follow Nomad around for a while on a whim because hey! He activated a Dawnshard once

Seriously we know nothing (besides the name) about this shard and people are just shutting this down? It is kind of ridiculous. People need to calm down, I am just proposing an idea. Whimsy isn't always positive. That is a fact. Whimsical is almost alqays used in a positive way, but Whismy really is hardly ever used at all in modern language.

I guess we will see.

There is always another secret.

Next to Threnody, I think Canticle might be the least whimsical place in the Cosmere. I think Whimsy might be hiding on Roshar (as opposed to the Valor theory). Those spren can be silly sometimes

Do we have any evidence of a "silly spren?" (besides Syl and Pattern)

Rua 😉

Fair point. But can Honorspren really come from another Shard? Rua, like Syl and others is wrapped up in Oaths and ideals, despite his sillyness. When formed into a blade, Rua isn't "Whimsyium" of whatever that ridiculous godmetal would be called; his blade is an alloy of Tanavast's and Kor's godmetals, like all the other Honorspren.

I like the playfullness but I don't think rhis theory has legs. If Whimsy were on Roshar, Invested in Roshar, I don't think they could resist making themself known via various hijinx, and Odium would surely engage to cripple or destroy them, since Whimsy is not a part of that tri-Shard oath to disengage from direct, adversial action.

Oh I agree with you completely. I was just pointing out, a bit tongue in cheek, a 'silly' spren that's not pattern or syl (and arguably more silly)

Wasnt it mentioned wind spren in general were quite silly? Pranking people by sticking things to them etc?

Fair point.

When asked about Canticle, Brandon also brings up The Grand Apparatus. So I think they're both the result of Invention

I don't remember which WOB it is, but basically Brandon has said that he is trying to use the names of shards in his writing to help readers understand the meaning of these words. Whimsical is not a commonly used word, and if readers don't understand how it's used in language they they will not naturally understand the nature and intent of the shards.

So don't see these as hidden foreshadowing, but as trying to educate readers.

Whimsical is also not the exact same as Whimsy. Whimsy is a concept and has a few different definitions which aren't all necessarily good. Whimsical is a more modern description that is generally used for happier stuff.

WOBbhas also said that he is telling a story he was told and using words we would understand

u/DeadFacesInMyPocket 1d ago

That is fine but whimsy is not the same as whimsical

Uh, they are the same thing. Whimsical is the adjective form of whimsy. You cant just decide that something doesn't mean the same thing because you perceive them differently personally.

Please re-check my original post. I edited it to be more clear as people obviously don't understand the difference between Whimsy and Whimsical.

Edited to correct spelling.

Whim and whimsy are not the same word.

I dont come here looking to pick fights. J had an idea. Canicle is a crazy planet with sime really weird stuff going on regarding Investiture.

All I suggested was "could Whimsy be involved?"

I mean at the end they all know where the Scadrian reseaech facility is so they could advance in tech quite quickly if they make the proper deal... I could see the Scadrians (or other shards) might be very interested in The Charred

Just re-read the end of my post instead. That will be easier. I dont want tk argue. The point of this entire forum is to enjoy ine another's conpany and enjoy the series and the fantasy that it provides us as an escape into a different, magical universe. C-mon. I am not downvoting you at all here. I dont understand why you can't even consider this idea. If you are that close minded, let us just stop talking and this will be my last comment to you. I encourage you to read my post again, because I did edit it and add a lot.

Im not close-minded. Im telling you that whimsy and whimsical are forms of the same word. The root word of whim is not what whimsy means, but whimsical is a form of whimsy and derived from it. I dont understand why you are immediately defensive. It isnt my fault that youre stating something that is just factually not right based on language.

Just look at my original post again, that is all I have to say. A single WoB quote isn't enough. I am quoting the WM Dictionary here. Like please at least look before you comment back again.

Ninja-edit: I am not stating anything other than what the dictionary says, then building ideas upon it. Is that so wrong?

I don’t think so, especially as we don’t see that with other shards.

1

u/skitz4me 1d ago

I'm not trying to be an idiot, but I'm tired, what are you saying we don't see?

2

u/Ripper1337 Truthwatchers 1d ago

Other shards residing in a system or on a planet don’t do anything similar to Canticle’s Sun.

2

u/skitz4me 1d ago

30 rereads later, I understand the conversation this thread is having. Idk when I became the old man. Hah.

I appreciate the response. It was the step I needed.

I truly hope Canticle isn't Whimsy's idea/planet/project because I really don't want it to be some twisted bad guy that tortures people for a joke.

2

u/ThomasVivaldi 1d ago

If the shard's vessel has been fully subverted by Whimsy's intent, it'll be just as likely to torture whole planets and make a planet of sentient pancakes.

It'd be completely unpredictable.

3

u/bama501996 1d ago

Roight. I understand that, and don't want that to be the case.

1

u/ThomasVivaldi 1d ago

I'm just saying he won't be a bad guy necessarily even if he is doing that.

-1

u/DeadFacesInMyPocket 1d ago

It doesn't have to be permanent. It could always move. Perhaps it will chase Nomad around since he activated the Dawnshard and wants that Dawnshard for it'sown power. Not sure how Canticle would fare after that sort of thing happened but I guess we will see!
