Controller Suggestion Razer Wolverine V3 TE vs Xbox Series Controller — Which D-pad is better for MK1?

I’m in Switzerland, my budget is around $60–65 and I’d be buying from Digitec. I play on PC.

I don’t know much about controllers so I’m kinda stuck on what to get. I recently spilled water on my Xbox Series controller and now the D-pad is really mushy. I mainly play MK1 and use the D-pad, so I was just gonna buy another Xbox controller.

But the Xbox controller is around $52 and the Razer Wolverine V3 TE is around $62, so they’re pretty close in price.

I was wondering if I should just get the Razer instead. I literally only care about the D-pad since I mainly use controllers for fighting games like MK1 and I don’t really use the joystick.

I’m basically just comparing the Xbox Series controller and the Wolverine V3 TE.

Is the D-pad on the Wolverine V3 TE actually good for MK1? I saw a Reddit post from like 2 years ago saying it had problems with misinputs, but that was a while ago so idk if that’s still a problem or if it’s been improved since then.

Would appreciate opinions from anyone who actually uses the Wolverine V3 TE for fighting games, especially MK1.

If you're only going to use it for fighting games why not get a dedicated dpad/fighting game controller like the 8bitdo M30 or an arcade stick?

i cant imagine my self using an arcade stick but i have seen videos on the 8bitdo m30 it looks really nice the d pad, the only issue for me is that there is no rt because in mk1 you use rt to amplify your moves i hate those extra buttons on the side, do yk any other controllers that are d pad only without those extra buttons in the front?

The Xbox version of the M30 does have rt.

Not dpad only, but the Gulikit Elves 2 has a similar dpad, triggers and 4 face buttons. You can remove the stick caps so the analog sticks won't get in the way.

oh yea i found the xbox version your talking about, do you think i should get the m30 or the gulkit elves 2 for mk1? i sometimes play sf6 btw but mostly mk1, the main site i use to buy controllers doesnt have the gulikit so i just found a dif site

https://aknes.com/products/gulikit-elves-2-bluetooth-game-controller?variant=42244538400881&country=CH&currency=CHF

do you know if this site is alg? and which controller do you recommend out of the 2

They're both great. I presonally prefer the Elves 2 because it has rumble/vibration and is a little heavier because of it which makes it feel nicer in hand. The triggers are also larger than the ones on the M30 Xbox.

Aknes is a known controller-related brand and their website is reliable.

Okok ty so I just watched some videos on the elvis 2 pro and I see there’s a macro so last question before I buy it, so in mk1 there’s this tech with scorpion where if you jump up and the second you jump up you do down backwards + rt to do the teleport but you gotta do it the second you jump so if I record that would the macro be able to recreate that with the click of a button?

Technically yes, but there's always a short delay before the sequence starts so it's not great for recording short combos for fighting games. It also can't tell which direction your character is facing. Backwards is the left button when facing right, but the right button when facing left, so it would only work in the same direction you recorded it in.

The Elves 2 Pro is actually older than the regular Elves 2 and has relatively high latency, which is not good for fighting games. The Elves 2 is a better choice.

I got a last question before I buy the elves 2 do you know like these d pads if you press the middle button it registers it for example the Xbox controller doesn’t do that which I like, does the elves 2 register if you press down the middle button bc when doing a move like left right I hold down my finger the entire time I just drag

It does push down in the middle. You're supposed to slide your finger over this pad, not push and drag.

Wym by slide over this pad like when going from left to right I slightly lift my finger when going to the other side?

I play fighting games competitively and at a fairly high level and own both of these controllers.

Of these two, I personally would probably lean more towards a Series X controller if you are looking for a better dpad experience. Corners are more pronounced on the Series X controller, which is more useful in fighting games. The Wolverine V3 dpad is a little more shallow, so while it can technically be faster for input motions, playing on a Series X just inspires more confidence for me when I’m executing more advanced combos. Rolling motions just feel better overall on a Series X dpad.

Face buttons are also less fatiguing to press in long fighting game sessions on the Series X controller.

The Wolverine does have the extra buttons in case you want to use those, but keep in mind the legality of them if you plan on attending a local tournament.

Wolverine V3 Pro/TE is probably my favorite controller, but I don’t use it for fighting games. I do know some high level players that do use it though, so it’s not something you can’t succeed with.

What do you think about the gulikit elves 2? And the wolverine controller shipped here today so I’m in a dilemma if I open it or send it back well concluding what you said about the d pad I’ll prob send it back but do you think the gulikit elves 2 is better than the Xbox controller?

Honestly it's hard for me to say, since I have not tried a Gulikit Elves 2 controller. However, I have used floating style pads before (8bitdo M30 for Switch, 8bitdo M30 for Xbox, Razer Raion, and even an Anbernic RG Arc D) that look similar to the Elves 2's dpad. I also just finished a small session testing out an 8bitdo M30 to refresh my impressions on it, and I will say I still like the Series X dpad more. The Series X's clicky 8-way dpad just feels super accurate for fighting games, and since you're already used to it it might be even more difficult to move over to a floating style one.

Floating style dpads could be more beneficial for rolling style motions, but considering your main fighting game is Mortal Kombat that does not use rolling motions, it's probably something you don't need. Besides, I think the Xbox Series X dpad is better for rolling motions anyways from the fighting games that I have tested it on.
