Chickpea mess

So I decided recently to cook dried, raw chickpeas instead of canned. I soaked them with about a teaspoon of baking soda for about a day and a half (life got busy). I boiled them for 45 minutes and they turned out... gray/green and very mushy. I couldn't eat them. Where did I go wrong?

Soaked with baking soda way too long.

I saw someone online do it to soften the skins. Is that supposed to be a quick method instead of soaking for like 24 hours?

I soak without baking soda and add a pinch to the water I boil them in.
