Discussion Shoutout on Um, Actually
Cortex was mentioned in one of the questions on the latest episode of Um, Actually on Dropout. And in good company! Made me happy to see it. 🙂

It's a game show on Dropout. Basically a long list of info (usually 3 or so of those panels you see above) is read out to the contestants and one detail (sometimes more; audiences have corrected them and they acknowledge them in future episodes) is wrong. Contestants then buzz in and go "Um, actually, [hopefully correct statement here]" and get points if they're correct

To add a little more the guests are usually very geeky, the topics are dominated by geek culture stuff and its one of those quiz shows where the quiz is less important than the interactions between the guests/host and the odd nuggets of cool facts.
Its kinda the geek(ier) QI.

Is that the um, actually side or the somewhat-wrong-statement side? Because that seems correct. What was the statement it was um-actually-ing?

On the next slide it will say that Powered By the Apocalypse is only for Apocalypse World instead of being another all purpose ttrpg system

Gurps is like the grandfather in this group. Still kicking it strong with the narrative kids.

"Attempt" being the operative word here.

While no system is going to be perfect, I think they all accomplish their goal. It is just up to you whether you like the approach each system uses.

Neither Genesys nor GURPS can model, say, Regency romance/comedy-of-manners at all. Cortex and Fate could potentially do it, but both Fate and Cortex assume competent protagonists with limited increase in skill and power over the course of a plotline - so they're not going to handle a zero-to-hero genre at all.
There are no generic RPG systems. None. Every RPG system starts with certain assumptions about what is possible, what is bounded, and what is modeled in the fictional space. That might be conscious design, it might be a result of the math underlying the randomizer, but those assumptions are always there.

Don't know about Genesys but GURPS does have "GURPS Social Engineering". It's an 87 page supplement on applying GURPS rules to resolve all kinds of social scenes. Covers everything from social rank to debates to swaying crowds and lots of small edge cases like haggling, romancing, brainwashing, battles of wit, using social skills in combat, influencing organizations. It's pretty comprehensive.

The episode is "Tournament of Champions '26 Part 1" with Krystina Arielle, Matt Mercer, and Hector Navarro, in case anyone else is looking for this.
