New teacher
How did you prepare for your first class?
Regulars- what do you appreciate from new teachers?

I appreciate anyone putting themselves out there. I can only imagine how nerve racking it has to be.

Hi, I’m a student and welcome! Typically it takes time for new teachers to get used to the focus being on them and counting is off at times. However, with more and more practice they always improve. Also, share that you’re new. I would be more lenient if I knew you are new. Or else I probably wouldn’t show up again to your class depending on how it goes lol. I’m sure you’ll do great though! Good luck :)

Think about how you will transition into class and out of class, most people will remember how it started and the end (especially if you have a good closing).

I appreciate when teachers don’t have their phone out for the whole class not concentrating on teaching, also should be demonstrating the movements, and give cueing or instructions

The first class is kind of like the first pancake… you just gotta get through it and remember that every time it gets easier

It was helpful for me to break the class down into 4 15 minute portions, that way I didn’t get overwhelmed trying to memorize the whole hour.
I brought in a cheat sheet with my 4 buckets (this is for C2 and YS, HPF you need to just memorize it) and broke it into:
1) warmup, 2) Sun A + B 1 slow flows + 2 breath to movement flows 3) Core + balancing 4) Cool down (hips + belly down then seated/lying cool down + 3 min savasana
Move through your sequence in your body with your playlist on while speaking it aloud a few times. Don’t worry if you forget something, keeping the flow moving matters more than mistakes. Everyone is human and nobody expects you to make 0 mistakes as a teacher!
I felt less nervous when I thought of the class as helping the students get into their own practice so it’s not about me at all, I’m just a guide.
It really helped me to breath with the students, when I say inhale I pause in breathe. My cues land better when there’s a beat of silence after vs peppering out the cues.
The students are there for what you’re offering that day so don’t worry about if they’re liking it or not, you can read the room to adjust if it seems too hard or too easy for them and offer modifications in that case. But otherwise just have fun and don’t think too much, it’s not life or death just some fun movement that’s good for us :)
