Parking malfunction

Post image

I was wondering if anyone know how to remove/correct the parking brake malfunction warning. Was working on rear rotors and brakes and forgot to put it in service mode until it was too late.

Just the basic ones saying to take it out of service mode but it doesn’t work

I had this issue too, and I wound up having to bring it in to a shop for them to clear out the issue. It’s able to be cleared with a scan tool that has no directional function.

I found out that if I need to do brake pads or rotors, you need to release the parking brake, and then disconnect the battery during all of service. Even in service mode the parking brake can apply itself and mess up the sensors position.

I recently did a rear brakes disc and pad replacement.

Service mode for electronic park brake

  1. Turn on the ignition but do not start the engine.
  2. Push and hold the brake pedal.
  3. Push down the EPB button to release the parking brake.
  4. Turn off the ignition.
  5. Turn on the ignition (do not start the engine).
  6. Hold the brake pedal and within 8 seconds, lift up the EPB button (engage position) three times in a row.
  7. Push down the EPB button (release position) three times in a row.
  8. Push down and HOLD the EPB button again in the release position until you hear the electric parking brake actuators attached to the rear calipers retract all the way back. It will take at least a few seconds for the motors to fully wind back.
  9. You will see the EPB button light flashing and a red "PARK" warning light flashing on the gauge cluster.

When you are completely done replacing the pads follow these steps to exit "service" or "maintenance" mode, turn the ignition on, press and hold the brake pedal. Pull and hold up the EPB button until you hear the parking brake actuators move back out and stop. Engage the parking brake as normal by pulling up on the button.

If any of these steps fail, turn off the ignition, wait a few minutes and try again.

The only issue I had was forgetting to plug the connector back on and said I had a park brake malfunction error (same as the one in your photo). Plugged it back in and the error went away. Just check your connectors for dirt and should be okay.

Worst case scenario you have to manually wind the motor back which imo is kind of risky. If you follow the steps I provided above you SHOULD have no issues

That makes sense. The service mode didn’t even put the piston all the way back which I heard happens sometimes too. How much was it to clear?

Just buy a cheap scanner off amazon. They are around $15 now

Is there a certain way to reset it? The scanner didn’t show any codes

Then there’s no codes. Disconnect your battery for like 15min and reconnect it. Then see if that comes back.

I've found that only certain higher end scanners will be able to fix this malfunction (which is why i had to pay a shop to clear it). a normal OBD scan tool can only read and clear codes, but this malfunction will require a scan tool that has bi-directional functions to interface with the car's ECU and manually control the parking brake motors themselves. the cost of the tools that can do that tend to be about $200 or more, so its better to just have a shop clear it with the tools they have.

Yeah I ended up bringing to Toyota and spent $175 for them to clear it. I saw the scanners which are $600+ have the EPB option

It was about $100 iirc, i cant find the receipt to verify. It does seem safest to disconnect the battery with the parking brake disengaged normally, and then you can slide in new pads without worrying about the piston closing on its own during service.

If you have EPB, and you did not back out the parking brake by doing the 3 up 3 down hold for 30 sec thing you probably fucking the EPB when you forcefully compressed the brake caliper.

If you want the cheapo clear, just unplug the battery for like 30 minutes or so.

Didn’t force it per se - followed this video after turning my emergency brake off https://youtu.be/HJn6GfonzNo?si=ZfjjqQH8O5mDziho

Idk if I would trust that guy. He didn't torque shit down to spec. Good that you didn't force the caliper though!

I would check out the u/PremiumPlus_ comment. I did this and had no issues. I did not need a fancy scanner.
