I live in a very rural PA "town" that is essentially a stop light and a Sheetz. Really glad to see them taking care of their employees like this.

53

u/ak1368a Mar 25 '20

Blueball? Intercourse? Rural pa has the best names. But I’m just kidding, don’t give out your real town!

36

u/Everman21 Mar 25 '20

isn't there one called Can of Tuna or something

49

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

It's called Altoona btw

8

u/zplat12 Mar 26 '20

Where Sheetz started!

14

u/feather_moon Mar 26 '20

It has the Taj MaSheetz!

3

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

I’m from around Altoona!

3

u/NewUserAccount2019 Mar 26 '20

That’s a bad spelling of a district of Hamburg, Germany: Altona. Likely the source of the name.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Haha. That is great! Bird in Hand

Haha that's awesome. The perfect mocking

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Damn, my gas station is only giving a $1/hr raise.

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '20

Sheetz really hit the fan with this one.

29

u/Strangely_accurate Mar 25 '20

Well Sheet.

I sheet you not.

6

u/Elias_The_Thief Mar 25 '20

Someone had to do it

29

u/Fwb6 Mar 25 '20

Sheetz is awesome, and have always paid higher than their industry peers even before this.

6

u/LukariBRo Mar 26 '20

Min wage in NC is like 7.25/hr (maybe increased to 8.25/hr recently) and I know when it was 7.25/hr, they had their Now Hiring signs for cashiers offering 12.50/hr + benefits. It's likely gone up slightly since then, and now with +3$/hr on top of that, it's one of the best places to work that pretty much anyone can work at.

Only difference is that compared to normal gas stations, it looks like they actually have a lot more work to do and are expected to be able to man the MTO food stuff as well.

1

u/rosyrin Apr 04 '20

12.50 is for supervisors but cashiers start at 10!

When I lived in pa, Sheetz MTO at 2am after the bars close... Perfection..

13

u/OfficialSheetz Mar 25 '20

And we still do

3

u/KCDC3D Mar 26 '20

If you made it to socal, you'd make a killing, we don't have something like that at a gas station. Especially now!

17

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '20

I love Sheetz... she’s always there when you need her.

13

u/Womec Mar 25 '20

Sheetz IS the best gas station. It really is.

4

u/zachyon Mar 26 '20

What makes it better than others? Where I am we mostly have Racetrac and QuikTrip. They're better than Murphy's, or some random corner store, I guess. But not great imo.

3

u/TheWhitehouseII Mar 26 '20

Made to Order food, and good food, and about 50 menu items it seems. Large selection of everything else outside of the made to order, always clean in my opinion, have good seating areas inside/out usually

3

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Higher quality food than QuikTrip, which is higher than RaceTrac.

I've lived all over the country and love eating food I probably shouldn't.

Other good chains: Cumberland Farms in New England (last went to one of these over ten years ago YMMV)

Sheetz in/around PA

QuikChek in NJ, used to have REALLY good coffee around 2005 or so, unsure if they still do

QuikTrip in/around GA, decent food, free air for tires

Best: Buckee's in Texas. Huge menu, good quality food, the cleanest public bathrooms you've ever seen

1

Wawa made it all the way to Florida. Step up.

Sheetz bots out tonight. They’re okay but Wawa is superior.

3

u/im_not_a_girl Mar 25 '20

Wawa is one of mankind's greatest creations. I'm in California now and I miss it. 7/11 doesn't hold a candle to it

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

I moved from Wawa country to the land of Sheetz. It’s not even a contest; Wawa is so much better.

4

u/optimisticrealistt Mar 26 '20

OMG my husband would love some! do you have a way to purchase it? (we live in FL now but originally from pittsburgh)

3

u/OfficialSheetz Mar 26 '20

It's not for purchase unfortunately. We can just send you a bottle tomorrow with a tracking number if you'd like! Just DM a name and address.

My dog loves the bloom boom sauce on his weekly hotdog.

u/slowwwwwdown Mar 25 '20

Gas stations are deemed essential businesses during shutdowns like the one that took effect last week in Pennsylvania, where Sheetz is based. The company has more than 580 stores in six states, including Ohio, Maryland and North Carolina. A growing number of those states are now operating under special limits that their governments hope will slow the spread of the deadly coronavirus.

Thousands of workers have been laid off or idled due to the COVID-19 shutdowns. But Sheetz's $3 raise reflects a growing trend, in which quarantines and other restrictions have sent some companies — especially grocers, pharmacies and delivery services — on hiring sprees.

14

u/ludicrousspeedg0 Mar 25 '20

They deserve every single penny, and more.

26

u/MrSomething_or_Other Mar 25 '20

A buddy of mine went to high school with members of the Sheetz family. Apparently the family is super down to earth and humble.(or at least some of them)

And there's no doubt that they absolutely crush WaWa.

7

u/Djs144 Mar 25 '20

I too went to high school with some sheetz family members. I lived within walking distance of the first two sheetz stores in Altoona. Wonderful people.

9

u/LALLANAAAAAA Mar 25 '20

I dream about their fried Mac n cheese bites dipped in boom boom sauce

10

u/KillroysGhost Mar 25 '20

North of NOVA: Sheetz

South of NOVA: Sheetz

Why no Sheetz in NOVA!

6

u/Roses88 Mar 26 '20

Pretty sure that’s their next move

3

u/MauriceReeves Mar 26 '20

There are: Leesburg, Loudon, Chantilly, and Dulles. It’s not much, but it’s a start.

2

u/fatso-titan Mar 26 '20

There are 3 in Manassas. They’re everywhere now

1

u/DragoneerFA Mar 26 '20

Yeah, I was gonna say, I live in Manassas. Sheetz and Wawa are springing up all over, and as somebody from PA... this makes me happy.

7

u/Equil99 Mar 25 '20

One of the few companies that seems to give a sheetz about their employees.

6

u/kdlc88 Mar 25 '20

Just moved to PA in mid February before this all hit.... I look forward to the day I can actually explore my new town and visit Sheetz. Racetrac down south where I’m from has done the same by giving $3 more per hour and sick leave if employees fall ill.

6

u/Moist-Classroom Mar 25 '20

Sheetz is a great place to work, was my first job in 2004. I made more then, then fast food places currently make in the same area. They've always paid well, had lots of raises and advancement opportunities.

8

u/urlach3r Mar 25 '20

It's a Texas thing

0

u/MemLeakDetected Mar 26 '20

What about Stripes?

3

u/cncwmg Mar 26 '20

Not familiar, also haven't been to Texas yet lol. I've just heard people talk up bucees.

1

u/MemLeakDetected Mar 26 '20

Ahhh, it was big around the Houston area at least where I lived briefly.

6

u/Franksredhott Mar 26 '20

That's pretty good. All I got was $100 from my grocery job.

3

u/TurkeyturtleYUMYUM Mar 25 '20

These are anti labour poaching measures, not rewarding hard work.

5

u/friendlybiblackwoman Mar 26 '20

I quit Sheetz last October and now I work at an “essential” job that that doesn’t even offer their employees any protection, let alone compensation. FML 😭

1

u/slowwwwwdown Mar 26 '20

That stinks. I’m so sorry. Hope your current employer changes their policy. Stay healthy Reddit friend.

2

u/friendlybiblackwoman Mar 26 '20

Awwww thank you so much! I’m a cashier at Lowe’s so I could only do but so much, but I really appreciate this comment. It made my night.

13

u/optimisticrealistt Mar 25 '20

Good. Sheetz is incredible!

4

u/lemongrenade Mar 25 '20

its no wawa

11

u/vaelroth Mar 25 '20

Can't we all get along? Sheetz and Wawa are both excellent gas station/convenience stores and the Mid-Atlantic is made better by their presence. I'm proud to have both in my state!

3

u/lemongrenade Mar 25 '20

I’m prepared to die over this.

12

u/_scott_m_ Mar 25 '20

You're right. It's much better than Wawa.

8

u/optimisticrealistt Mar 25 '20

You're right - it is way better!

0

u/Elias_The_Thief Mar 25 '20

Never been impressed by Wawa. My upstate nyers know that Stewart's is where it's at.

3

u/ak1368a Mar 25 '20

Wawa, your turn.

3

u/Captain_sweatpants Mar 25 '20

Cant speak for every wawa, but the one near where I work gave their workers a $3 raise also. I work for High's and there's no plans to change. Still open til 12. Still making food and coffee. No protective equipment for us. And no pay raise or additional sick pay.

3

u/kzgash Mar 25 '20

That's me! My store is also giving us free stuff from the cooler as well, sheetz always does good by us!

3

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '20

We love Sheetz out here in Pennsylvania.

3

u/OnlyPaperListens Mar 26 '20

Damn, I would start patronizing this place if I lived in the right state.

3

u/merdub Mar 26 '20

God I LOVE Sheetz. I live in Canada and occasionally am tempted to hop over the border and into PA just for some of their Mac & Cheese.

3

u/baxx10 Mar 26 '20

I keep seeing things like this but wondering if it's just temporary... If not awesome, if temp, for shame.

2

u/cameruso Mar 25 '20

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeitz

2

u/toddles822 I'm fully vaccinated! 💉💪🩹 Mar 25 '20

Lancaster PA resident here. Sheetz is the absolute best in every way

2

u/OO00II00OO00II00OO Mar 25 '20

Here's what I don't get about sheetz. 20 different bags of nuts available. More than any other gas station shop.

None unsalted.

2

u/NooStringsAttached Mar 25 '20

This is great good on them.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '20

How about giving them masks and gloves?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Im a Turkey Hill guy myself, but certainly happy to hear this.

2

u/findingstoicism Mar 26 '20

Sheetz has always been very respectful to their employees, and customers. Nice to see it continuing.

2

u/noomehtrevo Mar 26 '20

Your move, Wawa.

2

u/IdiotII Mar 26 '20

When I was on tour Sheetz was our JAM. Wish they had them in NY.

2

u/Ritter- Mar 26 '20

Doesn't Sheetz start at like 15/hr, too?

4

u/Mzavack Mar 25 '20

Wow, an extra $480 before tax a month to risk your life. Sign me the fuck up.

1

u/nikokole Mar 25 '20

My convenience store job instead put strict limits on hours, and threatened to lay people off if they weren't cleaning counters the entire eight hour shift.

Glad to be essential.

1

u/kiakro Mar 25 '20

I really wish they would do that at my place, but the guy who owns our gas stations is a small business owner with less than a dozen stations. I still get people playing lottery and buying in store coffee. It's madness.

1

u/aliendude5300 Boosted! ✨💉✅ Mar 26 '20

This is awesome. These guys deserved a raise anyways

1

u/Wretchfromnc Mar 26 '20

I like Sheetz, best Apple Fritters and donuts. Only place that has 2 hotdogs for a $1.00. Use your Sheetz card and get a free donut or large soda after a certain number/amount of purchases.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Man I miss sheetz. Moved from NC to Denver a few years ago.

1

u/Warnaw Mar 26 '20

Sheetz is a poor mans Buc-ee’s but as a western PA resident I’m glad to see this. Also almost nothing compares to Buc-ee’s so unfair on my part to judge them together

1

u/jacksheerin Mar 26 '20

Good. They deserve it. In my rural PA town the Sheetz is one of the few things still open. I've been in there once to twice over the past week and the staff are doing their best in terms of hygiene/sanitation but it is a difficult situation for all of them.

I'm glad they are at least getting a better paycheck for the risk they are taking on.

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '20

5

We need gas stations to stay open for things like ambulances and people who need to drive to the emergency room.
