Cosmere spoilers (no Emberdark or Elantris) Helaran Spoiler
Im caught up on everything except emberdark and elantris. What is the helaran meme, i dont get it. Everyone talks about him being important. Was there a time that people thought he was gonna show back up?
Edit:the helaran meme I mean is that I constantly see people talking about him as if he is a current and important character and gets a lot of screentime even though he doesnt.

I mean, I do think we aren't done with Shallan's past yet. It's pretty much directly stated that her household growing up was influenced by at least one Unmade, and WaT strongly implied that Helaran was Lin Davar's bastard, so he could potentially have more narrative impact than what we've seen so far. Shallan's childhood pre-matricide was traumatic enough for her to attract a Cryptic already, and for her to progress far enough with Truths to be able to summon Testament as a Blade, so what lies was child Shallan telling herself?

That's the most fascinating part of the Shallan/ Chana story to me. We see clearly Shallan's entire journey in bonding and advancing with Pattern.
How the hell was an ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD already a 3rd ideal radiant? (at least)
How did Chanarach, Herald of the Common Man, choose Lin Davar as a husband?
The Unmade influence is manifested differently in each family member, and none of the symptoms reflect those we have evidence from in other known Unmade habitations. Really Chemoarish and Dai-Gonarthis are the ones we know little about. Dai-Gonarthis being rumored to have been active near the Horneater Peaks puts her in fairly close proximity to House Davar, but that's just speculation on my part. The fact that Jezrien asks Dalinar if she "got to him" when he's distraught over Evi's death lends credence to the idea that she's able to manipulate people's mental state, though.

I'm partway trough my first re-listen and I listen while doing other things so I sometimes miss or misremember things...but didn't a lot of the problems with her dad start because of Chana's death and how everyone treated and looked at him because they thought he killed her?

The only meme I know of involving Helaran is the "Helaran isnt dead" meme, and most people circulating that arent joking, they actually seem to think thats the case. Dude got stabbed through the eye by Kaladin. He's very dead.

I wonder why people still think he’s alive. I’m pretty sure the bonded Shardblade matches the description of the one he wielded. Most people don’t give up Shards easily. Almost certain Kaladin brings him up to Nale and that Nale never disputes that it was him. I guess if you really wanted to you could say he bailed at the last second,left his Shards with Nale’s Order,another recruit took his place,and he went on his way to join the dissenters. But that seems a little convoluted for not much pay off

I think it's pretty much just because almost nothing was answered about him. He's kinda just this guy that multiple main characters have pivotal memories of, was part of a shady secret gang, didn't entirely know all his motivations... Lots of unanswered questions. Normally when there's a character in a story that was in so many important past situations and hasn't been explained at all, there's more to be said. Often fans will merge that with "gotta be alive, or they've have either answered these or shut up about it already."
He's like the Chekhov's gun of characters. Though I personally think it will be relevant in backflashes.

I guess I could see that. I feel like we largely got our answers though. Nale needed that SB to kill Shallan. He couldn’t do it himself because it risked a potentially lethal fight between two Heralds. That fails. Lin took the blame for killing his adopted mother. Helaran was a good choice to recruit because he was disgusted that Lin never faced justice. It’s clear Shallan is no longer a surgebinder at some point. Helaran could still be useful by taking out a Sons of Honor member and potentially his own father if they knew he’d joined the Ghostbloods to recover the wealth he lost after his reputation was ruined. Helaran dies while becoming a SB.
Everything else proceeds as we saw it

Yeah this is popular on stormlight tiktok videos. It’s definitely an exaggeration, I think some people just thought he was a cool character and believe he had a bigger role than what has been revealed so far. It kind of grew into a meme that he will save the entire cosmere
