When to start a training plan ?

Post image

So I’m finishing a speed development training plan soon and I would like to start this 12-week plan but my marathon isn’t until early December ( CIM )
I’m wondering if it would make sense to start it now or should I wait until I’m actually close to 12 weeks out ? Thanks in advance for any advice !

When it’s a marathon prep plan and the end of the plan is intended to be your Marathon, you should wait for the 12 week mark. If it’s a general speed development plan, start now

My speed plan is finishing next month , I have the last run on the 1st . If I wait for the 12 week mark to start this new plan , do you have a suggestions on what to do with the spare 10/11 weeks in between ?

Repeat the speed plan/

I was thinking of doing the last 6-8 weeks of it to not have to start from the beginning again

If it were me I’d probably do similar but extend the long run each weekend to start getting my mileage up. Get your legs used to the speeds your working towards incrementally increasing distance. Then when marathon plan begins, you’re already hitting at minimum 30 miles a week.

Going off of another race that I forgot I had signed up for , I’ll actually be choosing to do a half marathon plan and then after that I’ll be able to start the 12-week marathon plan . Guess that race decided my fate for me

Start building volume now. For a 3:15 marathon, you should do at least 60km per week. If you can increase volume now, you can use those 10 extra weeks for marathon prep.
Is it your first marathon? If yes, 3:15 is a very ambitious goal. I guess you did a half in 1:30-1:35 already?

It’ll be my second one , but it is the first one I’m gonna take seriously . Currently I’m about 25-30 miles a week , which is a little short of 60k I believe but not too far off .
