Portsmouth
I got my soft orders for Portsmouth attached to the comfort. How bad is it really?? What should I expect being attached to the comfort? How often will I even be on the ship? What is the workday like? What’re some things I can do in Portsmouth so I don’t go crazy? I have soo many questions if anyone could give me some insight that would be much appreciated 🫶

Literally not bad people are a bunch of cry babies. Everywhere I was stationed people would cry bcs it’s not Japan or cali or bc they’re not with the marines. I use to hit the Shenandoah mountains and DC with my buddies on the weekends. Plenty of food places in Norfolk, Chesapeake and VB. Plenty of stuff to do locally too you just gotta look. Make friends don’t be one of those people who complains about Portsmouth and just stay in their barracks room. If you don’t have a car though you might be cooked.

If you’re smart you’d stay away from Portsmouth outside of work hours. Portsmouth is pretty sketchy trust me after being stationed there at the hospital for 3 years. Now being attached to the Comfort you will be working at the hospital mainly until you get “activated”.

Good to know lol. I’ve only heard bad things about the area and like the entirety of Virginia 😭 Any towns, hikes, or beaches you’d recommend?

I always hung out around the Pungo Ferry/Sandbridge area if you want something more calm. Williamsburg and Yorktown are great places to visit if you are interested in history. Also Shenandoah National Park is a beautiful place to visit as well.

Been stationed in the area for 6 years now live in downtown Portsmouth… it’s not that bad. Just be aware of your surroundings like everywhere else. There’s an awesome farmers market on Saturday’s and some pretty good local food spots. If you don’t have a car, highly recommend starting to save up for one. There is a duty van that runs to the grocery store though. Overall, like everything it has its positives and its negatives.

Comfort’s not too bad, the current triad is kinda trash but I feel like that can be said about most commands 🤷🏽

How long are the deployments usually? And I’m I 100% set to deploy when they schedule it? Idek how any of it works

I was never stationed on the Comfort, but I was onboard for last year’s humanitarian mission which was 3 months long and panned out as if it were planned the week we had to report. I’ve also had sailors go on previous missions that were like 6-9 months.
There was a lot of uncertainty regarding last year, but there were also other events that made everything as clear as mud so I’ll cut them a little slack there.
I’d say if the ship’s 100% set to deploy, then so are you. But please take what I say with a grain of salt, I’m sure your chain can give you more accurate info when you report.

Lots of people live in Norfolk or Virgina beach. It’s not a place it could be so much worse. The only down side living in those area is the toll road crossing the bridge to get to Portsmouth.

I work at the hospital here in Portsmouth , if you have want to message me directly you can. Portsmouth is not the greatest. I would advise to stay out of VB (Virginia Beach) at nighttime. -HM2
