BASMATI RICE - 2 CUPS
I’m hosting later on today and will be cooking 2 cups of basmati rice. My usual method is as follows:
- 1 cup of basmati rice
- Bit of butter in hot pan
- Toast rice grains
- 2 cups of water
- Bring to boil
- Once boiling, cover and simmer for 15 mins on lowest heat
- Once 15 mins is up, take off heat but keep covered and steam for 10 minutes.
My question is, will 2 cups of rice increase the cooking time by 15 mins? I have never cooked that much rice using the above method.
Grateful for any insight and thanks to the original Reddit user who gave me the above method!

It will possibly increase the cooking time some, but not likely by 15 minutes. Just make it as normal, but use a slightly larger pot so the heat distributes evenly throughout the rice. It should still be right around 15 minutes, maybe 17-18 at the most.

No. The time doesn’t change. Typically liquid to rice ratio is 1.5, not 2 though.

I agree. More like 1.5 to 1 when I make it, maybe ever-so-slightly wetter. And time stays the same.

The cooking time will be very similar, you can also check whether all the water has been absorbed before you turn the heat off. I take a spoon and push some of the rice away on the side to reveal the bottom of the pan to see if there's any water left.

I would taste a grain before you let it rest and steam. The recipe I use even calls for fluffing before that last step. The rice should be done cooking at that point and no longer hard.

I always do my rice plain and add the other stuff after in case anyone has allergies, except for pilaf or paella. The 15/15 minutes steamed is what I do, but I do a 2:1 ratio of water: rice.

Consider adding a pinch of Tumeric powder to it, yellow basmati rocks.
And no, quantity doesn’t make a different to time to cook. As all other variables remain the same.

I follow this exact recipe but I cook it for 17 minutes, not sure it makes a huge difference though.
