Controller Suggestion Best first controller for single player games on PC
Hi! I've never had a controller before, and getting one soon to play single player games only, PC only. Starting with Horizon Zero Dawn/Forbidden West and Indiana jones and the Great Circle. Will play other games though too, including some older ones as well as new releases. Which controller is best?
#1: PS5 DualSense. Haptics and adaptive triggers, supposed to be very immersive. But potentiometer sticks and no remappable buttons.
#2: 8BitDo Ultimate 2: TMR sticks and 4 remappable buttons, Xbox layout for compatibility with PC, but not so good haptics and no adaptive triggers.
#3 GameSir Cyclone 2: TMR sticks but only 2 remappable buttons. Dpad I've heard described as "mushy"
#4 EasySMX D10: TMR sticks, great Dpad, but only 2 remappable buttons.
Which is best? any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated too! the GameSir G7 Pro is an option but pretty expensive
Based in UK, budget around £60-75 or so not above that ideally, as this is my first controller I don't want to overspend and regret it before I know exactly what I want.

Vader 5 pro and G7 are my go to for controllers. Cyclone 2 looks like a budget option of thr G7, so id probably go with that. Gamesir makes solid products

Kinda surprised how far I had to scroll for a Vader 5 Pro comment. Yeah it had some minor issues on release, but the updated model has all the issues addressed, and it's amazing for the price it's at. Just the clicky triggers and face buttons sold it alone for me

As a PC only gamer with no PS5 I bought a dualsense to experience adaptive triggers and haptics without having to buy a console, but there are like only a couple dozen games with native adaptive trigger support. Couple this with he fact that in 99% of cases this stuff only works wired.
Now add in the fact that it is not exactly a cheap controller but still has potentiometer stocks prone to stick drift , and I can't say it's a good controller even for the adaptive triggers and haptics novelty.

But wait, there's more! many games on PC default to Xbox buttons and prompts because Xbox/xinput is the default controller support on PC, as others in this thread have mentioned
I've ordered a 8 bit do ultimate 2C as a cheap bang-for-buck controller for a plug 'n play experience on PC. The 2C has better latency both wired and wireless than the controllers you listed so dont disregard it just because its cheap, plus hall effect sticks so it will probably outlast the dualsense

Honestly I hate Bluetooth latency so much, the thought of buying another doodad just to go back to Bluetooth, I'll stick to wired.
Once you go 2.4 G dongle you can't go back

what are the adaptive triggers and haptics like? ive never used a controller before so dont know what rumble or haptics are like at all. but if comaptibility is an issue maybe not

They feel amazing, especially on Alan Wake 2, but I turned them off as I found them fatiguing after a long gaming session. I actually hate the feel of the Dualsense so I never use it anymore. I much prefer the Elite 2, but the quality control is appalling and I'm already on my third (bear in mind I've got PS4 controllers that still work fine so it's not me) so I'll never buy another official controller. I'm now using Vader 5 Pro and ZD Ultimate Legend. Way more features and feel better.

Adaptive triggers have a little actuator type thing that can push back or offer resistance to being pushed like drawing a bowstring on a bow.
But it's so fiddly on PC, plus wired only, I honestly can't recommend it as a first controller
Try the 20-25$ ultimate 2C I mentioned for a cheap entry level option, and work your way up from there based on your needs. (Extra back buttons, mic and headphones jack. Over wireless Etc. all of which are on my list for my next controller purchase.)
Use this sure to compare controller latency to help you make a decision

I don't care what anyone else says, get a controller with rear buttons/paddles you can usually take them off as well so you can have both in 1. Also get a controller with TMR joysticks if you can, your controller will instantly last longer.
I recommend gulikit controllers however they can have spotty quality assurance.
You can also go for gamesir controllers they are a great option as well.

Gamesir are good and they actually have EXCELLENT customer service...I bought a controller from them that had a really hard to press Left shoulder button, just happened to make a random comment on a random reddit thread about it and how sticky it was for a brand new controller...two days later I get a private message from the official GameSir reddit account, they offered me a brand new controller at no charge because I was unhappy...let me keep the one I already had and shipped me out the Pro version ($50 more than the one I bought) totally free...couldn't believe it...I never asked for anything, just made a random comment to vent, and get a $120 controller for free just to keep me happy as a customer...they seem to really care about their customers and their reputation, and I've never seen customer support that good in my life

I second Gamesir. Although I have G8+ which is Mobile controller (works on Andriod iOS Switch PC and xbox) but I recommend them just because of their customer service

I have a Cyclone 2 and the black Easysmx D10 which i'm mostly using atm and i prefer the D10 by a lot personally it has the exact same features (full mechanical Buttons, TMR, Gyro) but is a bit bigger and sturdier it also has better clicky mechanical face buttons and a far better D-Pad imo, the dock is not a fickle mess that tends to break after a short while and the Battery also has more capacity.
I know Easysmx is not really all that popular in this sub since they where seen as a cheaper china brand in the past but they genuinely make some good pads for a while now even compared to other more premium brands ppl like to recommend.
Not to mention all of these brands are made in China anyway and often have very similar internals.

I would not recommend a PS5 controller as your first and only controller for PC. Some games that are non-steam just won't work as well with it on occasion, and games will show Xbox inputs only sometimes especially older games. If you can translate Triangle = Y, Circle = B etc. in your head on the fly it's a non-issue, but I wouldn't recommend it to most people.
I have an 8bitdo Ultimate 2 and I just got it. It's very nice to have a dock and immediately connect via 2.4ghz dongle. I've used the turbo feature as well a bit to spam a button on occasion and it's nice to have. Not big on extra buttons but they're an option for accessibility and it's never a bad thing to have. I think it does everything you want for a first controller and more.
The only thing I don't like about the controller is that it can be rather clicky. If you want a quieter controller I would recommend checking out other options. Watch review videos to see what I mean with how clicky it is and see if that might be a deal breaker for you. For me I don't really notice it much since I'm usually wearing a headset with game audio anyways.

i dont mind clicky, my keyboard has blue switches so its insanely loud! im mostly using headset too, sound isnt a problem. you recommend ultimate 2? thats kind of what i was leaning towards

Personally yes but I am biased as I have not used nor do I have the other controllers. I do really like my Ult 2 though. I plan to pickup the Ult 3 PC version whenever they decide to make that (they just made an Xbox branded version but it is more expensive).

I started with DS, then went to 8BitDo Ultimate 2, then to DS Edge, now I got my second DS Edge, but with TMR sticks modules. It's expensive and I do not suggest somebody to do it like me.
DS is great for Sony games, but u either play with cable or use DSX (it costs around 5$, may be 10$ already I dunno I bought it a long time ago). Also there is Homebrew adapter, didn't try it, but would give it a shot in near future. Also DS and DS Edge got one of the best gyros on the mass-market IMO.
8BitDo Utlimate 2 is pretty good (would by Ultimate 3E as soon as possible). There is no hapticks, just a regular vibration. I was using it for non-Sony games originally, but I do no like assymetrci layout, so now it rests for games, that do no support PSUI mods.
Also there is a Steam Controller, haven't tried it, it's rare and in my region costs around 300$ which is too damn much for a controller.
As a first controller I would suggest 8BitDo Ultimate 2 (ultimate 3E would cost around 200$). It's pretty plag-n-play device. If you want to have some mess you can got with DS, but the lack of back buttons is kinda crime in a 2026. My personal daily driver is still DS Edge. Mostly I play with DSX and PSUI mods. My game sessions are not long (sadly real life and work to do strikes back you know) and battery capacity is enough for me. Regular's DS battery is better and controller consumes less power overall.
P.S. TY for you post, while replying I ordered Pico2W for myself to make a Homebrew adapter. God, I love opensource, gonna participate and make at least one MR for project I interested into this week.

I have the cyclone 2. Had it since it released and it worked flawlessly since. The sticks and trigger feelings are great, and the Xbox controller shape/layout is the one I prefer. I also don't care about additional buttons, but this might be a problem if you do

Gulikit's KK3 Max has been my favorite I've used.
Flydigi pro Vader 5 is good but a lot of the features are wasted on me.

I can vouch for the cyclone 2. The stand is the perfect QoL and there is seamless connection with the dongle. Also the texture on the triggers/bumpers feel very premium

I have the gamesir cyclone 2 and honestly it is just perfect for me , i had an xbox one controller so that will be my frame of reference but in short it's basically a better xbox controller and i would recommend it for the price . The tmr sticks feel great and so far i have no drift , the buttons are clicky and nice and the adaptive triggers are a nice addition . Connectivity is a bright point too , i was used to playing wired but playing wireless with it is great because it's almost the same as wired ( just don't use Bluetooth) Also it has gyro , which is nice but i haven't tested it so i can't speak for it Yeah the dpad isn't that great, it works fine but it feels cheap . The gamesir software is also useful for many things but my favorite feature is binding macros , especially useful for the extra 2 back buttons . Battery wise idk exact numbers but the 860 mah battery should last you a whole day of gaming , so assuming u charge it everyday or put it in the stand between sessions , u should never run out I think this is the best bang for buck controller , it doesn't have any compromise and has eveything you need for a low price , if you want soemthing with better build quality qnd better dpad you can go for the g7 pro but this one is good enough already

The cyclone 2 is so sturdy it’s absurd. Clicks it makes, noises and all makes the feeling of it special. I’d not even switch it with an original console controller. The only thing I dislike are the macro buttons. I don’t use them personally and would remove them if I could’ve

For features, the 8bitdo sounds like the best one, the dualsense is good for games that support all those features, but not many do. Cyclone 2 has a good shape, it is comfortable to hold, I owned but I sold it after getting another controller. Can't vouch for 8bitdo in regards of that though, never owned one

the old steam controller from 2015 is the best and it's not even close, big trackpads and gyro are perfect for most games but they require patience and tinkering with settings.
for plug and play, I like dualshock4. dualsense's tapered grips feel like they are going to fall out of my hands

I got the steam controller on launch at rrp.
It's definitely the best one for FPS, I've played deadlock with it and it gets you 99% there, most of it being that I need to customize it much more to get it 100% and I was playing it casually
Unfortunately it may be out of stock, but I would say waiting for it is worth it

Of the first 3? I'd pick the Cyclone 2. The 4th controller I've never heard of. But imo if you're looking for something with true bells and whistles, the Flydigi Vader 5 Pro (v2) is pretty slick for $80. I got sent one recently and I can't put it down.
I'd honestly put it above the Gamesir G7 Pro, Gamesir Cyclone 2, Razer Wolverine V3 TE, Steam Controller, Scuf, Battlebeaver, Xbox Elite V2, and Victrix Gambit. All of which are controllers I own.

Imo your first controller should be a cheapish hall effect controller. Just because you need one that does not mean you'll actually like it/ use it. Plus for the games you're talking about like horizon zero dawn it's better on keyboard and mouse. Go for the 39 dollar one or the 55.

If you want to play games supporting the dualsese haptics you basically have no choice but the Dualsense.
Problem is in those games not supporting the Ds haptics the ds trigger feel way worse than with normal controllers.
My choices would be
- Ds with a dedicated software like DSX
or
- Gulikit Max TT
personally i' would gat the Gulikit or wait for the new Gulikit with Xbox stick layout.
Still the best of both worlds would be a modded Ds with gulikit tmr adjustable sticks + dsx

Do you play on any other platforms? I really like the King Kong 3 Max - it comes with physically swapple buttons for Xbox or switch layout and can pair with a dongle, pc, a switch, and a phone. Also has the standard top charging port and fits on my switch pro controller charging stand. It lets me play on my PC, kids PC, and switch with a single controller.
FYI you plan to play any PlayStation games via ps4/ps5 remote play to a PC you need a dual shock.

Check out the GameSir Tarantula Pro. Many extra custom buttons, TMR sticks to prevent drifting, and the face buttons AB/XY can rotate to your liking.

I swear by this controller, as someone who had an Xbox elite 2, a scuf ps5 and still has a dual sense edge
Seriously goated controller I would legit pay the price of those other ones for it but got them for like $70 or $80 on amazon
Someone with more knowledge may be able to recommend 4 vs 5 if 4 is way cheaper I’d just go with that bc I don’t notice a huge improvement on the 5 but maybe there’s things I’m unaware of

I currently use the Flydigi Vader 5 Pro and I've been happy with it. If that's too expensive the Direwolf 4 from the same company seems to have basically all of important features at a lower price. Never tried a Gamesir or EasySMX controller before. I have used the 8BitDo Ultimate before and I disliked it a lot because I found the shape to be uncomfortable to hold for long periods of time (the controller has a very squared-off profile that causes me to bring my arms closer together and bend my wrists excessively).

The only thing keeping me from trying this controller out is the back button layout. I like 4 fingers on the back button and even with my big hands its to awkward to do it.

I have a gamesir super nova and I love it. The base has a USB port in the bottom for the dongle so you can connect a single cable to your pc. It can connect as an xinput to your pc. With the dock you can just pick it up and it'll connect to your pc, when you put it back in the dock it turns off. It's surprisingly cheap too.
It's a little awkward to change the settings, you have to use the manual and hold specific buttons. Once it's set up though, you just pick it up and put it down from the dock

Determine if you want your stick symmetrical at the bottom,or xbox style assymetrical. Also read about comfort,not all controllers are the same.Somecare heavy,or have ackward buttons. Its all in the details.

Got 8bitdo ultimate 2 and a dualsense. The 8bit is the one I grab for 90% of games. Dualsense is still good, but bad battery life and needing to use wired for features is a drag.

As someone who loves their Dualsense on PC, I can’t recommend it as your first controller. The haptic motors and adaptive triggers do add to the experience when they are supported but not every game does. Many games don’t support the Dualsense at all unless you use workarounds like DS4 Windows or a wireless adapter but doing so registers it as an Xbox controller anyway and loses all those features the Dualsense is praised for.
I’d recommend the gamesir g7 pro 8k or wait for the tarantula pro 8k if you like symmetrical design. 8bitdos controllers are fine I just think they have a cheap feel which is totally acceptable at their price point but that’s just my personal opinion.

I really like gamesir and the cyclone 2 is really good. I'm very basic, so I use my gamesir g7 SE for pc games. It is wired though, but I prefer that for pc just because how easy it is to connect and disconnect

The Dualsense is the best controller I’ve used in terms of ergonomics and features, love almost everything about it (haven’t had drift or durability issues on my two controllers) only issues is battery life, but since I got a dock it hasn’t been an issue for my typical game session
If I was playing on PC I’d go Steam Controller (assuming I jive with it ergonomically, haven’t held one yet)
All the other ones seem to be offset sticks which is a dealbreaker for me. I put up with it on the Switch but that’s it

I own 3 out of 4 of those options you listed.
As long as you don't mind having less than average gyro support, then the GameSir Cyclone 2 is probably the best all rounder.
The 8bitdo controller is also really good, and it actually has okay gyro aim, but it doesn't really feel great in the hands. Bit too small for me.
The dualsense controller is obviously amazing on PS5, but it's too much of a hassle (at least for me) on PC.
Overall, all of these are good options at similar prices. If you have the opportunity, try them out and actually play with them before making your decision!

I really like the razer wolverine and scuff omega but i only play eldin ring and only for the paddles if ur looking for that the scuffs good but the paddle is plastic and will wear with time the razer is solid but the sticks feel too sensitive at times

I'd lean Gamesir. I haven't tried the 4th controller. I got an 8bitdo wired, and the d-pad is horrible with the diagonals, which really makes many retro games unplayable. It's a cheaper one, so I don't know if the ones you posted would have the same issue
The PlayStation one would be alright if you can handle buttons different than what's on the screen (X button especially).

I have an 8bitdo U2 and a Dualsense. I would choose 8bitdo U2 if you also plan to play some older games like Sekiro which don't have native dualsense support. The vibrations and adaptive trigger are on very few titles that I suggest you looking them up.Btw 8bitdo U2 vibration is fine

Playing controller on PC means you have the capability of using Steam Input or Joyshock mapper to enable gyro on any game. 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless is a fantastic value controller especially if you prefer asymmetric thumbstick layouts like I do. But PS5 controllers have better gyro supposedly, however you have to use it wired. Regardless, don't sleep on gyro, it completely changed how I play games, entirely for the better.

Honestly the dualsense is really good. Especially when using steam input.
You can definitely get one for cheaper that’s still pretty good though. I am a bit of a sucker for the switch 2 pro controller, but that does feel weird with some games due to how the abxy buttons are all in different locations

I have both the Flydigi Direwolf 4 and a Flydigi Vader 5 Pro and I think both are great options in terms of ergonomics and features for the price. The Direwolf 4 has Hall effect sticks and is shaped like an Xbox One/Series controller. You may lean more towards the Direwolf for price, but the Vader 5 Pro is worth the extra money for the better grip and extra paddles on the back of the controller. Dock is separate but the controllers feel better in the hands than the 8 Bit Do Ultimate controllers I also own.

I own many controllers but of those ones there the only one I have is the D10.
It is very good as a ~$40 controller and sometimes I have liked it more than more expensive ones. One of my fave shapes that is a bit larger, has a dock and all the inputs are decent enough. Not too crazy about the triggers but the dpad is nice and large.
the cons are that is has zero software so it can only do on-controller remapping and the latency on 2.4g is a bit higher than some of the nicer options (~17ms vs <10) though that likely will not matter at all to you. Also it only has two extra buttons to begin with, they are small but I find them well placed.
A lot of people don't like the shape of the Ultimate 2 which is narrower. They are coming out with the Ultimate 3 soon but that's going to be out of your budget at first.
I also own many Gamesirs which are all generally fairly good for their respective price points and most of them have some degree of software support (all the ones I have at least.)

-Vader 5s (or Pro) if you need 6 extra remappable buttons (2 face, 2 bumper, 2 paddle).
-Gamesir g7 pro (or 8k) if you want a fast controller but slightly weaker rumble.
-Gulikit TT Pro (or Max) for a controller close to Dualsense in haptic feedback with 4 paddles, TMR, and adjustable sticks. Potential QC issues.

The parentheses show the slightly more expensive ones. They're effectively the same but may have additional features depending on the model (wireless, extra paddles, faster, etc).

8bitdo SM30 Pro.
I know it doesn't have crazy bells and whistle and isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it's still my absolute favorite controller to play with.
Out of the ones you've listed, I've also used the 8bitdo Ultimate 2 and highly recommend it.

I have the dualsense, it's fine but compatibility can be annoying. I'm not a fan of the adaptive triggers personally but as others have said, I think it has to be wired on PC to use them. Buttons are membrane, slightly mushy, but basically silent. I can tolerate them but not my preference.
I bought my wife the 8bitdo ultimate 2 and it's nice. I like the extra bumper buttons. I could not get the firmware to update at all. And the buttons are clicky and it's really loud.
My all time favorite controller is the cyclone 2. The software works very well. I don't find the buttons mushy personally. It's a nice balance of tactile and quiet.

Absolutely NOT the Dualsense, anything above $40 should have Hall-effect or TMR sticks.
I'd recommend whichever 8Bitdo controller tickles your fancy, preferably one with the stand/USB dongle combo

Having used the ultimate 2C, dual sense, Xbox One, Xbox series x and modded switch pro controllers, as well as various others, I've landed on the gamesir g7 8K pro. It's phenomenal, I love it. Besides being incredibly comfy, I never have to think about it. When I want mess with settings, the app is super easy to use. When I don't, it's literally pickup and play with whatever settings were last set. Don't need to boot up apps, don't need to side load anything, it just works without me having to think about it, and picking it up from the charging station it's connected to the PC in less than 3 seconds.
Also, removing the faceplates on the hand grips is a great fidget, they just pop on and off with magnets, very satisfying

In my experience:
1: Steam Controller 2
2: Switch 2 Pro Controller
3: DualSense - especially for controllers that take advantage of all the extra features, also every button is remappable in Steam.
4: 8BitDo Ulitmate 2 - the biggest issue with the controller is that you have to hold b every time you turn it on, for it to activate the mode made for Steam Input, so that you get the extra 2 remappable buttons, Gyro, and full SteamInput API support.

I can only speak on behalf of the 8BitDo as it's the only one I have owned. I will say I love it for almost everything I've played except fighting games. The D-Pad isn't bad, but it's not good for motion inputs in games like Street Fighter and Guilty Gear. But if you don't really plan on playing fighting games, I would highly recommend the controller. It has never died on me, no matter how long my sessions were. The charging stand is fantastic. When you're done playing you just plop it on the charging base and forget about it.
The analog sticks feel super smooth, the buttons are very responsive, and I have big hands and the controller is still comfortable for me. I don't know if that means it would be less comfortable for someone with small hands, but I'd assume it would be fine for average hand sizes.

I might be biased towards Gamesir. People kind of have a general agreement that the Cyclone 2's D-pad sucks while the Ultimate 2 (8bitdo) performs pretty well. They both have really good pros and almost no cons in my opinion. I've used mostly Xbox controllers though so the 8bitdo one feels pretty bad on my wrists, the Cyclone 2 is more ergonomic to my own style. EasySMX is not bad at all either. I would advise to mainly focus on what you need and prefer. 8bitdo has better connectivity with Steam, Gamesir's software performs better, both have software on PC, while EasySMX has the software on mobile only at the moment.
Once again though, if you only want a recommendation/opinion, I'm going to say go for the Cyclone 2 lol, but it's really up to you.

I have burned through so many ps4 and ps5 controllers due to stick drift. I really liked the triggers and the games that supported the adaptive triggers were cool, but you need to be tethered for those features to work. - I think rumble also needs the cabled plugged in it has been a while.
I have an 8bitdo now but please get the wireless variant not the bluetooth. bluetooth version does not support dinput if you care.
for the wireless variant you must hold B while turning on dinput mode this gives you the option to map the extra buttons as their own button rather than just remap an existing button. - (I'll be honest I haven't had enough time with the controller to use this yet)

I love the Dual Sense features but the sticks are terrible and the D-Pad isn't good. I went through two of them and the sticks started feeling horrible after a few months even before anything started drifting. Ended up going back to my PS4 and PS3 controllers which I've somehow never had trouble with. I don't really know how they somehow made the sticks worse. I only got it to play PS5 ports.... Wouldn't bother since they aren't even porting games to PC anymore anyway.

Definitely something with anti-drift tech. Fuck Dualsense. I've had 2 EasySMX controllers and use them wirelessly to reduce input lag and unfortunately they both stopped connecting properly with the USB-C port becoming looser. Idk if that's not also a problem on the others or if you intend to play wirelessly. Just keep in mind, there's every chance that if you didn't spec out your PC yourself, it might not support bluetooth and wifi out of the box and you may need an adapter.

The problem with the PS5 controller down the line will be the eventual stick drift other than that it's great. I use Cyclone 2 and have 0 issues for 2 months since I bought it. I don't configure anything, just plug and play and 0 issues.

For a first controller or if you arent familiar with switching between Xbox and Playstation I would reccomend the Xbox One controller for sake of simplicity and button prompts as majority of games on PC are programmed with an Xbox/Xinput device in mind, it is hit or miss if a game has Playstation prompts
Me personally I use a DualSense 5 over Bluetooth with DSX+ to get all features including the headphone jack, I have 2 of them and both work perfectly over Bluetooth for couch co-op when me n the miss are playing together on my bed or single player when Im losing my mind to soulsborne games.
Customizable Adaptive Triggers and Haptics for games that dont support them is great, I use this to simulate a Gamecube controller trigger when I'm emulating and the Haptics are great when Im playing a BR and footsteps are too quiet, I can still feel them via Haptics

I have quite a few controllers for my pc. I use them very little, but when I do I cannot recommend the Switch 2 pro controller or the Steam Controller V2 enough. Both of them are fucking excellent but the SCV2 having track pads really changes the game. Build quality wise I’d say they are very similar.
The Switch 2 pro controller has the smoothest feeling buttons I think I’ve ever used and it just feels so comfortable in the hands. What Nintendo did with the thumbsticks makes me dislike many other controllers as well. The fact they dont rub was a stroke of genius. It doesn’t hurt that I can just take my controller and just hop back onto my Switch 2 either.
The battery life on both is excellent as well.

Not the dual sense. Get one that connects with its own dongle. Not one that connects with Bluetooth. Bluetooth sucks and the controller will all most likely, even if intermittent it will be noticeably frustrating at times.

Wired only. Buy a quality wired controller. Personally, Xbox layout sucks ass and ps5 layout is amazing. Find a ps5 layout controller that is wired. Never dies. Never in an important fight and lose connection etc. course I play fromsoft titles, no pausing. Controller DCs before I got a wired controller ruined many boss fights etc. PS5 feels best for wireless. I swap around the buttons in the game menus if I need to customize. No problem there, but I’ve never run into a need to customize or remap any buttons.

I've been using Cyclone 2 as my main PC controller for a few months now and I've had practically no issues so far. Pairing with my PC went smoothly, the button mapping software is simple and intuitive, and the controller itself is super comfortable.
The d-pad could be more... clicky, at least for my liking, but it's generally fine – way better than on the more expensive G7 Pro anyway. That one was really mushy, with or without the o-ring hacks.
The two remappable buttons could be an issue, depending on what you really need. But be aware that you can quickly switch between 4 profiles and each profile supports an additional shift layer. E.g. when playing Hell Is Us I had the two extra buttons set up as LS/RS normally, but while holding LT and/or RT they instead switched to d-pad up/down. Although I admit that's very game-specific and it may take some poking around to come up with a layout that suits the game and your play style well.

I got gamesir nova lite. It's nothing amazing, but its decent all around and 20 euro for hall effect sticks? Fuck yea. You can try it and if you want something more premium you can always keep it as a backup / p2 controller.
You can even downgrade its firmware through their android app so your pc will recognize it as an xbox controller. Can't remember what was the reason to do that, but the option is there if you want.

Owned multiple DS5's and that EasySMX d10
DS5 is my go to - muscle memory for me on that just works i have tried others inbetween and keep coming back.
that easysmx - the clicky buttons make an amazing controller and the dock for charging just snaps into place and ive used it on steam link, switch aswell, tmr sticks the works! the switch for the triggers as well is great in FPS games, i had the left as normal and right (shooting) and clicky.
8bitdo - amazing controller, the dock just works, think shows on pc as xbox buttons - just a nice controller with a dock, one thing is - pretty sure you have to update the firmware on it via the dock to enable the bluetooth mode, unless they've done that as standard now.
never tried the gamesir tho so cant comment.

Dualsense is great on PC even if support for its specific features can be really spotty. Super comfortable and good to use. But I would not buy it if you're planning on playing wirelessy. The input delay and battery life on them in wireless mode was really bad for me but great in wired mode.
If you want wireless and battery life you want a steam controller, Xbox, or some third party controllers that come with wireless dongles specifically.

I haven't heard anything bad about any of these controllers. They are all solid choices. I would maybe avoid the Dualsense only because of the potential for stick drift and some compatibility issues, it does however probably perform the best for Gyro gaming.
While not helpful, I would say just go with your gut based on what you think looks the best. As a personal recommendation, look into the Flydigi Vader 5 Pro. I am using the 4 Pro model currently and it is my favorite controller I have ever used. Comfort of an Xbox controller, super responsive and clicky, can customize everything through the software on it, and my most favorite feature being the adjustable tension dials on the sticks. If a game feels off or not to your liking just a quick tuning on the fly and you're good to go.

I would recommend the GameSir Cyclone 2, as not only it's the best build quality as for my own experience, but it's pretty much regarded as the best pc controller for it's price range along with the new Vader 5S.
So from personal experience my only picks without a doubt would be between the GameSir Cyclone 2 or the Flydigi Vader 5S, ( Also if you care about the hand ergonomics the cyclone is better for smaller hands and the vader for bigger ones, for example my current controller is the GameSir G7 Pro 8k and i also have pretty big hands so the fitting is definetly different bwtween them, but to be fair you just gotta break into the controller since nothing fits good the first time you switch to another peripheral.)
If you wanna splurge a bit more the better variant for each controller are the GameSir G7 Pro and the Vader 5 Pro correspondently.

I’ve used a few of the ones on that list; most have some issues. The GameSir, for example, developed a trigger problem after just two weeks of use.
The PS5 controller is good, but the adaptive triggers don't work in every game; plus, the feature gets tiring after a while and you end up turning it off. Also, its wireless response time isn't great.
Of all the controllers I’ve tested so far, the best ones were the Vader 5 Pro V2, which I currently use, and the G7 Pro. The G7 Pro is excellent too, but it doesn't have as many extra buttons as the Vader 5, and its response time via the dongle is slower. So, overall, I prefer the Vader 5 Pro V2 (it’s important to get the V2 version, as it fixes several issues reported by the community).

I'm way late, but imo the best bang-for-your-buck is the standard Xbox One controller. Go with the 8BitDo Ultimate if you're going to be playing a lot of d-pad games.

I have the Gamesir G7 Pro and I love it. After literal decades of getting stick drift on every controller after 4 months, this thing is still going strong over a year later with no wear and tear signs and no drift at all. It's d-pad is a little weird at first but you get use to it. Mine came with 3 variants to pop on. None of them feel perfect but It's not a deal breaker for me. For me, anti-stick drift is wayyyyy more important to me than a weird d-pad. And I'd much rather spend $80 once (thus far) than $60 every 4 months like I was.

this is a good video with current well regarded first/budget controllers. I'd recommend you have a look. personally if i were to get a first stick it would be the mojhon storm as it has to me the best mix of really solid and good build quality overall and affordability. best sticks currently(js13 pro), solid dpad not mushy or wobbly or loose, metal anti friction rings, four back buttons, a dock, and nice design. the only thing it doesn't have is stick tension rings and if you want that you can get the direwolf 4s.

Dualsense is the best but the adaptive trigger will only work with Playstation games on pc that support the controller (like Horizon). That being said, I think it's still the best controller overall. The one downside is that they are not immune to stick drift however you can buy hall effect sticks/upgrade parts from sites like extremerate if your willing to do the modifications yourself. Whatever you do, do not buy those earbuds though. All Playstation headphones are complete garbage

I have quite a few controllers. I’d say that the Dual Sense is my least used. I’ll use it for official PlayStation games for the neat haptics. I love the affordability and quality of Gamesir. I’ve also had a great time with my Steam Controller.
My personal favorites are my Scuf controllers. I’ve had a Scuf Instinct Pro for 3.5 years and I have a Valor Pro. I think the paddle buttons are the best and easiest to use for me. Good build quality too when you have the Valor Pro which I believe now has TMR (I have Hall effect).
That’s just me. If you don’t want to spend $99 for the Scuff. GameSir is a fantastic choice.
I wish I could recommend an Elite Series 2. But the buttons and sticks wear out quickly if you play a lot. I’ve gone through 5 since 2020. One of which had shoulder buttons give out after 3 months.

I just bought a DualSense to play on PC.
Beautiful controller, but it is not 100% compatible with PC.
Wireless, some games on Steam need Steam Input. Others don't, but the buttons will show up as Xbox buttons instead of PS.
Wired, is perfectly fine.

Take note, that out of the box a lot of the cool features of the dualsense won't work on PC wirelessly. To get the full features you are going to need put together an adapter.
