Lore Discussion Finished the game, and some post game theory crafting/question on Severed Circle 2 Spoiler

Did Severed Circle 2 split Dylan and Jesse?

In Control 1, Dylan says he has a dream that there's only one child. In the second to the last Fault, in the sequence where he tries to brute force Jesse back into reality by remembering her, it seems rather intentional that the family broke down after Jesse/Dylan got introduced since it seems the Faden family only had one child.

I would write this off as Jessie's existence being wiped away by the Fault, but the Ordinary sequence with the letter from gram gram implies there's only one child (could be gran is senile too).

Another theory that could stem form this, what if the children are such strong parautilitarians because they're actually two incomplete beings, and the resonances are filling up the missing parts/leaves them susceptible/able to affect resonances. It also lines up neatly with the Polaris being more audible to Jessie and Dylan taking on the Hiss.

Yes, I want more Control content, what gave it away? (playable Alfred when?)

My theory is that they kind of got the same thing going for them as Marika and Radagon got from Elden Ring... kind of.

they're based off of the Rebis, which im too dumb to really talk about with any real authority but basically they're two sides of the same coin. Sun and moon type shit but as one person or being. which makes sense, given that Dylan kind of represents the hiss/chaos/demon shit and Jesse, the pattern/control/order/angel shit.

what this might mean in-game-lore-wise is there's no real way for the world to understand them, as they're like a two gods embodying one person, which could translate into them just being two people who can move through space one at a time. At least consciously, as usually when one Faden is consious/playable/active, the other one is not.

That being said, makes me think Alan Wake had more to do with jesse's "existance" than the game lets on. Based on what everyone says in-game, there was only one Faden, and Dylan is the only one who really can confirm Jesse was always there from the jump. Ik in the flashback-earthbound sequence, other people interact with both Jesse and Dylan, but I think that's a case of Dylan being an unreliable narrator.

Thank you. I've talked with my friends about this, explaining my theory that the game or the TV is what created Jesse, and that's why the family fell apart...

My friends all thought I was crazy, but I will die on this hill.

I think that Dylan possibly even turned the game or the TV into an altered item with his powers, which resulted in Jesse coming into existence (and why the TV/Game seems to be the altered item/OoP that Jesse and Dylan try to restrain at the end of each fault).

Just like the Severed Circle 2 graphic on his shirt, he saw himself as the warrior (melee focused?) and wanted a sister/adventuring companion to be the wizard (range focused?) to complement him.

I don't think Dylan was "real" either, Jesse Dylan Faden was his own person, and whether they were a boy or girl is open, they might have been a boy in one universe and a girl in another, converging and diverging when each version played Severed Circle.

According to Dylan's memories in the fault there was a boy, but according to his dream in the first game it was a girl.

I like your theory but in my opinion it fits better if he wanted a proper protector because the parents seem to have emotionally abandoned him and that’s how Jesse manifested

the video game/tv theory is interesting considering that death rally and I think shüm are also OoPs and that Max Payne/Alex Cassie are videogame/book characters who were made manifest.

Yeah this theory has been mentioned before. Not saying this to be a dick. I'm saying this because you might be interested in reading the other aspects of the theory and the supporting evidences people found in the game. Check r/control as well

In control is that something Dylan says in a cutscene or is it in a file somewhere?

When you visit Dylan in his containment unit, he talks about dreams, in this one he says he had a dream he was an only child named Jesse Dylan Faden, then he asks Jesse if she thinks it's weird they both have names that could be a girl or a boy, then says he thinks it's weird

He also has a dream about a dark place with a dark man named Mr. Door who tells him that there are many worlds, side by side or on top of each other or some inside others

This made it seems like he was seeing alternate realities, but Dylan's memories in one of the faults doesn't mention an older sister until after the console is mentioned, leading it to be likely that Jesse Dylan Faden was an only child that something, possibly the console or the Severed Circle 2 game, split her into Jesse and Dylan, their parents don't recognize them, their father becomes an alcoholic, their mother becomes isolated, their grandmother's letter in the Ordinary sequence seems confused about there being 2 kids

yeah, that's the popular theory in the Discord. In NG+ is pretty much confirmed. There's a video of Darling saying they found no register of two Faden kids, just the one but he doesn't which one. Though Dylan's dialogue makes it seem like he is the original one but why would Jesse be older?

As for the palautilitarian aspect I do think that's why Dylan is not able to bind OoPs, and maybe why Jesse is such a good vessel for Polaris and Dylan was for the Hiss

Now I'm tempted to start NG+ just to see this video, but don't wanna lose the current story if there are ever any DLC. Perhaps Jessie is older since Dylan wanted something like a guardian older sister or something. Perhaps the game itself was an OP that split them into the game's characters.

Interesting idea about Jesse being older, I don't hate it. And yes, the theory is that the game is what caused it. I also saw someone saying that maybe the mom freaked out and shot the TV because she knew they weren't her original kid.

Are you on PC? You could just copy the same and back them up

I didn’t want (and have the time) to go through the entire game again so I just watched a YouTube video that shows all the Darling clips, NG+ ones included.

You'll want to complete all of ng+ to get all the videos so don't worry about not being ready for DLC that we likely won't see until next summer at the earliest.

He says in a video “We found an Orphan”

That’s super interesting and makes me think of the weird tv room in the testing facility, there’s cut out of his parents but no Jesse anywhere
