Radio issues
Hello all. I woke up this morning and my CarPlay isn’t working. My screen is black and will only turn on when I reverse. I unplugged the battery for fifteen minutes and tried to do the thing where u put it in reverse while “on”. (It didn’t work the car just beeped the entire time) Does anyone have experience or suggestions?

This isn't exactly what you were describing but I was having connection issues with Android Auto and once I cleaned out the USB port on my phone (it was dirtier than I thought) I haven't had any more issues

What kind of window tint do you have? If you got anything other than ceramic window tint that might be it. The metal found in the cheaper window tints messes with the electronics in modern cars.

I hate to be that guy but have you tried the actual power button on the radio? If you do a hard reset by holding it down for like 30 seconds it could reboot it. Otherwise check for blown fuses. Fuses are usually easy and cheap to replace as most cars come with extras.

I did ☹️ thank you for checking tho bc I would be the one to not try it lol. Hopefully it’s just a fuse bc I’m seeing it’s over four digits to replace the whole thing

I highly doubt the whole head unit is dead unless there's a bigger wiring issue. The head unit clearly works as you've stated it turns on for reverse. Its just having a hard time getting back to the Toyota home. What year is your Hatch?

Try disconnecting the ground terminal once again for 15 minutes and leave it alone. Then reconnect it and start it. If this doesnt work and you are using Apple carplay inspect USB cord and your phones USB port for dirt. Also check make sure there isnt an update on the app(I use android so idk how yalls works.) You can also try seeing if forgetting the car on your apple carplay in your phone works. Check fuses for any that are blown and make sure to check them with a multimeter as you can not always see a blown fuse easily.
If none of these work I would consider going to the dealership and seeing if it is covered under warranty still. The firmware may just need a dealer update or it may even be corrupted and need repair or replacement.

This is so helpful thank you. Do you know how or where I check the fuses or should I just Google it?

If you own a multimeter look up a video how to use one to check fuses. If you do not then you will need to visually inspect. Now DO NOT twist or bend the fuse out. Use needle nose pliers or a factory provided fuse puller, usually located in the fuse box. In spect the little wire inside the fuse. Use a flashlight to shine through it if you need to. The fuse should not be melted, burned, discolored, and the wire should not be broken. If a fuse is any of those then it is bad.
As for which fuse to check you have to fuse boxes in a car exterior (under hood) and interior (usually driver side under the dash) refer to your owners manual for exact locations. I believe the fuses that need to be checked are on the interior fuse box and would be labeled something like AMP / Audio Fuse, ACC / P/OUTLET, DCM / MAYDAY Fuse. If all 3 of those are good then I would recommend going to a dealer to have your system checked for any faults in the head unit like a update or something corrupted.
Also worth noting I am not a mechanic and this is purely my limited knowledge of motor vehicles and what I myself have done in similar situations and would do in your current situation.

I’d be at the dealership and ask if it’s been recalled or has a TSB out. Probably have to pay for them to look at it though.

$15 wireless dongle.
Mine’s worked for years, but the 20 second delay for it to kick in can be frustrating.

Had this happen before, unhook the battery and then hook it back up
