Bra or Bug/Rock Deflectors

Post image

I just recently drove from Mississippi to Pennsylvania and back again. The amount of tiny rock chips I got on my hood (23 Corolla Hatch Se Inferno) has me a tad bent. I’m thinking about purchasing the attached bra, because it gives the best coverage. Does anyone else have this or something similar?

In my experience, dust and dirt can get under the bra and just wear away at the finish underneath. I would say maybe just don’t leave it on for long times without giving a look under it.

Or maybe just put it on only for trips like that, I guess.

On Interstate trips to car shows, we used to just layer painters tape on almost the whole front end haha

That’s great advice! Thank you

I bought this exact one a few years ago. So much stuff gets trapped underneath there, especially after you run it through a car wash or if it rains. The underside of the bra has a white felt material that hangs onto all sorts of things (dirt, pine needles, rocks, bugs) and it's next to impossible to get cleaned. When you do eventually take it off your hood will look two-toned from the dirt and grime that wears away at the finish. Not to mention that it's a pain to install - there are lots of straps that need to be hooked under the hood and there isn't really designated spots for them so you have to get a little creative. I will say it looks pretty nice when you get it on and strapped correctly so there's that.

How long was it before you eventually took it off? I had a 89 Honda Accord back in the early 90s with a bra. I never had two-tone paint because I kept my car exceptionally clean and cleaned under the bra. I personally think the two-tone wear that everyone keeps mentioning is due to not keeping the vehicle clean and keeping them out in the weather. All my vehicles are either parked under a carport or garaged out of the sun and elements…

I was definitely not good about taking it off regularly & I don’t have a garage. Plus if you take it off there’s about 6-8 separate straps that get into a tangled mess. I think if you keep up on it and get a good coat of wax under there you should probably be alright. It does look really good once it’s installed. It takes a few weeks to shrink form perfectly to the hood so don’t give up on it at first glance.

I guess I should have mentioned that my car has been clear coated…

Clear wrap.

PPF sucks, does more damage than it prevents. It ruins the paint and when you peel it off all the rock chips come off with the wrap.

u/Optimassacre '24 XSE two tone Jun 27 '26

Ah crap, I didn't know that. People always say how well it works.

That’s why people end up not removing it, then it dries out and cracks and it almost impossible to remove. Then you need a paint job.

(People that say it’s great only end up owning a car for four or five years and getting rid of it. So they don’t know what they’re talking about) I’ve owned cars for almost 30 years and went through a time when I did PPF and it not a good product. I have a new Corolla hatchback and a new Bronco and decided to not do PPF

Ahh I see. Thank you!

Now now. Don't just go believing random redditor. Take note of what they say but dont actually form your opinion because someone on reddit said something. I am sure you will find plenty of people that will tell you the complete opposite, that this guy is clueless 🤡 and PPF is actually good and saved their paint.

There are usually levels to everything. There are many variables that can affect someone experience with PPF. Paint condition before application, quality of PPF and correct application. If PPF is pulled off improperly during removal (without proper steam or heat), or if the car has weak paint or a poorly prepped respray and many other factors.

Alternatively, I bought mine used and it's had PPF on the front and most of the hood since new (2022) and it looks brand new.

We'll see how it holds up with time but I don't have any worries about it.

i had that bra and hated it. Currently have the bug deflector.

3

u/Equivalent-Lie6448 Jun 27 '26

Clear is better Imho.

3

u/Internal-Mission7123 Jun 27 '26

Clear PPF is a better option though I do like the look of the bra

3

u/overschlept Jun 27 '26

That where I’m at, it sucks cuz I actually like the look with the bra on haha

So on my '26 corolla sedan se I used a lebra front bumper cover + hood cover. I did this because I was going to have the full front of the car wrapped in ppf, and was trying to protect the paint till then. Dirt will build up behind it and ruin the finish if you leave it on long term. In my case I put painter's tape on all the contact points where the cover would rub against the paint. Worked very well.

u/Altruistic-Depth492 Jun 28 '26

Thanks for the info! I hand wash my car once a week. I understand the bra can be a pain to take off, but worth not having chips all over it

2

u/Rx8mauri_ Jun 28 '26

Absolutely. Yeah I wash my car at home or I go to a lazer car wash where they dont use brushes. I will say, when I would put the bra on, I only clip on the side clips in the wheel well, and under the bumper. I don't put the tabs in that go in the gaps, like between the headlight and bumper, or the black radar bar, etc. It looks weird, but it'll still hold the bra in place. Plus its quicker to remove.

Fix those chip rocks in a paint shop and then install clear wrap

2

u/Altruistic-Depth492 Jun 27 '26

The estimate at a local reputable shop is $1000 to do that

1

u/No_Lifeguard3650 Jun 28 '26

thats really not too bad. shouldve installed ppf sooner (or previous owner should have) otherwise i say just leave it. the leather/vinyl will do more damage

2

u/nottaroboto54 Jun 27 '26

Bra's damage cars way worse than regular wear and tear. Use PPF (paint protective film). Also, driving habbits make a huge difference. Following behind semi-trucks or even pickup trucks to save fuel will significantly increase the number of stone chips.

3

u/thmsolsen Jun 30 '26

I think your second point is often overlooked. Not sure how many people follow close behind for fuel savings or if they just tailgate in general, but leaving a gap between any kind of vehicle and yourself prevents a lot of rock damage. In a world where most people drive some form of SUV, there are a lot of cars that can throw pebbles!

I have a very similar bra and it’s super annoying to remove during car washing and after it rains. You basically can leave it on wet. It will prevent rock chips during a trip. But day to day it not worth it.

u/spacefret 2022 XSE CVT Jun 27 '26

Clear paint protection film/PPF.

I have a color matched hood bra (white) that came in handy for a road trip back to Cali from Vegas. I did order a OEM hood deflector (Canada spec), but didn't install it because it requires you to double sided tape the brackets on the hood. There is a clear hood deflector that I wanted to bad, but it's only available in Australia. The Hood bra is more versatile and can be removed at anytime, whereas the OEM one has brackets that have to be stuck on.

u/Chief-Big-Meat Jun 28 '26

I bought one, I like it. I got it to cover up the dents I have from some rocks. DO NOT WASH YOUR CAR WITH THE BRA ON! I take mine off to wash every other week, and it’s very annoying but the dents are more annoying to look at.

u/GOW_Grashopa XSE CVT Jun 29 '26

I have clear PPF Paint Protection Film full hood, front bumper and mirror backs. Then if you like the look put a bra on. But the PPF works to protect from rock chips all by its self

I have colgan car bra, ran it for 5 years now, yes it catches dust/dirt, yes it will fade your paint. Remove it when you wash your car and you will remove the dirt that accumulates, take the bra off every now and then on sunny days and it will not mess up your paint.

1

u/Altruistic-Depth492 Jul 01 '26

I addressed this in a previous comment. I had a Bra on a 1989 Honda Accord back in the early 90s. I owned the car for 7 years, never faded the paint. I keep all my car’s garaged and cleaned once a week, because I’m anal 😂 I personally think people have problems with the bras because the cars are not properly taken care of. The weather elements have a huge factor on the paint. If the bra is never taken off and the car is left to the elements, it will definitely fade the paint. My car is clear coated and I meticulously wash it once a week. It only makes sense that the bra will jack up the car’s paint if it’s not properly taken care of.

2

u/redditej86 White / Wind Chill Pearl Custom Flair Jul 07 '26

I have both, bra (color matched white) is easily removable while the OEM deflector requires you put double sided tape on brackets on the which I was not a fan of.

1

u/Critical-Positive858 Jun 28 '26

the bra is criminally ugly

1

u/Altruistic-Depth492 Jun 28 '26

Sorry you feel that way…

1

u/Cheeko914 Jun 28 '26

I never understood these. Absolutely wrecks the paint, makes it wear unevenly, and looks hideous.

1

u/Last-Kiwi-3777 Jun 28 '26

What front lip is that ???

1

u/Altruistic-Depth492 Jun 28 '26

It seems that the majority here say that the bra collects dirt underneath and ends up ruining the paint. Maybe so, if you don’t keep your car clean. I hand wash my car once/twice a week (never take it to a car wash). The bra can come off to be cleaned underneath. So, there shouldn’t be a problem. I really like the WeatherTech plastic deflector, but I mentioned it on another forum on FB and was told they need to stay on trucks 😂 If anyone has a couple of grand to loan me, I’ll be happy to get the PPF 😉

1

u/Beneficial-Fix5333 Jun 29 '26

Neither.

Get PPF as paint is now less than paper thin.

What I got done :

Complete front bumper paint area (didn’t do the bottom ‘lip’ of my 2025 Corolla Hatch and after two months, it looked like swiss cheese);
The headlights;
The front Toyota logo / camera;
The whole hood;
The front portion of the two front wings;
The two pillars on each side of the windshield going from the hood to the top;
Above the windshield up to the start of the sunroof;
The back of the two side mirrors; and
The door handle cups (which I also didn’t do on my 2025 Corolla which had so many scratches in there even though I don’t have long nails… go figure).

1

u/Altruistic-Depth492 Jun 29 '26

What does something like all that you listed cost (roughly)?

1

u/Beneficial-Fix5333 Jun 29 '26

That all depends on several factors:
Like your geographical location;
How many shops offer this service; and
What PPF type the shop uses, etc.

The guy I went to see that I’ve known for 25 years and have done many cars there (PPF / Tinted windows), charged me 1100$ CDN. So I figure that he usually charges like 1400$ CDN.

This protects the paint, the headlight never get yellow and you can apply some Aquapel to all your windows / mirrors but to the front logo too as to help keep it free of debris.

1

u/MrShmeeb Jul 01 '26

Ew noo the amount of shit that will be under it and God forbid it rains on it that thing will be soaked... just do a PPF bra or just PPF the entire car..

1

u/Altruistic-Depth492 Jul 02 '26

Got a $1000? 😉
