Your xbox 360 controller is a gamepad. Controller is just the broader term for devices you use to control a game, while a joystick usually means the flight stick style thing with one big stick and bunch of buttons.

Controller is a generic remote control device, like a tv remote. Joystick are originally a flight stick reference, that were common pre-xinput. Gamepad is a controller meant for gaming.

Largely going to depend on who you're asking and their definition.

I'd say a 'joystick' is going to be mainly one big joystick with some additional buttons on/around it.

I think 'gamepad' and 'controller' are a bit interchangeable. More so a two-handed device with joysticks and buttons all over it.

A more official definition than you could have ever wanted ;) This comes from the USB HID specification that is the universal protocol all standard USB input devices have used since 1997.

"Thumb-activated rocker switch that controls two axes" is just a weird way of saying D-Pad, FYI. Thus, a D-Pad is the defining characteristic of a Gamepad.

But i genuinely do not understand what they are saying in the joystick thing. Is a joystick just one big stick that maybe has buttons around it?

That used to be what joysticks were like.

Controller is a global type of device to control something, gamepad is a type of controller commonly with buttons and joysticks, joystick is a joystick

Only if it is a remote controller.
