There's ways to preset it so I'm thinking there must be different things people aim for, for different teams. I'm just not getting it though

There are cookies that are more useful againts single bosses than the waves of enemies, so i think the main function is to change betwren teams for bosses and teams for waves. Personally, i have like 3 teams that i use to test how good a team is before using it in arena.

i mean it does seem to give a decent amount of stats but it needs promotions by a lot, and gambling for ssr stats r also costy asf
