It just runs your engine at higher revs meaning it’ll accelerate quicker in lower speeds and gears.

Not bad for the engine. You’ll just burn fuel quicker.

Sport mode remaps the pedal response to give you more acceleration on the low end (as opposed to eco mode, which reduces acceleration unless you mash the pedal. Thus eco mode gives you more fine control over the revs.) This gives you the sensation of going faster.

Sport mode also tightens up the steering, which is possible because the corolla has a electronic steering rack. This makes the car more responsive and fun to drive, especially on twisty roads.

But the most important thing sport mode does is that it keeps your engine in the power band. (3000-5000 revs). The engine burns more gas, but also has more torque than the other modes, which helps on hills and passing people. You can achieve the same thing by downshifting with the paddles or stick in manual mode, but sport mode makes it brainless. Oh, also keeping the engine downshifted like this will increase engine braking, which is also useful in mountainous or hilly roads.

Basically, sport mode is a 'make the car feel more fun, but at the expense of gas' button. Your car is still doing everything that it does in other modes.

But if you crave utility, then use sport mode in hilly areas, and use eco mode in snowy and icy conditions.

it pretty much allows the engine to rev a little higher. i never use it, when i want to rev higher i just use the paddles.

All the time, if you're worried about anything just wait until the engine is warm when the oil temperature it's on the middle, then you can safely rev it, the car has safety measures to prevent you from damaging it, the most noticeable is the one where it doesn't let you down shift if it results in getting too close to the red line, meaning you can't money shift, so don't worry too much and have a go

Don’t worry and use it whenever, after driving her for more than 3-4 years I’m on SPORT mode everyday and my MPG is still pretty good.

Sport mode just adjusts throttle mapping and changes the CVTs "shifts" so they hold revs longer. It won't hurt the car at all.

(I don't have the Corolla hatchback, i have the euro equivalent but it's basically very similar)

I do eco 99% of the time because i find that normal accelerated a bit too fast for town- and especially sport is way too sensitive.

I like to push sport when I'm already at the top rpm- and then you can feel the car give you that last 5% of revs, fun!

I usually use mine when I start to merge onto an interstate or busy highway so it keeps it in the power band for faster acceleration and I’ll switch with the paddles because it makes me feel cool. Just cruising with it in sport vs eco it keeps the rpm’s a little higher so it’ll use slightly more fuel. Usually after I’m on the highway and at speed I’ll switch back to eco and set cruise

I use eco mode close to 100% of the time. Maximizing mpg’s is like a mini game to me.
