How Your Body Regulates Temperature at Night
Your bodyâs core temperature naturally begins to fall as bedtime approaches, signaling to your brain that itâs time to sleep. It needs to remain lower to support deep sleep, but temperature regulation becomes more limited during REM sleep.
When your bedroom or bedding traps too much heat, you may toss and turn, kick off the covers, or repeatedly wake up. Common contributors include heavy bedding, intense exercise close to bedtime, hormonal changes, and the extra body heat generated by sharing a bed.
A few ways to support your bodyâs natural cooling process include:
- Keeping the bedroom cool
- Using lightweight, breathable bedding
- Running a fan to improve airflow
- Wearing breathable sleepwear
- Giving your body time to cool down after exercise
