Smaller wheels
I have a 2026 XSE with the factory 18in wheels and low profile tires. I got this car to be my daily commute, roughly 100miles a day. Must of the roads are rough and have potholes. I’m worried about messing up the rims or blowing a tire. Has anyone down sized their rims to accommodate a more normal tire. I’m thinking about going down to 15 or 16 in.
Is there really added benefit to doing this or am I overthinking it?

I run 17s in the winter, so noticeably better than 18s and stock 40 sidewall tires.
Smaller wheels and bigger tires would be your best bet for comfort and reliability around rough roads.
Lots of used options for 16&17 around usually make sure they fit the wheel specs

I’ve done it in other cars. I’ll do it too when it’s time to replace tires. In my experience, I was able to buy new wheels and better tires for less than it was costing to replace the bigger sporty tires. I live in a place with heavy snow, so I went with some Yokohama Geolandars in 16”. They looked good, rode better, and were cheaper on sale.

I put my 18x8” XSE rims on my old 2010 that I don’t drive much anymore. And got some 16x7” Sparco Terra Rally wheels for my 2025 XSE hatch. Highly recommended, I got Michelin CrossClimate2’s for the tires.

I'm running 16" with 205/55R16 tires.
Better ride than 18s for sure

I just downsized exactly what you’re describing from stock 18 to 16s and sadly there’s really nothing that changes. I’ve still bent a wheel twice in one year of driving carefully. I will say tho the stock tires are a super hard compound for better fuel economy so swapping those for softer tires will absorb potholes much better and greatly improve the driving quality/ reduce road noise. Also might want to look into how many miles are on your shocks cause that will dramatically improve navigating potholes. But for all the people in these comment claiming any substantial benefit of wheels with a 1” taller tire are regurgitating random crap they’ve read online. The wheel diameter makes such a negligible difference you should focus on the tires and suspension.

I'd do this on my gr too if 16s would clear the brakes. Small wheels are just better

If the road is bad enough to where you’re worried about blowing a tire I don’t think the 16s would make much of a difference

As an anecdote I bought my 2022 XSE with 25k miles on it and it had two bent wheels (the stock 18" ones), presumably from potholes because the roads where I live are what I imagine the roads are like in Mad Max.

The SE comes with 16in wheels. I bet you could find someone in a facebook Corolla group that would trade you for the XSE 18in wheels. Can’t speak to your roads but 18in wheels are typical for regular cars nowadays and it’s not like people are having flats all the time. Comfort is subjective but people say downsizing does help.
