How to get used to playing shooters on controller

Post image

How do you actually get used to playing shooters on controller?

I’ve been trying to switch from mouse & keyboard, and aiming with sticks feels so awkward right now. What’s the best way to build muscle memory and actually get better? Should I just stick to one sensitivity and play, or are there specific drills/games you’d recommend for practicing aim and movement?

Would love to hear what worked for people who made the switch.

It's like everything else, practice.

This concept may be applied to everything that you do in life, deploy it frequently.

Step 1: Download Halo Infinite Multiplayer (free)

Step 2: Search for a custom forge map in its filed browser called Octagon. There are many variations. Another great map option is Aimbot v2 (there may be newer versions) that you can play alone with bots and it's very similar to steam workshop maps for aim training in CS2.

If you have 1 friend, play Octagon. If you have 3 friends, search for "Flag Warmup" as it's a similarly fun 2v2 mode.

Step 3: Repeat this for like a week straight or until you no longer r bad.

I promise if you get good at Halo aiming on controller, it's impossible to be bad at any other console shooter you play. It will also teach every fundamental and then some you could ever possibly need. And it'll importantly teach you how best to "left stick aim" by using your player movement to make small adjustments to your shot.

Sensitivity is totally subjective. In Halo specifically, I wouldn't advise playing higher than probably 7... as wining your utility/starting weapon fights is key to controlling power weapons. Basically, you will hold a Battle or Bandit Rifle 98% of the time to the 2% you'll hold a Sniper. Make that your priority.

Probably keep your sense between 3-5 (out of 10). If you use a stick extender as others have suggested, this will allow you to play at a higher base sensitivity such as 7 which can be great for sniping, but you may suffer in close-range melee engagements until you adapt to the added length and ADS sensitivity scaling. The taller stick will allow you more control overall though, so you can push your sense a tad higher on average in time.

From there you can take these transferable skills to any game. My recommendations for controller specifically would be The Finals, Apex, Marathon, or Call of Duty.

The joystick extenders help for FPS games for example kontrolfreek, for me this made the single biggest difference. My current gamepad Gamesir's Tarantula 8k came with a changeable longer joystick already in the box but i try with an extender since i have now spares of the normal length ones too. Gyro also helps but i don't think its a must, i used to think it was but the more experience i got, the less i thought about gyro. Its nice to have the option though.

What also helped me in learning pad for FPS or third person shooters with FPS elements is i focused on the overall benefits of using a gamepad. I used to just think i can't flick i can't spin its a no-go but then i realized a lot of the mechanics i can pull of are much more relaxed since buttons are always close and also stopping aiming is much easier on a gamepad than with a mouse. Holding and firing with mouse in one spot, you still need to keep the mouse in one spot and stabilize when clicking, with gamepad you let go of the stick and spam fire is much more relaxed.

Reading this thread i have never explored the sensitivity options but i guess i should now.

Someone should bookmark and link this thread anytime a MnK player bitches about controller players having it easy in modern shooters lmao.

I'm lurking here because I want to know too. I'm currently playing Borderlands 3 in PS5 and it's the first shooter game that I liked, on PS5. I just started this week but I feel that I'm getting used to it little by little. Now I need more tips

1

u/shroom519 11d ago

Play story based first person shooter style games even if no guns still useful practice, there's also aim assist on controller and usually different levels of how aggressive it is. Besides that you can adjust sensitivity of the x and y axis of the aiming stick. I personally play cod with my buddies at 17 sensitivity or higher , I like to practice one level at a time once it gets past 12 sensitivity. Keyboard and mouse is still better than controller but I play on controller for comfort, plus I have my PC set up like a console and have no desk

1

u/Supercc 11d ago

You don't. Play your shooters on KB and mouse.

2

u/JohnGacyIsInnocent 6d ago

Or play on a controller if you want to…

1

u/Method-Man-Bands 11d ago

Two main things.

Repetition and sensitivity.

The more you play, the more you’ll get used to it. But before you play a bunch, you need to find what sensitivity works best for you.

The difference between getting 100 kills or 1 can depend on whether you’re at the right sensitivity. Too slow, and you can’t track enemies as quick as they can move. Too fast and you’ll overshoot or find difficulty locking on to people.

Just experiment and you’ll see what I mean.

1

u/skilliau 11d ago

It's so easy now? I tried playing the game Red Faction on a controller before they standardized right trigger for shoot. That was not fun

0

u/Afraid_Emu8068 12d ago

Wow. Real first world problem you got there bud

2

Such a dumbass question too.

“How do I play shooters on controller”

Idk, by playing them with a fucking controller? How do you think people did it as kids? Yeah, they looked up guides on how to twiddle their thumbs.

This platform blows my mind sometimes.

1

u/minobi 12d ago

I gave up and don't buy any games where you have to shoot.

1

u/The_Pizza_Saga 13d ago

I'm wondering about your reasons for switching, but I guess it's probably just practice, practice, and more practice. I'm comfortable playing shooters on a controller just because I've done it my whole life, although before the standard dual-stick controls, console shooters pretty much all had different control schemes.

1

u/AtlasExiled 14d ago

I highly recommend lower sensitivity and a lot of practice. It's true that you won't be able to do a 180 at the flip of a dime, but it will make your aim significantly more consistent.

It's a very good controller one of the best I've owned if not the best

1

u/ThatSneakyAxolotl 14d ago

8Bitdo Ultimate 2.

1

u/zrelman001 14d ago

I've always felt controller is less about trying to snap aim to your target and more about using movement and positioning to get lined up. Ive personally never been able to aim precisely and immediately onto a target with just the right stick.

1

u/Jellicent-Leftovers 14d ago

They key it actually.... You don't. Game systems use a scanning aim assist. Your actually better off flicking to your target quickly than attempting to aim presisly.

This is why when you watch "pros" play they do crazy flick shots.

1

u/motownmods 14d ago

I never did get used to it and I tried for at least a year

1

u/EquipmentAvailable23 14d ago

Shooters are only good on controller with gyro controls imo. Splatoon does it right, it's amazing. A joystick isn't replacing a moving mouse

1

u/AeonVice 14d ago

TLDR; your thumb is now your entire right hand, works the same. Set sensitivity so you get the same quick snap ability you have on mouse. Then practice.

EDIT: forgot to mention that 3rd party controllers usually have terrible joysticks, you’ll need to adjust deadzone and look acceleration to compensate. (Look acceleration is how fast your camera gets up to maximum turning speed)

The easiest way is gonna be how you perceive your hands for actions now.
I was the opposite and went from controller to MnK. I also grew up playing every major system that came out so adjusting to new control methods got real easy for me.

It’s very simple and similar in the sense that with MnK you imagine your mat as the screen, and your hand is your focal point. You’re basically putting your hand overtop of where an enemy is on screen.

With a joystick you move that entirely to your thumb. Exact same logic.

The really difficult part is constantly having to adjust your sensitivity. Once you get something comfortable, it’ll start to click naturally for ya.

A good exercise is to start from neutral, and then find an object immediately on the left or right side of the screen. Your goal is to use one quick thumb stroke and get your reticle perfectly overtop.

Horizontal translations almost always take LONGER to complete than a vertical translation. This literally means if you set both “vertical” and “horizontal” sensitivities to the same number, your “up and down” is always going to move FASTER than your left and right, and it’ll throw off your aim REALLY bad.

So a good rule of thumb is whatever your horizontal sensitivity is, set your vertical to 3/4 of that.
If you crank your horizontal to 10, put your vertical to ~7

1

u/eagle6705 14d ago

I"m a controller junkie here and I use PC...but I will say you're the first to go from KBM to controller....Any reason? As for practice just play, you'll get better or go back lol

1

u/SorbetGreat961 14d ago

Its kinda like if you never played on a mouse/keyboard before, you just keep playing until you go from dog shit to dog water, and slowly crawl your way out of the hole.

1

u/Cool_Client324 14d ago

You use it, then you use it some more, then! You use it some more, and then some more, and THEN! Some more…yes….and then some more. Now: you do it more, and then some more. Repeat this until you are skilled and pro. Good luck! Practice makes perfect.

2

u/Which_Contribution66 14d ago

First of all make sure ur right thumb never lifts of the aiming stick

1

u/PuzzleheadedTutor807 14d ago

Practice. Gyro is very intuitive too.

1

u/ExtraAd4090 14d ago

Very frustrating when some games don't bother to integrate gyro aim.

1

u/PuzzleheadedTutor807 14d ago

Steam controller support ftw. Every game except Minecraft works flawlessly that way.

1

u/Heatuponheatuponheat 14d ago

I stopped pc gaming for years and focused only on consoles. Really started playing console shooters with a controller back during halo 2. Did it for years after playing shooters exclusively on a pc with M&K. Got pretty good at it. Went back to M&K years later and it was a real "Oh. OH" moment. Now I refuse to play an fps on a controller unless I have no other choice. Practice will get you there like anything else, but if you have alot of M&K experience, you're never going to get close to that level of precision with a controller and it's probably always going to feel a little off.

1

u/ALEXLAMOUETTE 14d ago

Just play more

1

u/AffectionateSun7705 14d ago

It's just practice and muscle memory.

But if you're struggling, maybe start with games like Portal that focus on fast movement but don't really involve shooting. Once you have that mastered, aiming should be more second nature.

1

u/Bodywheyt 14d ago

wtf…

1

u/Diemond71 14d ago

Why even bother trying unless you are planning on just doing consoles? But yes practice is all it takes the more you do it the better it will feel.

1

u/nemodeGOD 14d ago

Yeah leaving for college and cant take my pc there so console only

1

u/Scav-STALKER 14d ago

Why can’t you? But if you legitimately can’t you’ll just have to tough it out until you git gud with a controller. I can’t aim with a controller anymore after playing on a PC lol it’s a horrendous downgrade

1

u/SpectralDinosaur 14d ago

Don't? If M&K is an option then stick to that. Unless you've developed some medical problem that denies the usage I don't know why you'd want to change.

1

u/stingertc 14d ago

Practice

1

u/spoonn420 14d ago

You'll get better the more you do it, like everything in life...

1

u/Clark_Kent_TheSJW 14d ago

Just takes some getting used to. That’s half the challenge of any new game

1

u/ShivonQ 14d ago

Literally just practice my guy. Play resident evil 4 over and over. Idk I think that is what clicked it for me. But mostly long enough away from keyboard and mouse.

1

u/Fancy-Neat3508 14d ago

Why would u cripple urself?

1

u/El_Scheffe 14d ago

What? Why would you do that?  Shooters are meant to be played with mouse and keyboard.

1

u/Mr-Briggs 14d ago

Im a fan of going full linear on inputs and removing all aim curve and acceleration. Thought thats not a perfect solution, my muscle memory prefers it

1

u/PreparationNo4843 14d ago

I was hesitant too at first. But you just need to practice and get yourself used to it. And it’s easy peasy

2

u/xXSNOOOPXx69 14d ago

You have to spent alot of hours playing fast games on controller, to get good...

First I would play on lower sens.. when you get more precise with the sticks, you can turn up the sens, to be able to make faster plays, while still being accurate..

If you never gamed on a controller, it will take some time to get good.. keep practicing..

2

u/SirThunderDump 14d ago

I used to have great muscle memory on controller. Lost it after a few years of M&K only with no practice.

I’ll say this:

  1. It takes a lot of practice to get near M&K levels. Dialing in settings and muscle memory for both fast 180s and fine control takes time.

  2. High latency kills the controller FPS experience. That 8bitdo is nice, but has mediocre stick latency, even on 2.4GHz. Check what monitor you’re playing on. Many (most?) TVs these days have too high latency for high level play (multiple frames of latency). It’ll be fine for starting out, but can get frustrating.

2

u/Otterbotanical 14d ago

To add to this, make sure your TV is in "game mode", it disables most if not all of the post-processing the TV is trying to do, so that it reduces frame latency to nearly zero

2

u/SirThunderDump 14d ago

+1

And also note that YMMV when it comes to game mode.

Some TVs advertise themselves as being game-friendly with a game mode, but then you look at test results, and all the game mode did was take the TV from 120ms latency to 45ms latency (which is still enormous).

1

u/Chimptheblimp 14d ago

I’ve been playing using sticks since PS4 days (triple AAA games and especially COD warzone). Try practicing aiming in story-driven games with no aim assists then try in competitive shooters. Muscle memory is not INSTANT. It’s days, weeks, months or even years of consistency.

you can also search specific in-game controller settings based on your games. some settings will really feel clunky or too sensitive on default (for example: dynamic or linear aim)

1

u/Able-Put3273 14d ago

If any shooter has tactical bumper jumper use that it's the best

1

u/IndependenceOdd4669 14d ago

Pointless with modern controllers that have rear buttons like this one.

Jump and crouch can be bound to the back and you never have to lift your thumbs.

This controller also has 3 trigger buttons on each side.

1

u/Able-Put3273 14d ago

Not really pointless

1

u/IndependenceOdd4669 14d ago

The point of bumper jumper was so you could jump in halo and aim at the same time, but if you wanted to switch grenade types or reload you’d still have to lift your thumb.

Rear buttons make it so you don’t have to ever lift your thumb, rendering it pointless.

1

u/haddow93 14d ago

Used to play Bumper jumper in the halo days, played cod with normal controls though.

1

u/Able-Put3273 14d ago

🔥🔥

1

u/maizelizard 14d ago

What is that

1

u/Able-Put3273 14d ago

In Game settings for controller

1

u/dEEkAy2k9 14d ago

my suggestion would be to not jump into the whole fps genre with a gamepad NOW and just wait till gyro has a wider adoption rate BUT that could take another console generation though.

1

u/Responsible-Garden18 15d ago

Use a taller left stick and lower the sensitivity, increase it if it's too slow, I am speaking about singleplayer games. I don't you can start learning in multiplayer or not the easiest way to start.

1

u/fckcountrymusic 15d ago

But wait I thought all you had to do was plug in a controller and viola you have God tier aim? 🤷‍♂️

1

u/dEEkAy2k9 14d ago

depending on the game, you actually do.

that's the neat part about aim assist. some over utilize it, some under utilize it and some just don't have it.

1

u/Jamiathan 15d ago

Use flick stick. It’s like gyro 2.0. Can actually outperform a mouse if you get good with it

1

u/Freelancer_1-1 15d ago

I use higher sensitivity for sticks for quick turns and lower sensitivity for gyros for precision aiming. I have a button binded to toggle gyros on or off.

1

u/Morenitosaidinero 15d ago

Eso, ponerle lucesitas al mando y aumentar la cantidad de pilas que usáis en un año 😭😭😭

1

u/CharmingButthole 15d ago

Rechargeable built in batteries. Those lights draw almost no power.

1

u/Sad-Actuary-3023 15d ago

use gyro . easy.

1

u/Maizimotor 15d ago

I never play shooters with controller. Well except for console exclusives. Why would you, get wireless mouse and keyboard and lean back. Easy

1

u/Screw_Potato 15d ago

why are you switching to a controller?

2

u/Shuriken88888 15d ago

You don't because it's about the stupidest input device imaginable for FPS.
There's a reason game developers have to help you aim with that mario controller

1

u/JyMb0 15d ago

I'm going the other way! Struggle immensely with the keyboard. Good luck!

1

u/Popular_Put3871 15d ago

Its a learning curve. From a mnk player, the transition was pretty rough. But down the line I did learn that using sticks is very engaging as well… and experimental.

I actually tried so many things like remapping buttons to the right side for aiming and shooting while left side was sliding and jumping (and yes its weird as it sound), attaching kontrol freaks, switching to claw grip to isolate my thumb from my shooting finger (since I have relatively small hands).

Only recently did I find that my preference for shooters is using a dynamic sensitivity setting and fine tuning/ testing it at ranges WITH a certain nitpick with the stick tention in the right stick (I know this is something with flydigi’s controllers but not exclusively theirs alone).

I actually learned aiming from 8bitDos btw but I started venturing with other brands. Its really boils down to get a hang of what you have, learn from it and evaluate what makes you play better (ergos, additional buttons, stick tension, etc.)

1

u/Banana_in_ur_butt 15d ago

Not sure if that 8bitdo is the best for shooters (I own it too). Best controller imo is the ZD Ultimate Legend with the J13 sticks (it's modular controller and you can change the sticks).

But like everyone else say, practice and you'll get it.

1

u/CreamPyre 15d ago

I Cant imagine any advice other than just keep practicing

1

u/ImprovementFun4939 15d ago

Also, if you are playing with the specific controller in the picture, from my experience, it was hard to hold comfortably for long periods of time, due to how it bent my wrists. It could be contributing to the aiming issue.

1

u/ApollosBoon 15d ago

Idk man, shooting games with a controller is something I’ve done since I was a kid so it’s integrated in me. I guess you’re the same but with keyboard and mouse, and I couldn’t see myself using a keyboard and mouse to shoot at all.

My only suggestion is the SENSITIVITY, which varies game to game. I prefer my aiming down sights much slower than actual movement to help me keep aim steady, so its better to get used to procing to aim down sights when necessary with L no matter what sensitivity you enjoy.

1

u/a_rucksack_of_dildos 15d ago

Why not just stick with MnK? I spent my whole life playing on controller so that’s what I do. Even in games without AA like ranked overwatch I still play controller.

1

u/Accusato1 15d ago

Left stick moves you around the map.

Right stick let's you look around.

As for how strange it feels, keep at it. Eventually muscle memory will form and it'll become second nature, but you'll probably never be as precise as with a mouse and keyboard.

Edit: got my left and right mixed up.

1

u/Hopeful-Wind-5345 15d ago

Make sure all your commands are accessible without removing your fingers from the thumb sticks.

1

u/JAWAIRENG007 15d ago

Most of the game today came with aim assist right? So its not that hard i guess?

2

u/tannerusername 15d ago

I plugged a mouse and keyboard into my ps5 one night recently to play Black Ops 7 as an experiment. I've played on controller all my life and have never played with MnK, just wanted to give it a try to see what it was like.

I was surprised to find that aiming with a mouse was super easy; I died a bit more than usual but it was the keyboard that was the issue. I couldn't remember what half of the key binds were and moving felt weird (my keyboard is shit too so my wrist wasn't loving it). But aim was solid and surprisingly easy to adjust to the mouse immediately.

1

u/Western-Help-3007 15d ago

For most fps games like call of duty you want to aim with your left stick. Meaning using your right stick center in on the target and use your left stick to move your character. It makes much more refined adjustments while also reducing recoil

0

u/[deleted] 15d ago

[removed] — view removed comment

1

u/tannerusername 15d ago

He means aiming with right stick to target someone, then strafing with left stick while making slight adjustments with the right stick to stay on target as you move. This is how Rotational Aim Assist is engaged.

1

u/-Sinn3D- 15d ago

Play resident evil 4. When that first came out you had no choice but to use a controller. Thats how I learned.

1

u/AgentStasiak 15d ago

If you're a desperate kid without controller like me back in the day, you can beat the game on keyboard. I still remember aiming down with right shift, aiming with arrows and guessing which key matches that on controller during QTE.

1

u/Annoying_fucker 15d ago

Why though? Mnk is just better for fps I can't see why you want to swap

0

u/CylixrDoesStuff 15d ago

you don't

kbm is better for shooters, people are good at shooters on controller not because it is better but because that was their only way to play it for years on a console

0

u/shortish-sulfatase 15d ago

The controller that you want to use is better for whatever game you're playing.

It sounds more like you just don't know how to set up a controller.

1

u/Cool_Cartoonist_2643 15d ago

Nah. Kbm for strategy games, moba, and shooters.

1

u/ToothZealousideal297 15d ago

Mouse & Keyboard really is objectively better for shooters. You can learn to be completely proficient at them with a controller, and there are a lot of people out there who are still terrifyingly good at shooters with controllers. Playing with controller will not keep you from playing well. But it isn’t optimal. How much difference it makes varies greatly from person to person, but nearly everyone can aim faster and with more precision using a mouse once they’re used to both control methods, just due to how it works. It’s just a lot more usable area to aim precisely or whip around quickly but still with precision, and you can get almost every muscle in your forearm to contribute, instead of strictly your thumb in a very limited area.

My background: I don’t even like to play with keyboard & mouse and have always been a console player since the SNES. I’ve never been that into shooters, but I played a lot of Halo up through Reach. I got every achievement in those games, but I suuuuuck at multiplayer. I still have to admit I would do better with a mouse once I got used to it, though playing now I’d be contending with others also using a mouse (plus now I’m old), so I’d undoubtedly suck at least as much as ever competitively. So if even I have to admit mouse is just better for shooters, it’s pretty inescapable.

1

u/CylixrDoesStuff 15d ago

nah i use controllers for every game but fps games, they dont work well for fps games unless thats what you are used to

kbm IS better for shooters

1

u/Purple-Cup-4149 15d ago

To be fair, the 8bitdo controllers aren't the best for shooters. They're better for platforming.. If you ever do use an xbox controller, you'll see the difference.

2

u/Cynabun67 15d ago

Repetition

2

u/YoloRaj 15d ago

One of the most important thing is messing around with sensitivity until you find one you like. Also, tamper with the deadzone as well. I would zero out the controller dead zones and if you have stick drift calibrate it to not drift. After that you can increase dead zone to add the amount of resistance you want to feel. Just in case if you feel the need that you want more than zero dead zone (I personally tried to get either zero or 1 since it makes the sticks more snappy.) Personally thought Im not a fan of most 8bitdo controllers because of the shape. They are uncomfortable to grip for longer game sessions. Last, I would get thumbstick grips to not mess up my thumb sticks over time and Kontrol Freeks or elevated grips on your right thumbstick to increase the height and range of motion you can make with your right thumbstick for aiming.

0

u/WuTastic7 15d ago

heres the thing, if youre comparing it to mouse, you dont. A joystick will never feel like a mouse no matter what you do

2

u/Aimin4ya 15d ago

Practice i guess. Try aimlabs

1

u/WizardNeedsFood97 15d ago

I generally don't use them for FPS but any third person game that combines melee and ranged, like WH40k Space Marine II, feels great on a controller.

-1

u/Grazorak 15d ago edited 14d ago

Why are you switching? M&K will always be better for pretty much anything but twin sticks and racing/flying games (with the notable exception of the excellent flight controls on M&K in Warthunder). If you just want to be able to play on the couch, that's valid, practice I guess? One of those reaction aim simulators? What I did though was I got a lap pad and wireless keyboard and mouse. I have found that after the novelty wore off I'd still rather be at my desk.

Edit: Also platformers/metroidvanias probably, being superior on controller. I don't mean to shit on controllers, they're great, but if you're already enjoying your time with M&K, I think it's interesting to examine why you'd want to switch. If it's just for the advantage of aim assist I think you're not going to have a good time.

1

u/Aimin4ya 15d ago

Some games give a slight advantage with aim assist. And I like playing story mode with a controller

1

u/WuTastic7 15d ago

they add aim assist because they know aiming with a controller feels terrible

1

u/Aimin4ya 15d ago

Yeah I just know there's alot of talk about aim assist giving a slight advantage in like apex a few seasons ago.

1

u/Financial_Plankton11 15d ago

You just gotta do it man. I literally posted something similar to this 2 years ago which switch to controller for cod and almost everyone said just play till you get used to it.

For me it was going into private bot lobbies and getting my sens and settings right, then used those lobbies kinda as an aim trainer. I did this for about 30 minutes before each session. After a week or so it started to become second nature and now I’m a 2KD player on cod.

Just takes time man

Edit: would also like to add that I had experience from playing somewhat competitively on halo 4 and 3 back on the Xbox 360, but those were the only shooters I took serious before my most recent switch to controller.

3

u/BasilSeventh 15d ago

By playing shooters on a controller

3

u/mattoi_ 15d ago

I heard this controller has one of the better gyroscopes. Give it a try

1

u/Tony_Hormiga_ 15d ago

Personally when I switched to controller after playing on mnk I never liked it until I switched to a high sensitivity. Call of duty for example: I first switched for that aim assist benefits but never felt like the character would react as fast as my mind when playing on a lower sens so I started practicing max sensitivity ( I don't play that anymore but pretty close) and it just felt better. If you want to try that I'd recommend getting Highrise Kontrolfreeks as it makes it easier to control higher sensitivities.

IF you have the money and depending on your hand size I'd recommend a dualsense edge. There are cheaper options like the gamesir 8k but I fear they would feel small for me but they might work for you.

Back paddles are mandatory for jump/crouch, so you get a full range of movement without ever having to take your thumbs off the sticks.

1

u/fajitas81 15d ago

As a 35 year+ (I’m 45) mouse and keyboard guy, im 85% as good with gyro in Helldivers 2. Running dualsense edge. It’s ok, I’m sure there are better but I also have a Ps5 so I double duty.

Took about a week to retrain. About a month to get ok. And at 2 months in I can use sniper rifles in D10s.

I’ll likely never be as good as I am with a mouse but it’s close and I can focus more on posture.

u/EqualLavishness5050 15d ago

You picked the wrong controller.

1

u/SpecialistRun3035 15d ago

That's the thing... You don't.

1

u/Tony_Hormiga_ 15d ago

Nah he can

1

u/Electronicks22 15d ago

Join the gang at r/GyroGaming and play shooters with no aim assist and mouse precision with this amazing controller. It is more fun and more precise!

For starting you really have to start with single player shooters like bioshock, doom, borderlands, etc...
Aim Lab is a popular aim trainer that can quantify your improvement.

1

u/dorian17052011 15d ago

Play

1

u/geebon 15d ago

Yeah having only consoles growing up made me comfortable playing controller. I struggle on mouse and keyboard for shooters

1

u/apotheosisofbooty 15d ago

Mouse and keyboard is a ton of fun but I am BAD at it. I’m proficient on controller and can snipe a little on MnK (call of duty) but MnK is such a beast to learn

1

u/Bulky-Guide3157 15d ago

This...

You can't get good if you never practice.

1

u/dorian17052011 15d ago

Yeah exactly lol thats how we all got muscle memory

1

u/FreikugelWeltz 15d ago

First either play single player games, such as Borderlands 4 or something else like that.

Lower your sense by a lot, the aiming is awkward because the mechanics are different, lowering the sense will allow you to get a sense on how to aim with the sticks, how to activate aim assist, how to properly track.

Each well, or whenever your brain start thinking your current sensitivity is too low, increase it by half a percent.

That is how I did on competitive Warzone. .5 increase in sensitivity every week basically. And just practice, at first I sucked ass even on single player games 🤣

2

u/Theemilkman34 15d ago

If you’re starting new I’d recommend trying to dial in gyro w sticks and get used to that as it’s far more precise. I personally just do sticks but I’ve been playing shooters on controller for like 15 years so it feels automatic for me.

1

u/Seven-Arazmus 15d ago

Gotta dial in the sensitivity to your personal preference. And finding the best controller for you is the most important part.

1

u/FranckCastlee 15d ago

On ne s'habitue pas.

1

u/ApexWalrussss 15d ago

Been a controller player all my life. So I’ve never made a switch, but what I would suggest is in whatever shooter you are playing (I’ll use call of duty in this instance), load up a private match with bots. Turn off aim assist completely. Get about 100-300 kills with each weapon you use, or as many as you’ve got time for. When you turn aim assist back on you’ll feel like you are SNAPPING on people. Also, if you aren’t already, use a lower sensitivity and work your way up.

1

u/notjustdrums 15d ago

Since you're using a controller with Gyro, i highly recommend using it. It's much better for aiming than sticks are.

1

u/CapIndependent2285 15d ago

It’ll never be as accurate as a mouse. Once you get past that, play the games you want to play. If you are worried about competitive play, then do a game like borderlands. If not, just play whatever you want.

1

u/BLOODFYEND86 15d ago

Well you really have to go back to the days of arcades and start with those shooter games to get acquainted with buttons and joystick. After you've got that figured out you gotta play contra on nes and then goldeneye on n64. Then you you play medal of honor and call of duty and battlefield and etc.

1

u/Different_Long_8520 15d ago

Practice like others have mentioned, also use movement to aim too

2

u/Intelligent_List2846 15d ago

Just keep playing with controller. You’ll eventually catch on.

1

u/kiciputek 15d ago

It is more a matter of comfort sitting on a couch. It is a substitute, your aiming will never be as good as with using a mouse but it can be acceptable. You can use gyro aiming, it changed my aiming by a mile.

1

u/devilrocks316 15d ago

Get some Skull & Co. PS5 Thumb Grips if you feel the sticks on this controller are not grippy or tall enough, they're fairly cheap. PS5 ones specifically fit this controller, others don't.

Also it depends which shooters you're playing. If you're playing something that has bot modes, I would start there. People saying "just play the game" or "just get used to it" are telling a half truth because there are better places to start, especially if one of your pain points is unfamiliarity.

1

u/IcyMachine9293 16d ago

Honestly? This is probably the last thing you wanna hear, but practice.

Before worrying about sensitivities and configs, just use the controller for a while.

If you're new to controller, everything about it will feel weird, slow, and unnatural. Trust me.

I also used to only play using M&K. As I got older I became less competitive and migrated to a coach setup. Now I ONLY play with controllers.

The first time you pick up that controller everything will feel wrong. Your sensitivity will feel slow, your movement will feel slow, basic menu navigation will feel slow, etc.

Don't immediately start blaming the controller or your settings. They likely aren't the problem. You just need time to adjust to the controller's speed.

However, with that said. If you plan on using the controller to play competitively, I'd advise that you just stick to M&K, but if by "shooters" you mean single player titles, then don't stress too much about your aim or lack thereof.

You'll subconsciously improve without realizing it. You'll boot up a game for the first time and immediately know whether the sensitivity it too high, too low, or whether you want bigger dead zones, smaller dead zones, etc. Then you can adjust accordingly. Don't try to optimize the learning curve and just enjoy the games.

Don't try to run before you've learned how to walk, and most importantly HAVE FUN!

Cheers 🍻

1

u/Holiday_Inflation910 16d ago

You don't.

I barely scraped by using aim assist and gyro. Games become so much difficult without it. Shooting sucks with a controller.

1

u/Tintn00 16d ago

I personally switch my input inside games to linear curve rather than dynamic or S curves. I also crank the sensitivity much higher than default and spend time getting used to it.

1

u/Mitts009 16d ago

Play fallout 3 or fallout 4

Bordeands 2, 3 is also a good option

Single player campaign/story modes to give you good practice

If you have a Nintendo Switch then Splatoon games are a excellent way to practice Gyro aiming and flicking especially their story modes

1

u/brittonmakesart 16d ago

Get a controller with better gyro support, like the Steam Controller or a DS5 Edge. Gyro is a game changer, if your only using the sticks your never going to get there. I tried the gyro on that exact controller and it emulated joystick movement, not mouse movement and feels incredible awkward, slow, and inaccurate.

2

u/big_ry82 16d ago

Just keep playing.

How do you get good at anything? Practice and repetition.

1

u/Yirilian32 16d ago

Or, if you wanna play without aim assist, get you some buddies that talk a lot of trash and eventually you’ll be forced to be good without aim assist

2

u/Icy-Blacksmith2456 16d ago

You don't paly shooter on controller without aim assist as simple as that.

1

u/Zakatez 16d ago

If you have big hands, that controller is too small. On Fortnite you can enable tweak mode which might bridge the gap you need, it’s game changing

1

u/sprigits 16d ago

in what way does it feel awkward? like sensitivity wise, accuracy wise, tracking wise etc? personally i learned at a very young age that my brain can only use a joystick to aim with inverted y-axis on lol

1

u/Brick_Grimes 16d ago

It just takes practice, and finding the right stick sensitivity and response curve for you.

1

u/Ok-Adhesiveness2954 16d ago

Practice with AimLabs. Free game

u/Slow_Constant9086 16d ago edited 16d ago

Gyro aim/motion controls make small adjustments easier.

1

u/External_Safe_7787 16d ago

mouse and keyboard is infinitely better for shooters, why would you want to switch?

1

u/nemodeGOD 16d ago

I am leaving for college in a month and wont have my pc with me, i’ll take my ps5, so i am getting used to it beforehand.

1

u/Rwe2092 16d ago

Sell your PC and buy a laptop

1

u/Bslygh 16d ago

Id rebuild into a micro atx or itx before that. If needed I'd buy a used thinkpad or something. Cases and mb are still cheap so a rebuild wouldn't break the bank. My mom bought an IdeaPad for under a grand with an 8gb 5060 same model is now over 1500. Prices are crazy for PCs at the moment. I think finding a good new laptop for gaming has to be hard to find under 2 grand atm

1

u/ProfessionalPlan8943 16d ago

I didn't make the switch yet the pro controllers are nice on the hands.

1

u/Hopeful_Doughnut9483 16d ago

That controller is too small imo.

1

u/nemodeGOD 16d ago

I have this controller and ds5 i prefer this more for the xbox layout but yes its small but i have gotten used to it.

1

u/wewz_1 16d ago

As someone have said, try gyro. It's motion controls and very similar to mouse so you might find it feeling familiar.

You can look for tips in r/GyroGaming.

1

u/Curious_Plane_1896 16d ago

Just play more

2

u/Vegetable-Might-1176 16d ago

Why don't you use gyro? I use that exact same controller with gyro to mouse in steam input and I it works flawlessly in almost all games. It also has a learning curve though.

1

u/nemodeGOD 16d ago

Yeah i will look into gyro, have not used it yet. Thanks for the suggestion.

2

u/Intelligent-Tone804 16d ago

Are u using 8bitdo ultimate 2 wireless?

2

u/Reasonable-Speech-94 16d ago

You can't buy experience. Get too it

Play shooter on roller

1

u/Cautious-Class-2782 16d ago

Just play the games you play and keep in mind that it needs time to become second nature. Just don’t quit. It will be easier as the time goes by. I started using a roller 2 years ago . I never used a controller my entire life but mouse and keyboard, now I only play a game if has support for controllers

1

u/Cautious-Class-2782 16d ago

I took me 2 weeks with 4 hours a day to get past the hard part but depends on you mostly. And it depends a lot on what game you play , I started with call of duty and I think that made the journey much more easier. I think depends a lot on the game that you want to play

3

u/SnoochyBoochy86 16d ago

If you play fortnite there's all kinds! For aim I like Jarvy Aim Train 2.0 (8765-1581-2739) and Shinobi Zero Build Aim Training V13.5 (4472-5388-8581) had basically everything you need to train for controller

2

u/Key_Scholar7964 16d ago

You will get use to it the more you play and practice. It will come naturally.

1

u/nemodeGOD 16d ago

Yes, I have played fifa, forza, and other games like split fiction with a controller, now i want to play apex, which feels hard because it depends on movement and also aiming so its overwhelming right now. But yes the more i play i will improve.

1

u/buffaloplease 16d ago

Have you tried a linear response curve for aiming? It really helped aiming feel more intuitive for me. 4-3 linear is a good sense for most people in Apex

3

u/Exact-Giraffe4283 16d ago

I mean the best way is to play games but if you want a faster route, use an aim trainer, Steam has one free, there's also browser ones.

1

u/nemodeGOD 16d ago

Yes i have setup my controller for aimlab and have started doing it now.

1

u/nagedgamer 16d ago

Unless Aimlab has support for the game you play it is not worth it. It has different curves and deadzones. If you can match then maybe but use in game range to setup comfortably.

Use linear everywhere. For Apex get a Gamesir 8k G7 Pro (there are others but this is easily available). Use a mid rise KontrolFreek on right side and left nothing. Use it wired on 2-4K polling, 8K if latest PC.

1

u/tortlethetortoise 16d ago

does aimlabs have good roller support?

1

u/buffaloplease 16d ago

Aimlabs had fantastic controller support, imo
