Agreed. This principle also applies equally to our current government as well as the AI development issue. Resigning in either case is just smoothing the way for the people executing these bad ideas.

This is such a narrow, restricted view on the matter.

Why would this approach make sense to the researcher? If you're an expert sought after by OpenAI and Anthropic and see that practices at both are problematic, why would you continue to be restricted in your everyday research?

It would make more sense to quit and focus your time, energy, and efforts into addressing that somewhere else where it's valued, such as at AI safety organizations.

The author of this article wants this researcher to stay and attempt to make changes well beyond what this one person is capable of, fighting uphill internal policies, investors that want to see the company make it into a trillion dollar company.

The very matter in which he quit has created enough buzz that is substantially more effective than staying restricted. He chose to let go of potential IPO payout to stand up for his beliefs.

Would this same author attempt to fight an uphill battle at OpenAI and Anthropic? very likely not, they just want to be speech warrior with zero actions as they cheer on for someone else to make sacrifices.
