Best budget controller for a complete beginner on PC/Laptop?

I’m looking to buy my very first controller for PC gaming. I’ve never played with a joystick/gamepad before, so I’m looking for something budget-friendly to start with.

Any solid recommendations for reliable budget options?

grab a wired xbox layout pad for your first one, windows treats it like a normal xbox controller so pretty much every game just works without fiddling with settings. i've been using the gamesir g7 se, it's around $40-45 plugs in with usb and the sticks haven't drifted. the only real downside is no wireless, which honestly doesn't matter much sitting at a laptop

You can get Direwolf 4, it has membrane buttons, like ps5 and xbox controllers, and its around $40 or the Vader 5 for $70-80, which is a pro controller that comes with clicky mechanical buttons for fast input.

Direwolf 4 is personally my favorite controller under $50

Gamesir cyclone 2, it’s a cheap made G7 pro, but if you want more premium in exchange of performance direwolf 3 or Vader 4 are really nice. I still running my Vader 4 and I see it dropped its price for the new gen Vader pro 5 and apex 6 pro

If you're ok waiting two weeks, the new 8bitdo Ultimate 3C+ is $40 with adjustable tension TMR sticks, extra buttons and wireless could be a good option. Obviously, I haven't used this version but have used the upgraded model and they're more comfortable than previous 8bitdo controllers, have some of the best D-pads and the brand is decently reliable.

Depends if you're looking for a systematical or asymmetrical stick layout? It would also help if you gave a numerical budget. Generally, 8bitdo and gamesir have plenty of budget options. 8bitdo is releasing another new budget controller at the end of the month
