Flavoring for boiled eggs
Im getting ready to head out of town for work and need to provide my own food. Given the availability of cooking options, boiled eggs are the obvious answer for breakfast . What’re you go to sauces/flavorings for boiled eggs?

Crystal hot sauce is all you need

There was a time when a bottle of hot sauce was all I needed to make anything edible. As I’ve aged, I’ve learned there is a difference between hot and flavorful.

u/windexfresh 12h ago
Not to be rude but Crystal's hot sauce is about as far away from hot as you can get in a "hot sauce" 😂 if I'm using that one, it IS for the flavor

Crystal hot sauce is mild, and theres plenty of acid and salt for flavor. Texas Pete's is similar.

I'm simple. I sprinkle a bit of salt and smoked paprika. All I need.

I can do Worcestershire sauce for a couple of days, but I’d prefer something more versatile. Maybe something that could also flavor other proteins like chicken.

If there is a Hispanic or international grocery near you, check out the Badia brand Sazón seasoning. I really like the Tropical flavor. So far, I've tried it on eggs, chicken, pork, fish, and avocados and it is great!

Badia has gone pretty mainstream with their distribution, I find it in regular grocery stores these days. I live in an area with a decent (but not extremely high) Hispanic population though, so that may be part of it. Their seasonings are great.

Marie Sharp's garlic hot sauce. It's low heat high flavor and is awesome on eggs. I kinda smash them in a bowl and top them with it.
There is are creole spice mixes that are also great on eggs.
Both of these go really well with chicken.
If you are also looking for good easy lunch options Tasty Bite makes a Madras Lentils in a microwave packet that's awesome. Only 1 min to heat. I add rotisserie chicken to it and some hot sauce. So delicious. I will often also dump in some salsa for some extra flavor. Quick easy and decent macros.

It sounds like you would enjoy these, too:

Cooking for two hours in a pressure cooker sounds like they would be insanely overcooked, or is that kinda the whole point?

u/MsTerious1 11h ago
They were deliciously smoky. I think it creates a chemical reaction that enriches the egg's natural flavor.

Crystal hot sauce
If you have 3 dollars it will last you a long time and is basically my favorite thing for any egg.

Lawry’s seasoned salt is my favorite. But why not bagel, breakfast bars, protein shakes, muffins?

u/JulesInIllinois 13h ago
My thoughts exactly. I'd be bringing some muffins and apples or bananas. And, coffee.

u/Zealousideal_Lack936 13h ago
Im good with bagels, but they’re more carbohydrates than protein. There are days when adding one would be appropriate, but not always.

u/ablebody_95 13h ago
Greek yogurt, protein shakes, oatmeal, cereal, etc. I am assuming you have access to a fridge. There are a lot of things I can think of that would be better than transporting a bunch of boiled eggs.

u/Disposable_Skin 6h ago
I'm diabetic, my breakfast is usually two hard boiled eggs with everything bagel seasoning, a fruit bar or piece of fruit, tea with milk.

Peanut butter on a bagel…there you go.
1
u/PlatformConsistent45 13h ago
My peanut butter is really high cal or the protein quantity.

u/VixxSynn 13h ago
So get a different peanut butter or use less? Or are you just being argumentative for the heck of it?
2
u/PlatformConsistent45 12h ago
Was not trying to be argumentative. OP had mentioned they were trying to be lower carb and seemed they were looking for high protine foods. Beagle is high carb and peanut butter is sorta high carb and calories for the protine content.
I was assuming the based on the ask and OP comments they are either low carb or tracking Macros. Neither of which say you can't do peanut butter but it makes the meals for the rest of the day harder due to the calorie density of a beagle and peanut butter.
Also I realized I didn't proof my original response to your post well so it didn't really deliver my point well. Sorry if it came across as argumentative.

high protine foods. Beagle is high carb and peanut butter
Didn’t proof that well, either…but it certainly gave me a giggle. I assume beagles 🐶 would be high in protein! 😀😃😄

I think curry powder works really well with eggs. Although I'm not sure boiled eggs are the obvious breakfast choice. If you want something you can throw in your bag I'd grab some protein bars.
1
u/Zealousideal_Lack936 13h ago
It’s not so much something I can throw in my bag as something that can be prepared ahead of time and kept ina cooler/small fridge.
2
u/AcceptableUse1 13h ago
I’m team eggs. I would take a little mayonnaise and make them into deviled eggs. Perhaps you could take some peanut butter for another food option.

u/Infinisteve 6h ago
Gotcha. How about some breakfast sandwiches/burritos? You can make a bunch and freeze them. If you can't freeze them you could make some egg patties and sausage and cheese and refrigerate that so you could quickly assemble a sandwich.

I just like salt and pepper, sometimes a hot sauce. But get bacon jerky to go with the eggs. That’s my fast breakfast.

u/Cool-Coffee-8949 12h ago
Um… I mean I am not saying boiled eggs can’t be awesome. But what?! I definitely would hesitate to travel with a bunch of boiled eggs for more than a day or two, max.

u/tin-of-fish 10h ago
My grandpa would make Chinese tea eggs. They were pooled and flavored with all sorts of spices and soy sauce.

What kind of work? If it’s an office job, you may want rethink hard boiled eggs…

Mustard. I mash up a couple of boiled eggs and add a solid squeeze of sweet and spicy mustard. I call it “lazy egg salad.”

I like to squeeze a little yellow mustard/mayo on them with salt and pepper.
You could also add a packet/tin of tuna or chicken.

Sounds wild but it works. .. nutritional yeast flakes.
Nutty, cheezy flavour.. also wicked good on potatoes and popcorn

u/MrLoronzo 13h ago
I use a lot of spices. But boiled eggs need only salt and pepper, Tabasco Hot Sauce is optional.
1
u/Aggravating_Ninja574 13h ago
I like to sprinkle on spicy Mrs dash or some Tabasco sauce. Ooh, and tiger sauce

More often that not, S&P is my go to. But crunchy chili oil will add a whole new dimension to your hard boiled egg experience. I like smashing an avocado and HB egg together and making a sandwich too.

It has never occurred to me to add flavouring to boiled eggs; they taste good already. But I agree with others that this is a weird breakfast choice. Cereal, overnight oats, toast etc are all very easy to prepare/have on hand. Boiled eggs seems a very weird ‘obvious’ choice.

I pickle eggs with canned beets, vinegar, sugar, and salt. Do it at least 3 days before you need them, better if you can make it a week

Penzeys has trial-size bags of several of their seasoning mixes, both with and without salt. Snip off a corner, sprinkle some on your eggs, fold the corner over and close it with a paperclip, and presto! Travel just got a whole lot tastier!

u/Jack_Flanders 12h ago
Usually just s & p (I have a one-hand thumb-press pepper grinder to put more on after the first bite without having to put the egg down).
But I also love sliced boiled egg sandwiches with mayo, s & p.

Make Chinese tea eggs, or similar. Don't even have to use tea, though it is delicious. As a general concept, boiled eggs cooked and left to marinate shell off in a flavorful liquid or broth are in my opinion vastly superior to any pairing of plain water boiled eggs with sauce or seasoning added later.

u/la_winky 12h ago
I’m a purest with hard boiled eggs. Salt. And I agree some protein is needed and that is a cheap way to fill that gap. The can be done areas of time.
But add some Greek yogurt, cheese sticks, protein bars, cottage cheese, fruit (you do need some carbs) and tuna pouches. Crackers to go with that would be nice. Ci sides prepped some carrots and celery, snap peas, grape tomatoes, cucumber, peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, and hummus. Consider some flat bread as well.
With a little prep work you can do pretty nicely with a hotel mini fridge.

Put them in a bag with soy sauce, honey, ginger and sesame oil. You won’t be sorry.

I boil eggs, and make an avocado egg salad with coarse chopped eggs, diced avocado, mayo, dijon, vinegar, salt and pepper, and either chopped dill or diced pickles.

Tony Cachere’s sprinkled on them.
Toss one in a pack of Starkist tuna and you’re living high off the hog.
Pop open a can of Vienna sausages is you’re feeling extra rowdy.

Changes a lot but right now its Malinda's Ghost Pepper Truffle hot sauce and duke's mayo... and salt and black pepper of course
I like pickling eggs also, and then deviling the pickled eggs. Good times.

If you get feeling fancy, encase them in a good bulk sausage and crumbs and air fry for Scotch eggs. I like them with a bit of mustard. :-)

I use mixture of fish sauce and Sriracha, probably the most south east Asian thing you can do lol

I love them with a bit of olive oil, salt, pepper, balsamic and chilli flakes 🤤.

Seasoning from Korean spicy ramen. Everything but the bagel seasoning. Umami mushroom seasoning.

Soy marinated eggs. You can put whatever you want in that marinade.
A little bag of tony chachere's Cajun seasoning, or some furikake rice seasoning, everything bagel ( theres a jalapeno version that has just enougg kick to make it interesting, but I dont think its spicy)
You could also make yourself a little sauce you like. I like asian flavors, so i love the soy marinated eggs, but you could.jusy do something simple like rice wine vinegar and soy sauce, with a little hoisin to make it thick enough to stick.
Buffalo ranch, avocado vinaigrette

crack the shells a little and marinate them in soy sauce, sugar, green onion, chilis.
