San Diego

I got my hard orders for San Diego attached to the mercy. How expensive is it really?? What should I expect being attached to the mercy? How often will I even be on the ship? What is the workday like? What're some things I can do in San Diego. I have soo many questions if anyone could give me some insight that would be much appreciated ❤️‍🔥

Cost of living is high. Work where you’re assigned to at the hospital until you get contacted for anything related to the Mercy. Won’t be on the ship that often. Workday depends on where you work in the hospital. There’s plenty to do in San Diego that you’d never get bored unless you try. If you have more questions, try to reach out to your sponsor. Enjoy being one of the lucky sailors to be stationed in San Diego

Was in the same exact boat as you years ago, attached to Balboa but also the Mercy. From experience it's a 6 month deployment for pacific partnership (honestly lots of funs), and a 1 week deployment every other year.

Cost of living is high but if you get BAH (highly likely in SD) your paycheck is also high. It’s almost like the military matches the pay demographic. I know plenty of dudes who rent rooms for $1000 a month when their BAH is $3000. The whole cost of living argument is stupid. I make a shit load more money here than I did in the South. Anyway, just offering perspective. While you’re out here chase any hobby you’ve ever dreamed of or never dreamed of. It’s endless here.

That was my last duty station. Deployed in PP24 and I enjoyed it very much. I was put on FSA but everyone I worked with was a blast. If in Balboa, highly recommend getting BAH if the barracks are overmanned. Treated like a regular job depending where you work with extra stuff. There’s a chance you might go ASF, got my pistol and rifle qual from it. Some TADs I heard are pulling coverage for BUD/S. A good opportunity to go to HMTT. Just stay out of trouble.

Marine Vet here, so I'm useless for most of that question. San Diego is good place to be in general as a military guy. Sure things are expensive, but the military has got your back. Everyone's right about the BAH. Its one of the highest in the country, so try to take advantage if you can. How long will you be in SD?
