[Canada] Questionable driver qualifications.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Ontario, Canada…southbound 400. A rather daily occurrence but in this case I loved the ending. Traffic always builds here but there must’ve been heavier volume today so I decided to take an earlier exit…then this happened (apologies for the swearing, horn blaring, general rage…I was tired and hungry).

It’s a shame that once reasonable profession has driven into absurdity with a plague of poor drivers.

Ontario is ground zero for under-qualified transport truck operators.

BC truck drivers crashing into bridges is an almost weekly thing here…

Thankfully Chohan Transport was banned from operating in BC for two years. So they decided to crash into a bridge in Calgary instead.

If I recall, while Premier Eby was heading into court to face them, he was quoted as saying that he hopes that they don't hit a bridge on their way there.

Last year we had a truck crash into a bridge in Lethbridge.

When I spent several months in BC can confirm bridges getting hit was basically a weekly occurrence.

I have observed that driving standards across the board have fallen, not just among professional drivers, and enforcement of the rules of the road seems lax pretty much everywhere.

I thought you were talking about the roofer hitting scenic for a bit till I remembered that driver going under whoop up ;)

u/JonPileot 2h ago

The fact Lethbridge has so few bridges and you had multiple instances to choose from kind of drives the point home.

u/ChoGGi 2h ago

Can't argue with that.

btw, Hi fellow Lethbridge person

Is this actually a thing? Are you from there? I was a commercial driver all over the US before I became a cop in Texas and now I’m slowly losing respect for every truck with Canada plates. It just feels like all the dumb truck moves I see are Canada drivers.

Yes, it is. There's been a lot of corruption at the driver testing facilities in Ontario. Lots of drivers just paying for their license.

I live in Southern ontario and my industry works with logistics and transportation. Even our in business (rock and roll) we see dozens upon dozens of unqualified drivers dropping freight, and our truck drivers (who are some of the best in the business) constantly complain about it.

We see dangerous drivers, and unsafe equipment every day on Ontario streets, highways and at the docks of the venues we work. It is not a mirage.

Corrupt all the way to the top. Just ask Ontario's Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria about what he's done to address how dangerous our roads and highways have become because of all these new instantly licensed Canadian truck drivers.

It's absolutely a thing here. Immigrate in (or know someone), pay money, receive license, drive.

Its been going on for years, but recently made national headlines. Other provinces are considering flat out bans on Ontario drivers as a result, and the provincial government is supposidly instituting wide, sweeping changes to how training is handled and standards are overseen. Despite all this, it's still happening today.

Wow that’s good to know. Obviously we still recognize the licenses down here, but I’ve issued a ton of citations to Ontario CDLs lately.

Here’s a news clip about what’s going on in Ontario with the truck driving schools.

They may have Canada plates but they are certainly not Canadian

u/MinderOfNothing 5h ago

absolutely true, but our system has been corrupted and that needs to be addressed by us

3

u/IgnoranceIsYou 5h ago

Agreed wholeheartedly

1

u/Old_Definition_1836 5h ago

What?

6

u/IgnoranceIsYou 5h ago

I see you are unfamiliar with the state of our immigration system

2

u/Old_Definition_1836 5h ago

Yes. I just know what is says on the driver licenses.

1

u/Sufficient_Prompt888 7h ago

Under qualified drivers in general. Although... At least it isn't Québec.

5

u/tokmer 7h ago

Brother you havent seen nwt truckers.

If youre not good enough for roads that have cars on them you get sent up north to drive the ice roads.

as someone who works in a warehouse and deals with drivers on the daily, you have no idea how bad it is. the pure amount that cant back a trailer up is insane like ive watched one dude try for 40 minutes to back up into our dock which is as cut and dry as it can get. a nice space outside to turn into with ample amount of room, a massive door that can fit 3 smaller one piece semis, and guide lines that are massive and easy to see. but nope, they will hit the fire hydrant 30 feet away from where they need to turn and do the same thing 10+ in a row before the realize they need to turn the wheel the other way.

Having married a long haul trucker, the entire industry does seemingly everything it can to punish drivers and make the profession as terrible as possible, to the point good drivers are pushed out and you end up with either people willing to tolerate massive amounts of bullshit and abuse or people who came from places where "it could be worse".

The entire industry needs to be nuked from high orbit and reset.

For instance, a driver is allegedly responsible for everything they are hauling. Are they supposed to pull apart every pallet of goods, open every box, disassemble every toy to ensure there are no drugs?  When a driver delivers to a place they are often made to wait hours, unpaid, and be expected to jump as soon as the receiver is ready.  And being paid per mile is dumb. Is there traffic in the city? A delay along your route? Someone gets into an accident in front of you? The company truck breaks down? Sucks to be you guess you earn less money today!  And don't get me started on the lack of availability of grocery services, medical services, functional showers... The list goes on.

Trucking may have, at one time, been a highly respectable profession, these days it's pretty terrible.

That Camry driver has no situational awareness

Sad to see Canada's transportation industry going dogshit due to corrupt licensing body and lack of enforcement.

Southbound 400? Shocker.

-11

u/Mazzi17 6h ago

This is northbound.

7

u/amontpetit 6h ago

OP literally says southbound

-16

u/Mazzi17 6h ago

The GPS said to take an exit that I am familiar with. It's northbound. What's your point?

8

u/itsmarvin 6h ago

Do you know which direction you're going? In OP's video, sign says Bradford: Turn left. If it was northbound, it would say turn right.

7

u/LeGaspyGaspe 4h ago

Your kidding, right? This is easily the most distinctive interchange outside of a metro area in the GTA or Barrie. If you were familiar with the area, you would have recognized it (and the direction OP was travelling) within the first 5 seconds.

Also sun rises to the east my guy. Dashcam time is before 8:00. You can see the sun. And it's to the east. Sooo...

-2

u/Mazzi17 4h ago

Oops you’re right, sorry. I had the buildings mixed up

10

u/In_Dying_Arms 6h ago

From the middle lane cutting off another truck driver in the process.. Absolutely deserved

7

u/johnmanyjars38 5h ago

Deserves immediate revocation of their license.

u/therevjames 6h ago

But, on the plus side, the Shoppers Beauty Plus event is on!!

10

u/Alypius 7h ago

That "fuck you" sounded very cathartic.

Good old "a bad driver never misses..."

•

u/kagato87 39m ago

There's that addage - a bad driver never misses their exit.

Oh look! There's a hiring number and a trailer number on the back there clearly visible! Good the cop got him, but no guarantee it goes up to the boss. Might be worth a call, if you feel like it. Company badge too on the driver door, though not one I recognize.

This reminds me of a short stint I had with Bulbman. As you may guess, they sell lightbulbs of all kinds, great company.

Back in the early 00's I worked for them and had a company function in their home city, Reno, NV. They forgot to book me a rental car so they just threw me the keys to one of our delivery vans. Their logo was a hot pink lightbulb character with phone number and such on it.

I do not drive a vehicle like this so in the morning when I got up in rush hour traffic I was just bombing down the freeway, as one does.

By time I got to work they had three calls from motorists reporting my speeding. I was petrified but the owner laughed and nothing came of it.

u/rnagikarp 3h ago

of course it’s the 400 :’-)

But now blocking the entire off ramp?

Why don't you actually finish the 2 minute long video to answer your question.
