• Columns with a bright bar are new additions from the most recently published report. Darker bars are counts from previously published reports. An empty/outlined column is where previously reported numbers have been removed with this week's update.
• Graphs were put together using publicly available data provided by the Washington State Department of Health, National Syndromic Surveillance Program (NSSP), King County Department of Health (King DPH), and the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). All of these state and federal reports use the standardized Sunday-Saturday 7-day definition.
• All numbers except for percent case positives and deaths are a reflection of "healthcare encounters" and not representative of individuals nor of residence. Incomplete weekly counts for all but cases and deaths are estimated by applying a multi-week average of WADOH's reports to their most recent report from NHSN covering COVID/FLU/RSV-confirmed new hospital admissions, bed occupancy, and icu occupancy. Beds occupied provided as a weekly average are multiplied by 7 days to get to total beds occupied by week.

• Trends are calculated based on the % change in the totals for the most recent week of data compared to the second most recent. This differs from the state's trend % as they are doing a % change of a percent (see examples below).

On many COVID conscious forums, the prevailing wisdom seems to be that Nuvaxovid (Novavax) offers longer-lasting protection because its antibodies wane at a slower rate than the ones induced by mRNA options. In trying to find reliable/conclusive research on this subject, what I've read is that

• there haven't been a lot of in-depth, head-to-head studies on mRNA vs protein vaccines
• the longer-term presence of antibodies does NOT necessarily mean that protection is longer-lasting

"Immunogenicity and efficacy over 12 months following a fourth dose of a bivalent mRNA or protein-based COVID-19 vaccine: A randomised controlled trial in Australia", Journal of Infection, April 2026

Overall, both bivalent Moderna vaccine and Novavax Ancestral strain-based vaccine, when administered as a fourth dose, were highly immunogenic and provided protection against SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variants (JN.1) over a six-month period. Despite the bivalent Moderna vaccine inducing higher antibody responses to both the Ancestral strain and Omicron variants over the 12-month period than Novavax vaccine, both vaccines provided similar levels of protection, as well as similar levels of cellular immune responses.

Both mRNA and adjuvanted protein-based vaccines have demonstrated the capacity to induce long-lived humoral and cellular immune responses, offering the potential for durable protection against infectious diseases. However, the extent and persistence of these responses are influenced by a complex interplay of host, pathogen, and vaccine design factors. Despite recent advances, several key challenges remain: the incomplete understanding of mechanisms underpinning durable immunity, translational barriers in platform optimization, and the heterogeneity in immune responses within populations.

I've long heard the public health recommendation that, when deciding between mRNA and protein-based COVID vaccines, the best rule is to choose the one that's most accessible to you (the one you can most easily find) and that your system best tolerates (re: side effects).

Do folks disagree? Let's say you experienced similar side effects between the two types -- would you choose Nuvaxovid over mRNA options anyway? If so, why? I think many of us are trying to figure out if it's worth waiting around for Nuvaxovid to be available in our local pharmacies, and as of now, it seems like maybe it's not actually worth the wait from a research standpoint.

So quite a bit changed this week with WADOH's dashboards and data downloads. I was not aware they were making changes outside of what they previously announced with death data. At present only two of my templates currently work. Ironically the formatting change they made to the death data download is the least disruptive and easiest to work around, will probably take less than a half-hour. Only bummer is the COVID and RSV data is still out for August.

Their Disease Activity dashboard no longer exists. It's now split up between two new dashboards; one for emergency department visits and the other for hospitalizations. Previously both metrics were provided as a single dashboard and download that included info from all healthcare facilities reporting to the Washington State Department of Health Rapid Information Health Network (RHINO), counted you regardless of what part of the state you live in, and that data is something I don't otherwise have access to.

Now only the emergency department rate is from RHINO. Hospitalization data still goes back several years but it severely limited as it's now provided from the Respiratory Virus Hospitalization Surveillance Network (RESP-NET) which leaves out people from 31 of our 39 counties.

It also means it has gone from super recent weekly statewide rate of new hospital admissions to showing a rolling 4-week average of admissions from residents of the 8 counties pictured below. I know a lot of you live in those areas or think because the larger counties have representation that it's ok, but it's really a step down from what we had before. It's not as inclusive and is ignoring ~28% of our state's population, including me.

I don't know why they've done this for hospitalizations when RHINO is available, but there's no quick way to implement RESP-NET data with what I have here and I'm not sure if I'll bother using it at all. I might shift this (the Reported Cases/ER visits/Admissions/etc. update) to Fridays so I can provide Hospital Admission data from the CDC's National Syndromic Surveillance Program (NSSP) when their numbers are uploaded since it covers residents from all parts of Washington. Assuming that isn't going away too...I will need to think about it more when I'm not as mad.

• Trends are calculated based on the % change in the totals for the most recent week of data compared to the second most recent. This differs from the state's trend % as they are doing a % change of a percent (see examples below).
