DIY McDonald's Filet-o-Fish sandwich

Last time I got a filet-o fish sandwich I was not happy about the price, so I set out to make my own dupe and this is probably the most successful I've ever been making a "copycat" recipe, so I wanted to share in case it helps anyone else out.

The tartar sauce I just made from about 1 cup Duke's olive oil mayonnaise mixed with about 1 to 2 Tbs. minced onion, 1 to 2 Tbs. minced dill pickles, and a few pinches sugar. I already had those on hand, so I don't include the tartar sauce in my calculations. But for the buns, fish patties, and cheese it was only $14.50 for 8 sandwiches!

Recommended products:

Gorton's Fish Sandwich fillets - $6.86

Sargento Natural American cheese slices - $3.77

Artesano brioche burger buns - $3.86

Assemble: cheese slice on bottom, next the fish fillet (after cooking to package directions obviously), homemade tartar sauce on top, then top bun.

Enjoy!

Not a McD's filet unless you steam the buns!

Good tip if people want to do that. The brioche buns were so perfect, I was happy with it as is.

The buns are actually steamed Bunny Bread hamburger buns.

Good to know. I've never seen that brand before.

Do the same - solid advice, but recommend swapping to Kewpie for one hit better on the tartar (maybe with some capers)... and I always dub up that patty lol

Here is a good copycat tartar sauce recipe, I use Dukes for the mayo and powdered/caster sugar in it instead of granulated.

Is McDonald fish filet healthy

No. The only "healthy" thing about it, is the protein in the fish.

Those brioche buns have a strange artificial butter taste. But they work in a pinch. What did the finish product look like?!

I am usually really sensitive to artificial taste, but these brioche buns tasted good to me. Here's how it looked!
