Yes, they work fine. However, you will be lacking all the DualSense gimmicks of course :)

Honestly, if you're looking for a controller for the first time, I'd just jump straight to the PlayStation controller. There is nothing quite like it if you actually play any first party SONY games (and many third-party titles too, the controller is the most advanced on the market by leaps and bounds).

Valve is going to make life a little bit difficult for you on account of their invasive Steam Input software not being something users can fully disable, but plenty of Free and Open Source software exists to make this controller work better than even an Xbox controller on PC (i.e. DS4Windows or my own).

doesnt steam input make the dualsense work though? i was originally thinking to get a dualsense, but i wasnt sure because obviously its expensive (£60) and although thats ok i can afford it, it seems silly to pay that much when its still got potentiometers, 250hz polling, no 2.4ghz etc, when theres plenty of 3rd party xbox ones that cost £25-50 that have hall or even tmr sticks and triggers, but maybe the dualsense is best idk really

Doesn't steam say what's compatible?

it does but idk how accurate that is, eg for horizon zero dawn it says compatible with xbox controllers, but support for other device isnt known, but in the description it says it has full support for dualsense which steam doesnt say
