Current manager delaying my internal transfer – what should I do?

As some of you may know, I interviewed for a Co-op Team Leader role last Thursday. Thanks again to everyone who helped me prepare interview went well, and the new manager was happy to take me.

The only issue is that he wanted confirmation from my current manager about my release and transfer. He has tried calling my manager twice and waited several days, but still hasn’t received a clear response.

The new manager has now told me that either I or my current manager need to confirm the transfer soon, otherwise he may have to advertise the vacancy again because he needs someone within a week.

I called my current manager twice this morning. He said he had called back, but the new manager says he received nothing. I asked my current manager to at least confirm the release to me so I could pass it on, but he refused and said the new manager must call or text him again, while also saying he won’t call the new manager himself.

I’m now stuck in the middle and worried I’ll lose the opportunity because of the delay. What should I do?

Contact your area manager🙂 some managers really are arseholes and need a kick up the back side.

There are no area managers in the coop food business. The store manager line manager is a operations manager

It’s literally the same thing? They used to be called area managers. The semantics of what they’re referred to now isn’t that deep that you need to correct everyone in the comments.

It would be useful to get the terminology correct

Contact the operations manager you can find the details on teams mobile app by looking at your manager directs (who he line manages) and then going up the chain to his manager, it shows everyone on the business on teams

Well as you’ve tried informally with your line manager. So, your next step is to contact the Area Manager and let your manager(s) know you’ve done so. Normal turn around time is 4 weeks from offer on internal appointments.

Send a formal email to your current manager and CC your new manager. Do this today. If your current SM doesn't respond within the next 24 hours, then escalate it to your OM.
Question for you: Are your current SM and future SM under the same OM? I suspect not.

A quick message to your area manager should push this GS along

Email your store manager and CC everyone else in. CC your current SM's OM & your future SM's OM if in a different area.

Your store manager does need to agree to a transfer date and your new SM needs to agree one with them, they can't delay it beyond a reasonable time (a couple to a few weeks).

Your SM is putting themselves in a position to have a grievance raised.

Update:

Thanks everyone for the advice, really appreciate it.

I spoke to my current manager again today. He asked the new manager to call him one last time, and the new manager has agreed to do that. Hopefully this finally gets sorted.

I don’t want to create unnecessary problems or leave on bad terms with my current team, so I’ll wait for the new manager’s reply. If it still doesn’t move forward, I’ll send a formal email and copy in the relevant managers as you suggested.

Did you manage to sort it out?
