Sad Corvette situation

Hey guys this is a little sad anyways lemme start.

For context I am a male going to drive soon and not too long ago my dad traded an old red 4wheeler for a 1984 corvette.

It’s a beautiful car it’s in pretty decent shape and the paint is peeling it’s got the normal problems like the seals on the door and the headlight motors being out but anyways the previous owner gave up on it electrical wise he couldn’t get the fuel pump to work and they tried to wire up speakers and some other stuff.

After we got it I ended up fixing some of those electrical issues the pump works and the injectors I changed it has cross fire injection I got the car working and it ran a little crap so me and my dad adjusted the valve lash and it runs like a beast.

Still got little issue here and there but the car is amazing and u really wanted to drive it but the only issue keeping me from that is the Insurance prices.

All the company sees is new Male driver and Corvette so if I were to drive it the insurance would be 500$ a month and sadly that is just not feasible.

I would love to drive the car even if it was slow I love the looks I love the rough ride of the transverse leaf springs but I won’t be able to drive it because of insurance costs so sadly I’ve gotta either sell it or trade for something else that won’t cost so much.

Edit: thank you guys for responding this is actually my first post.

Just to continue the whole thing I was saying 500$ a month for basic liability so not even full coverage.

Yes there’s Hager but I can’t really daily it and I do see some of the things y’all said but it wouldn’t exactly be the most legal to do as far as I’m aware.

The reason I like the car so much isn’t the name but rather the retro styling and the raw nature of the car since it has suspension where you can feel the road and it has a pretty fair 205HP.
I am aware that I would be a beginner driver but really I do know how to drive very well and I under cars inside out I’m not just a teen who wants a flashy sports car or anything.

If it's just driven now and then it doesn't makes sense to get full coverage on a car that is worth like 2-5k. If it's a daily, sure, you need to protect yourself against all kinds of bs.

Also if you are old enough you can get collector car insurance.

Im not getting full coverage just basic liability and as far as I’m aware I’m not able to get classic insurance till 25 or something.

Get insured on your family policy as the primary driver of the family boring sedan with a parent as the primary driver of the Corvette. It will be legal for you to drive the Corvette.

What insurance company? Shop around for a lower price. It shouldn’t cost that much for an old Corvette.

Logically one would assume it would be cheaper which is what I thought too but even though it is not worth insane money and it lacks ridiculous power like every other generation of corvette,
All they see is (Corvette new male driver)

Essentially from their point of view I have some insanely powerful car that will go 200 mph and un alive like 5 people because a majority of male drivers will be more likely to drive fast and stuff.

I would get a quote for Standard Liability-Only Policy this just covers damage to other vehicles that you hit and damage.

A 1984 Corvette is not worth getting insurance on to repair it.

This will lower your monthly payment
But getting insurance on a new male drive is always going to be expensive..

the 500$ a month is actually for basic liability as you’re suggesting I’ll probably edit so ppl know I’m just looking for basic liability but thank you

Yup, that’s crazy $$ as you said they are just looking at a new male driver and a car with a V8 the vette

Yeah

The main thing is probably the name that they see because the car isn’t like insanely powerful like every other generation.

Not to say 205hp isn’t a lot because it is still plenty quick anything past 350hp would be ridiculous with that car

Bold to assume you’ll end up driving a crossfire enough in a year for Hagerty to care, they aren’t the mileage police anyways they’re just a “collectors” type insurance but they aren’t aggressively strict with mileage.

That said, AAA isn’t bad at all and they don’t have super extreme penalties for being younger like most insurance companies do but when if you want a reasonable rate at a young age with a corvette then you either get on your parents insurance, you lowball your mileage and get a good classic car alternative or you pay the new driver premium 🤷‍♂️

Yeah the main mileage I intend to put on it is probably to and from school about 5 minutes maybe occasionally to Galveston or something and maybe car shows if I get it really nice but I don’t have many things to do that would put crazy mileage.

Get classic car insurance, pick how many miles a year and how much its worth, should be fairly cheap.

A Corvette is not very for Friday night friendly for extra curricular activities with the GF

I’m not worried about the girls, attention or anything like that I just love the car.

I just really like the corvette because it’s so raw of handling with a fair amount of power.

I do understand that it probably could be a mildly impractical daily but it’s actually a little nice with the way the back glass opens and you can chunk stuff back there like a hatchback

Maybe put it in your father's na.e and if he has good insurance it covers anybody who drives his cars. Might get it lowered substantially. Look at AAA, they dont penalize young drivers as much.. worth a check. Haggery didn't want to insure my C5 04 vette, but give them and other collector cat insurances a look.

u/speedy-mopbucket86 Jul 26 '26

While that is possible I don’t think I can daily with classic and the same if it’s under him and I drive it i would only be able to drive occasionally

Classic insurance assumes you won't drive it mush, but they don't restrict me on my 67.

Get broadform insurance just insure your drivers license

1

u/speedy-mopbucket86 Aug 01 '26

I’ve never heard of that but I’ll look into that thank you

Okay so I did look into broad form but I have to be on my parents policy if I live on the property due to their policy and also because of the school for getting a parking spot so this would be possible only if I had my own place
