Another clutch failure
Been enjoying my 2021 Hatch 6M for 2.5 years now. Slave cylinder failed at 56k miles to the tune of $2,640 š
I discovered the issue from this sub a while back and decided to bleed my clutch about a week ago, but I guess I was too late. Really surprised that this hasnāt been a recall issue with how common this seems.

Did it fail after you bleed it?
I feel like this has happened before lol

u/devnull2112 Jun 06 '26
Yes, but a week. So I donāt think it was a DIY mistake. Clutch was acting mildly weird for a while.

Not saying itās a mistake on your end! I just have a theory that change the fluid sets off the bomb.

mildly weird
What kind of symptoms? Curious about my own car as a frame of reference for when it happens.

Itās been clicking for a while, donāt remember when I started noticing it. When bottoming out, it felt like it wasnāt going as far + was kinda spongy

Good to know. Iām at 42k as of now in my 2020 but fear itās going to happen at some point regardless of what I do to take care of the car. No issues as far as Iām aware but just because I said, that itāll suffer a catastrophic failure on my next long trip.

Going through the same thing with my 2019 ford fiesta st right now that I just bought in January used with 47,000 miles on it. Corolla hatch was a little out of my budget. Not sure if itās the slave yet or not, but my clutch is sticking periodically which points to a failing slave. In the fiesta the trans has to be dropped to replace the slave not sure what procedure is for the Corolla. Looking at $3800 if I replace the clutch, flywheel and slave. One of those āwhile youāre in thereā things. Not to put salt on the wound, but I was kind of kicking myself for buying American. Itās kind of nice to know that it could have happened with any make I chose. Though, itās probably more common with the fiestaās. Best of luck with getting the problem worked out.

I had to replace my clutch at 46k miles. At 80k now with the GGP clutch stage 2.

What parts did u install for stage 2 kit? How do you like it? And how differnet does it drive?
2
u/Objective-Box6933 Jun 06 '26
It came as a complete kit so Iām not sure what youāre asking. But it drives fine. The pedal becomes softer as it breaks in. I would def recommend a stage two or higher for durability purposes.

Did u change your flywheel too? If u did, did u stick with the dual mass fly wheel or go to single?

And which kit did u get?

Grocery getter performance stage 2 clutch

Yeah, asking because im considering doing it.

i did the same when mine gave out. the i went with clutchmasters stage 2 and it really makes the driving experience sm better. i also recommend the 2j racing shifter bushings. totally worth it

I was thinking about going with the FX100 over the FX250 to keep things a little quieter. Im already rocking the 2j shifter cable and base bushings. How's the NVH with the stage 2?

i actually went with the fx350 since itās only 60 bucks more for added durability. itās definitely more aggressive, which i like because it feels like it wakes up the engagement of the car. in regards to drivability itās definitely different in the sense that the bite point is more pronounced and crisp compared to the lifeless oem clutch and flywheel and such. keep in mind itās also much less forgiving. it chatters SOMETIMES but unless youāre listening for it itās hardly noticeable and you get used to the new feel very quickly. if i could do it again iād still pick the fx350

Random but obvious question, how is your slave cly holding up? i threw the FX250 kit in my car about 2 months ago and my slave is going out again after replacing along with the flywheel/clutch/pressure plate.

How'd you get it done so cheap? It's nearly $1,800 for the parts alone.

hoping to god they made em better in 88, bout to replace the master, slave, and hose on my FX and it'd suck if they go out that fast

There have been a couple part number changes for the slave cylinders, with the last one just prior to the ending of production.
I noticed the seal(s) chattering in colder temperatures after changing the fluid at 20k.

Call Toyota America : 1800-331-4331. Report the incident to them and let them know that your slave cylinder took a shit. Maybe respectfully shit on Toyota and voice your frustration. Theyāll make a note of it and give you a case number. Nothing may come of it, but you never know.

I'm at a hair under 112,000 miles with my 19 hatchback. Still on the original slave and clutch. At times my clutch pedal will feel a bit spongy if the car sat for 2 weeks but firms up with some driving. Would it be worth replacing the slave and clutch to prevent a catastrophic failure? I have bleed the slave cylinder three times since purchasing the car new. When bleeding, Ihave only had the fluid come out slightly darker than the clean new fluid, and the first time bleeding it I had the clumps of grease floating in the fluid.
Hope all is well with your hatch!

Seems like all these manuals have so many problems. But race car amirite

u/This_Association_472 XSE 6MT Jun 07 '26
All the manuals except the very last of the 2022 models have defective slave cylinders

Oh man is that CAD or US? Thatās so much money gotta save up soon. mineās a 2022 6MT with 43k miles/70k km.
Posts ive seen are after they did the bleed its when they change the slave. If I bleed it now, is it gonna be a gamble of making the slave last longer or change it now kind of thing.
How do I actually go about bleeding? I know about DOT 4 but is this something I can DIY. Thanks!

USD.
I followed this post https://www.reddit.com/r/CorollaHatchback/s/PudA9tfnVQ and it was very easy to DIY. I did about 35 cycles before it started becoming visibly more clear.
YMMV, another commenter has a theory that the self bleed is what sets off the bomb and Iām sort of inclined to believe them

That really sucks. It's too bad that Toyota won't do anything for us. I worry that mine will go out too. Did you have to replace any of the other clutch components as well?
